Subject: RE: BS: Your First Posting Here - Do You Recall? From: Bat Goddess Date: 23 Oct 00 - 05:53 PM I got sucked in, I mean "seduced" -- oh, whatever, by Jeri who dragged me into a thread on gravestone iconography. I think I posted as Linn the Thanatolithologist -- it was before "Guest". Dunno why I chose Bat Goddess over Thanatolithologist as a nom de Mudcat, but I did. Glad it all happened, though, and I discovered the joy of mudcatting! Bat Goddess |
Subject: RE: BS: Your First Posting Here - Do You Recall? From: katlaughing Date: 23 Oct 00 - 10:31 AM Late December 1998, asked for lyrics for my dad, which is how I found the Mudcat. I went back to actually read it, but couldn't get it to go back farther than Jan 13, 1999, which I know was not my first. When I started out I was just "katlaughing"; I added the "kat/" after you all started shortening it. Anyway, maybe that is why it wouldn't come up. And, no, it didn't time out on me because I've posted so much. :-) However, when I tried to refresh the threads for two years, it kept timing out. I figured I could find the thread that way. Oh well....it's been a blast. kat |

Patrish, I fixed the first link. You did fine except that you forgot to put in a < at the beginning. |
Subject: RE: BS: Your First Posting Here - Do You Recall? From: GUEST,Patrish Date: 23 Oct 00 - 09:50 AM I lurked for about a year, only pausing to ask for lyrics. In Sept 1999 I succumbed My first posting was on the sad and rather uncomfortable subject of badgers piles just here |
Subject: RE: BS: Your First Posting Here - Do You Recall? From: L R Mole Date: 23 Oct 00 - 09:24 AM Without looking, I think my first was about a knife-edge slide player I recalled from a "Bonanza" of my youth, before I had my own guitar. Hoyt Axton, someone said. What a fine planet this is to land on. |
Subject: RE: BS: Your First Posting Here - Do You Recall? From: GUEST,Roger the skiffler Date: 23 Oct 00 - 09:12 AM I first posted (I've mentioned this elsewhere recently)Feb '98 asking for words to "Listen to the Ocean". It turned out I had them any way, but I started looking at other threads and the rest, as they say, is history! RtS |
Subject: RE: BS: Your First Posting Here - Do You Recall? From: Mooh Date: 23 Oct 00 - 08:55 AM I first posted to Re: Straw Poll on February 28 of this year. After lurking for awhile, and using the database a bit, I took the bait. I think I made some wisecrack about Danny Boy. Someday somebody will do their doctorate thesis on this place, probably for psychiatry. The range of emotion here is incredible and I'm constantly amazed when an otherwise unsuspecting topic becomes sensationalized. Not sure of the first thread I started, maybe one about Tonio K, which got no reply. I didn't realize how much I had posted (over 500)until I got to this thread and looked back. That struck me as alot since I don't read 3/4 of the threads and post to few. Thanks for the chat! Mooh. |
Subject: RE: BS: Your First Posting Here - Do You Recall? From: GutBucketeer Date: 23 Oct 00 - 12:43 AM While I had been lurking for some time. I think the first thread I started was in March 1998. I asked about "Help My singing Voice is Dying" to which Alice promptly replied. I was hooked. Other early requests included sources for Chewing Chawing Gum and Katy Cruel. I may have posted earlier but I can't remember starting a thread before this time. I know It was a long time before I registered. JAB.. Aka Jim in Silver Spring.. Aka Jim Bunch |
Subject: RE: BS: Your First Posting Here - Do You Recall? From: Metchosin Date: 22 Oct 00 - 10:17 PM Thanks Rick and Spaw. As far as being a grand contributor I sincerely have my doubts, I'm way to slow for gay banter, most of it goes over my head and I'm pretty slow on the uptake on a lot of stuff. I used to worry that my brain was wired differently than most.
I still have a hard time getting into the swing of what Liz the Squeak says, unless I talk to myself in an English accent, but I do love her sense of humor. In fact I'm so glad I stuck it out, I really like this place, despite people's penchant for cats. |

