Subject: RE: BS: Iz Startin' to Hate Snow From: Bat Goddess Date: 31 Mar 03 - 10:01 AM For almost 2 weeks we've had temperatures in the 50s and up to the low 60s, massive melting (new seasonal swimming pool in the cellar), snow drops, lots of mud, bare knees on joggers, etcet etcet. Woke up to snow this morning. Not a lot, just about an inch and still spitting. AND it's cold AND it's windy. AND I no longer have a sense of humor about it. Grrrr (weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth), Linn |
Subject: RE: BS: Iz Startin' to Hate Snow From: Naemanson Date: 31 Mar 03 - 09:53 AM My daughters in Pennsylvania and Virginia were each seeing snow when I spoke with them on Sunday. Today is's snowing here in Maine. The timing is perfect. I am supposed to interview for the job on Guam this afternoon. It will be hard to keep things in perspective when they are sitting on a tropical island and I am here watching the snow fly. |
Subject: RE: BS: Iz Startin' to Hate Snow From: gnu Date: 31 Mar 03 - 05:03 AM Yup... saw my first robin a day or so ago and we've wakened to 6mm of ice on the tree branches and snow expected this afternoon. |

Subject: RE: BS: Iz Startin' to Hate Snow From: Bobert Date: 30 Mar 03 - 11:59 AM Well danged! Here we go again. Just yesterday I was out working in gardens wuth just a tee shirt. Yeah, some of the native azaleas were satrting to bloom, the blood root bloomin, crocuses blooming, linten roses, ect... And now its snowin'! Yeap been snowin' all mornin' and they're calling for 6 inches and temps in the mid 20's tonight. We've been out covering as much as we can but, danged, ain't this like insultin'! Have I mentioned anywhere that I detest this stuff. If not, I do... Grrrrrrrrrrr..... Bobert |
Subject: RE: BS: Iz Startin' to Hate Snow From: Naemanson Date: 15 Mar 03 - 05:25 PM "Ramps" rings a bell from somewhere in my past. Where else might that term be applied to wild food? Yeah, Sins, that was sarcasm. With luck and warm weather the snow will be gone by tax day. I've got my fingers crossed. |

Subject: RE: BS: Iz Startin' to Hate Snow From: CarolC Date: 14 Mar 03 - 08:07 PM Oh yeahhhhh... If you ever get over to Mineral County and points west around this time of year, get yourself to one of the local ramp dinners that they have at the town fire halls. Definitely worth the effort. |
Subject: RE: BS: Iz Startin' to Hate Snow From: Bobert Date: 14 Mar 03 - 07:58 PM CarolC: Okay, I found 'em in my North Carolina Wildflower book (William Justice and Ritchie Bell); "Allium Trioccum" or "Noddong Onion. Nope, never saw the plant in my life. But it won't be long before we have "snow drops", and "tooth wart", then the wild flower show begins. I have an area in the woods where it is both shady and moist and I get thousands of "May Apples" and "Jack-in-the-Pulpits". But I also have "Shooting Star", "Twinleaf" (very rare that I found up near Maryland on the banks of the Potomac), "Dutchman's Britches", "Larksspur", "Fairy Wand", "Trillium", "Blood Root", "Spring Beauty", "Black Kohosh", "Larkspur", native "Maiden Hair Ferns".... Oh, I get excited thinking about it... Ahh, I understand that these "ramps" is a tad smelly but 'sposed to be good, according to thre P-Vine, when cooked... Bobert |

Subject: RE: BS: Iz Startin' to Hate Snow From: CarolC Date: 14 Mar 03 - 05:50 PM Well heck Bobert! Ramps is ramps! The only other common name in my Newcombs Wildflower Guide is Wild Leek. It grows on hillsides with rich, moist, humus soil. Maybe it doesn't grow down in the foothills where you are ;-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Iz Startin' to Hate Snow From: Bobert Date: 14 Mar 03 - 05:42 PM Well, danged, CarolC! What are "ramps". Maybe I know them by another name. Bobert |
Subject: RE: BS: Iz Startin' to Hate Snow From: CarolC Date: 14 Mar 03 - 05:33 PM Bobert! The ramps should be coming up right about now where you are. Are you going to be having any ramps this year? (If so, I'm jealous.) |
Subject: RE: BS: Iz Startin' to Hate Snow From: SINSULL Date: 14 Mar 03 - 05:06 PM Was that sarcasm???? The eagles are back. I guess the river is frozen again further north so at least the cold brought something good. |
Subject: RE: BS: Iz Startin' to Hate Snow From: Naemanson Date: 14 Mar 03 - 03:44 PM So, here we are, in mid March, the ugliest time of the winter. The roads are bordered by melting snowbanks in every shade of grey and black. The trash that has lain hidden under a mantle of white now appears and pollutes the landscape. Pools of muddy water form during the day and freeze into treacherous patches of ice after dark. Now is the time when another inch of snow would improve the looks of the area and, sure enough, last night we got just that! We are so fortunate. |