Subject: RE: BS: Your First Posting Here - Do You Recall? From: Liz the Squeak Date: 22 Oct 00 - 06:55 PM So what were our first threads? I suspect my first ever thread was the infamous Cat Fart threads, about my little white darling who is in that cat litter tray in the sky now, but if we want to continue the theme, the other one has been snoring quite loudly for nearly an hour now! Subject: RE: BS: Your First Posting Here - Do You Recall? From: Sorcha Date: 22 Oct 00 - 06:42 PM I think I got sent here by Jeeves (about.com) looking for lyrics which I found in the DT. I found the Forum fascinating, and lurked around for about 1 day reading old threads, and promptly joined with a "Hi, I'm New" post. I was promptly welcomed by kat, spaw and others, but by virtue of "doing my homework" I was seen (and maybe still am?) by several as kat kat/laughing's alternate persona. Which we both think is very funny!
Not sure of the total posts, tho I have been accused of being a "compulsive poster"......hee hee. I think my first actual request was about Why Barbara Allen Refused? and it got a lot of response. Still looking for sheet music/gif/abc/MIDI for Green Valley Waltz and Rose of Old Pawnee............ |

Think my first thread was "banned songs", cause a friend of mine told me that the BBC effectively "banned" one of his songs because of it's content (political) and I wanted to know about others. There were lots. Rick, again. |

Subject: RE: BS: Your First Posting Here - Do You Recall? From: WyoWoman Date: 22 Oct 00 - 04:49 PM I found the mudcat from an Internet search for music sites because I was trying to find out where some trad music gatherings were in Scotland and was planning on going on a cycling/music trip there summer before last. The trip to Scotland hasn't transpired yet -- though I have high hopes for the summer of 2001 -- but the Mudcat has been a long, strange trip anyway. 1,902 posts ago ... I started as K.C., but there was another one for a while, so I started using WyoWoman because, well, I'm, like, a woman and I was living in Wyoming. And now that I no longer live in Wyoming, I don't want to have to go through yet another identity crisis. I've had enough of those in 3D world to last a lifetime. So regardless of where I end up living, I'll probably stay WyoWoman as long as I'm living in Mudcat. Which, I reckon, will be a very, very long time. I went away for quite a while, due to a broken heart in my real life and a broken heart at some of the mean crap I was encountering every time I logged on here. It just got to be too much for my aching spirit to bear, and too much time and energy to deal with it. So now I'm back, and back to having to ration my time here so that I don't let it devour the time I need to actually live my life. But when people start being mean with each other, just as in real life, I back out the door and go look for a room where people seem to be having more fun. Life is too short to put up with -- or give out -- nastiness. ww |

Whereas if I do a Forum search for Mrr I should find everything, since I never posted as anything else? Subject: RE: BS: Your First Posting Here - Do You Recall? From: Metchosin Date: 22 Oct 00 - 01:41 PM Vividly, I entered on a thread about Cotton Eyed Joe in the middle of a hornets nest with Gargoyle. Gargoyle was the first to greet me and then Rick Fielding and I was mightily confused. I wanted information regarding two non-PC songs that my grandfather used to do, but was paranoid because of the acrimony and didn't want to get mixed up in it. I remember wishing at the time, why couldn't I have just asked for info on something innocuous like Go and Tell Aunt Brodie or something like that? I remember that too Mrs. Duck, what a hoot!

Subject: RE: BS: Your First Posting Here - Do You Recall? From: GUEST,marty D Date: 22 Oct 00 - 11:59 AM I've posted as a guest on a number of topics for more than a year, but mostly I just enjoyed reading everyone's opinions. I sure remember my first really personal entry though. I'd decided that after 25 years of playing guitar it was time to start improving or take up the tuba. I was amazed at how supportive several mudcatters were. Not just a couple of lines, but great lengthy paragraphs about how to be a better player. Everytime someone said "just be yourself", or "you'll never play like your heroes", someone else said "go for it". My work keeps me away from mudcat much of the time, but I've corresponded with a couple of the members on a regular basis, and guess what? My playing's much better now than it was even two months ago. I even have a new guitar and know why Doc Watson holds Merle Travis in such high esteem. Posting my question was a good move. marty D |
Subject: RE: BS: Your First Posting Here - Do You Recall? From: Wavestar Date: 22 Oct 00 - 08:30 AM My first post, as a guest, was on the 12th of February last year, asking for English lyrics to a Gaelic emigrant song titled 'Sfhada Leam An Oidche Ghemhraidh. I received information almost instantly, from George Seto, but unfortunately I guess he never got around to translating all six verses, as he intended to. Or maybe he just didn't post them (I checked what I think is his website as well.) I posted about five days later as a member, requesting lyrics for "You're not Irish!" and I believe I got an answer. -J |
Subject: RE: BS: Your First Posting Here - Do You Recall? From: Catrin Date: 22 Oct 00 - 07:11 AM I was looking for the lyrics to a boys of the Lough Song (for a friend)in June. Cheers, Catrin (post no. 535) |