Subject: RE: BS: Iz Startin' to Hate Snow From: gnu Date: 11 Mar 03 - 05:28 AM Well, I've never seen cold like this in March. -18C again this morning and it's forecast to be like that most of the week, with few highs near 0C. I checked with Environment Canada and the normal low and high are -8 and +2. The maple slurpup is going to be running awfully slow, if at all. |
Subject: RE: BS: Iz Startin' to Hate Snow From: Stilly River Sage Date: 10 Mar 03 - 09:44 PM Here in Fort Worth it is more than past time to start puttin in the garden. The cold weather stuff, beans and onions, need to go in. But the weather just hasn't felt like "digging up the garden" weather. It has to be sunny, with a slight breeze, and by the time you put down the spade fork (or turn off the Rototiller) it's in the high 60s or low 70s. I'm dying to get out in the yard, but not the way it has been lately. SRS |
Subject: RE: BS: Iz Startin' to Hate Snow From: Bobert Date: 10 Mar 03 - 09:40 PM Amen, Sinsull. This winter has been unreal. And the almanac is callin' fir the "Biggie" in March. If it happens, as God as my witness, I'll find the person who wrote the danged almanac and plummel him or her with snowballs. I swear it! Bobert |

Subject: RE: BS: Iz Startin' to Hate Snow From: GUEST,The O'Meara Date: 10 Mar 03 - 11:59 AM You people who complain about snow and cold should thank your lucky stars! Think how much worse it would be if it weren't for global warming! Lived in Wyoming for 20 yrs. The snow never melts there, it just blows back and forth across the prarie and wears out sometime in late June. Spent my teen years in Minnesota and spent 20 years in Wyo. It's still a novelty to see snow fall vertically here in Colo. I have discovered the "IT's Never Been.." syndrome. Examples: Went for a drive across Canada, visited Moose Factory Island in James Bay of Hudson's Bay, just to say I'd been there. It was a touch over 100 degrees F. Local folks said "It's never been this hot..." Came back through Maine, it was 104 F. in Presque Isle. "It's never been..." Last fall, went to visit Minn, in Oct, to see the fall colors and experience the warm autumn days of Indian summer. The fall colors were an occasional brown leaf flashing by amid the horizontal snowflakes. No wonder so many people distrust Native Americans. #rd coldest Oct on record, "It's never been..." Went to Fla in Jan. this year to get away from the cold. Folks said "It's never been this cold for this long..." O'Meara |
Subject: RE: BS: Iz Startin' to Hate Snow From: Charley Noble Date: 09 Mar 03 - 10:48 AM Well, I certainly hope Brett appreciates the fine welcome we set up for him on the front steps of our apartment building. We poured several buckets of water down the steps and walkway, forming a miniature glacier. Of course, last night it was in the 30's so it probably melted. Brett did arrive back home, seeing lights on in his apartment when we pulled in from the Press Room shanty swap, but it was really too late to pound on his door. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: BS: Iz Startin' to Hate Snow From: Naemanson Date: 07 Mar 03 - 12:49 PM Ouch, Tom, I know what you are going through. I hope you are doing better soon. I screwed up my leg shortly after I got here and I haven't been comfortable for the last two weeks. It hasn't been all beer and skittles out here in California. Of course, I didn't slip on the ice. I was coming back from my first walk on the beach when I hit an irregulaity in the pavement and rolled my right ankle and twisted my left knee. |
Subject: RE: BS: Iz Startin' to Hate Snow From: curmudgeon Date: 07 Mar 03 - 11:25 AM It snowed again yesterday; not a lot, just enough to cover the ice I slipped on while emptying the cat box. Really bunged up my leg, enough to require a cane. Have to have Linn do the driving as I don't think I can work the clutch on my car. But, supposed to be in the low 40s tomorow. |
Subject: RE: BS: Iz Startin' to Hate Snow From: CarolC Date: 06 Mar 03 - 03:03 PM Oooohhhhh... sand... I'm jealous. We had all of the windows open all night last night, and we had the ceiling fan going in the bedroom. I think that's a first for me this early in March. |
Subject: RE: BS: Iz Startin' to Hate Snow From: Naemanson Date: 06 Mar 03 - 02:35 PM That's OK Amos. My goal is Europe. Though, if that doesn't pan out maybe San Diego would be in the cards. Subject: RE: BS: Iz Startin' to Hate Snow From: bbc Date: 06 Mar 03 - 09:49 AM Boy, more of the stuff! Yesterday, I had a one-hour delay on the way to work because a hill 10 minutes from my school was a sheet of ice. Everyone just pulled over & waited for something to change. Thankfully, the temp had gone up enough in 1 hour that we could go on. This morning, we have a forecast for 2-6 inches dribbled out all through the day. Thankfully, most districts just threw up their hands in dispair & closed. Yay!!! Spring by March 20th--please!!! bbc |
Subject: RE: BS: Iz Startin' to Hate Snow From: Naemanson Date: 05 Mar 03 - 08:59 PM Snow? What's that? There's lots of soft light colored stuff in front of the hotel but it's beach sand. But I have to leave all this behind. Amos, can you find me a job down there in San Diego? |
Subject: RE: BS: Iz Startin' to Hate Snow From: SINSULL Date: 05 Mar 03 - 08:44 PM Snow on Sunday, Brett. Sorry. I slipped twice tonight - once at the office, once at home. Didn't fall but almost. Welcome back. |