Subject: RE: BS: Your First Posting Here - Do You Recall? From: Susan from California Date: 22 Oct 00 - 01:05 AM I absolutely remember! Iwas trying to find out the words to the Mama's & Papa's song "California Dreaming" because there seemed to be a discrepancy--was it "Well I got down on my knees, and I pretend to pray" (which is how I remembered it) and "Well I got down on my knees and I began to pray" which seemed to be the prevailing thought among the people I asked. I felt as if I was berated for being lazy, (even though I had done searches and had gone to a music store looking for sheet music before I posted on the 'cat) and dumb for not knowing what was or wasn't folk :-) I hung around anyway, although my name changed at some point from Susan OF California to Susan FROM California when I had cookie trouble. |

Subject: RE: BS: Your First Posting Here - Do You Recall? From: Thyme2dream Date: 22 Oct 00 - 12:06 AM I sort of had an identity crisis between my first post and now.. I decided to come back as Thyme2dream, a handle I use online a lot and something I wish I had more of. I've been far too serious since i came back tho, and think I'd be better off playing on some of these fun and whimsical threads...maybe I should look harder for my old password... |
Subject: RE: BS: Your First Posting Here - Do You Recall? From: CarolC Date: 21 Oct 00 - 11:40 PM I think this is an interesting story. My sister was the one who introduced me to the Mudcat. She knows MMario through involvement with Rennaissance Faires. When she was looking in the forum to show me how to use it she said, "Oh, MMario is in here". My first post, under her guidance, was an inquiry posted to a circus music thread. I posted it on July 21, 2000, under my old e-mail address. Guess what MMario? You were the one who first answered my query! Full circle. Carol |
Subject: RE: BS: Your First Posting Here - Do You Recall? From: Little Hawk Date: 21 Oct 00 - 10:14 PM I posted a few times as a guest, and promptly got labelled "a troll" by a member. I was so inexperienced at Forums or chat groups or whatever that I didn't even know what that word meant, aside from a creature out of Norwegian folk tales...I was soon accepted as a genuine folkie, however. I joined up under "Little Hawk" later that day. There were a whole lot of dumb threads at the time, like "Why are most mudcatters white?" and "Why aren't most Mudcatters musicians?", and so on. In reaction to those, I launched a satirical thread of my own called "Why are most Mudcatters human?". It aroused critical and angry responses from some people, who missed the irony completely, while others got into the spirit of it, and made some pretty hilarious comments. Lepus Rex, for example, (his name means Jack Rabbit), protested, saying "How dare you assume that I am human?" It turned into a pretty neat thread after awhile. So...my first official posting as Little Hawk was to that same thread, and I will paste it below.... As long as we're trying to find out why most mudcatters are white and heterosexual, this is obviously a question worth asking, don't you think? I mean, it's really quite surprising that we don't have a solid contingent of felines, considering we are mudCATTERS, after all. Then too, my dog howls every time I play the harmonica. Why isn't he a mudcatter? Maybe if we changed the name to the "Muddog Cafe"... We don't have any Martians either. By golly, I think it's time we got to the bottom of this. Without delay. |

Subject: RE: BS: Your First Posting Here - Do You Recall? From: Helen Date: 21 Oct 00 - 08:07 PM I looked it up, to check if my memory was correct. I had discovered the DT a while before & had used it to look up a few songs, but a friend needed to know the name of a song and only had one verse of the lyrics. In May 1997, after a long and fruitless search on the net I submitted my request here and was answered within half an hour by Frank Phillips. The song was called The Dutchman, by Michael Smith. That was 25,000 threads ago. http://www.mudcat.org/thread.CFM?threadID=1670 So, you can all blame Frank Phillips for being so darn helpful, informed & prompt for making me want to keep coming back for more.