Subject: RE: BS: Iz Startin' to Hate Snow From: GUEST,bbc at work Date: 04 Mar 03 - 11:56 AM The only consolation this winter, for me, is that, last winter, I bought an expensive top-of-the-line Honda snowblower w/ treads & then only got one 6-inch snowfall. This winter, it has been useful, to say the least! On my 50th birthday, Spring is s'posed to rejoin us. Looking forward to that, bigtime!!! best, bbc |

Subject: RE: BS: Iz Startin' to Hate Snow From: Bobert Date: 03 Mar 03 - 06:59 PM Well, after another 6 inches over the weekend and yet another shoveling out of paths to the birdfeeders and the driveway, the forcast is for temps around 50F during the day so the 18 or so inches of snow that still remain should shrink this week... Hooray... Maybe I can get to my studion by the weekend and check it out. Ain't seen it in a month... Bobert |
Subject: RE: BS: Iz Startin' to Hate Snow From: Naemanson Date: 03 Mar 03 - 06:52 PM Will you guys hate me when I tell you that I spent Sunday afternoon with Amos? It wasn't all peaches and cream. Subject: RE: BS: Iz Startin' to Hate Snow From: Naemanson Date: 28 Feb 03 - 11:53 AM Still no snow at Port Hueneme but I heard they got another 14" of the stuff back home. |
Subject: RE: BS: Iz Startin' to Hate Snow From: *daylia* Date: 27 Feb 03 - 12:19 PM Well even tho I do like snow, I've had about enough of it now too Steve. The drifts at my back door are about 4 feet high, and the banks on either side of my driveway have become cliffs so high I've no choice but to call the local plow-guy (at $20-30 a crack - only the first one was free *sniff*). But hating snow? Hmmmmmmm ... according to this Canadian Weathernetwork story I heard last week it can be a little counter-productive: Apparently a snow-sick Canuck got extremely frustrated with his City Council's refusal to order the plows to stop dumping their excess snow on his property. So after last week's major snowfall, he loaded the latest mountain they'd "gifted" him with onto a truck and dumped it on the Councillor's front lawn. The Councillor got so upset at the sight of all that snow that he flew into a rage, burst out the front door and started trying to punch the guy's lights out! He now faces several criminal charges (the councillor, not the guy who dumped the snow). At the time the story really tickled my funny-bone, but at this point I'm hoping my sense of humour will last till spring - and that's only 3 weeks away!!! (hopefully) Cheers - daylia |
Subject: RE: BS: Iz Startin' to Hate Snow From: Steve Latimer Date: 25 Feb 03 - 08:30 PM We got tricked last week. It warmed up, things were thawing. Once, again, I too, have had enough. |

It was 52 degrees F this morning when I went for my walk on the beach. And last night the rain came down in buckets! Today I saw snow! It was way off in the distance, on top of some mountains. I am NOT going to visit it. |
Subject: RE: BS: Iz Startin' to Hate Snow From: Alice Date: 24 Feb 03 - 02:11 PM Tony, we had -30 below zero farenheit last night, without the wind. The wind chill was more like -60. I would take more snow if it wouldn't get below zero again. We always have a few days of below zero temperatures in the winter, and you never know what month it could hit, anytime from October to March. Too cold, but it is sunny and sky is deep blue. Wish I could just stay inside where it's warm. It's about -4 now. Alice |
Subject: RE: BS: Iz Startin' to Hate Snow From: Yorkshire Tony Date: 23 Feb 03 - 09:56 PM We'll take all the snow you can spare - I much prefer it to drought and bushfires. The temperature has been pushing up towards 40C, that's over the 100 mark for you yanks. We had a little bit of rain last week, so at least there is a bit of green showing through the blackened landscape around here and the temperature has been cooler - only high 20s (that's 80+ for the yanks). |
