Thankyou too, Sal !! The best lemonade I ever tasted, and can't wait for more ! Although I'd sooner have a tot of "bubbly"----it is 40 years next month since the Royal Navy rum ration was stopped (July 1970) and I STILL get twitchy every day around lunchtime !!

Kitty,
I did a little bit of videoing (via my camera) of Hanging Johnny as well, and there are more photos than I put in the Chippenham album. I'd be happy to pass them all on to someone!

A highlight for me too was the Sunday Folk Club - a real joy to be part of it, and to hear such beautiful choruses to enhance even more the quality of performance which was sustained throughout the evening.

Big thank you to Sylvia Watts for hosting the Club so splendidly!

The Folk Club on Sunday night was particularly good: a very high standard from all the floor singers, an excellent MC - Sylvia Watts - and fine guest spots from The Claque and Lynne Heraud and Pat Turner. High spots were a very rare ballad from Sean O'Shea and Lynne & Pat's Hoover Dustette song, both of which brought tears to the eyes for different reasons.

The sound system in the Olympiad concerts was the best I've heard there yet; concerts in The Cause benefit from some of the best acoustics in the country.

Baz - you weren't at the Boka Halat dance. I had to point-out that I couldn't hear the caller clearly. Too loud and indistinct. He changed it and I accepted it, but it led to some marginal moments.

The problem is that with Roger Watson's style of rolling call, if you don't get to hear the move you can't ask him to stop and explain. He carries on and if it was indistinct the first time the chances are......

Rolling calls mean that the caller doesn't do a walkthrough as such, he starts calling and the music starts and the whole shebang keeps rolling.
Fine for experienced ceilidhnauts but still requires a good sound from the caller.

Pete Coe did a particularly fine job running the English tunes session in the Rose & Crown barn on Monday. When you've got about 60 people in a two-hour session and a set takes about four minutes it's obvious that not everyone is going to get a turn leading. Pete made sure that the more diffident got a chance and that the same people didn't keep jumping in and mowing them down.

Naomi, you can pay the steward on the door of the R&C Barn for the practice sessions on Saturday, Sunday and Monday; I think the main tunes sessions from noon - 2.00 pm are free with a collection, but I couldn't swear to it.

Lynne & Pat, your new CD is great fun and superb quality. I hope to catch up with you there.

The Brian Peters/Claque/Roger Watson song event at noon on Monday exerts a strong enough attraction to drag me out of the main tunes session, something which could normally only be done with powerful industrial machinery.

Replying a bit more fully to Mo above - thanks to Bryan (TheSnail) Creer, the tunes Spare Parts will be doing at the English tunes practice sessions are now on the band website
here. These are one-hour sessions from 11.00 - noon preceding the main English tunes sessions in the Rose & Crown Barn. We'll bring the dots and play the tunes lots of times slowly to help get them into the memory. They are all current session favourites.

The tunes are
Saturday:
News of the Victory, Radstock Jig, Mr. Rew's Waltz, Lancashire Hornpipe
Sunday:
Quare Fellow shot-ese, Four Seasons, Rusty Gully, Harry Gidley's Waltz
Monday:
Fiery Clockface, Bodmin Riding, Dusty Miller, Whinham's Reel

(The Quare Fellow shot-ese comes from the smashing Australian fiddler Charlie Bachelor.)

Good one skipy.

However, we can beat you - The first Lacock Festival was our first full folk festival ever. We missed years two and three (which were just folk days really) and have been to every one since! I think Dick Stanger is one of the few that can beat that record but is there any one else?

Considering the cold, wet weather of that first Lacock and it was the first time Enid had ever camped makes the achievement even more remarkable!

Here's to this year's. As the hot weather approaches for this weekend (22nd) has it peaked too soon or will it stay hot and sunny for the duration?

See you all next week.

A bientot

Julian

Mo, we'll be putting the tunes for the English practice sessions on the Spare Parts website soon, so you'll be able to get hold of those anyway. We're discussing them this afternoon. I'm holding out for the Lancashire Hotpot/Rusty Gusset/Dusty Miller set and also the Radstock Jig and Bodmin Riding, but there will need to be proper negotiations and a full and frank exchange of views before we reach a consensus.

Please, please, please will someone move Chippenham 200 miles further north.

I hate to miss such a marvellous festival, but this year we are being sensible and going to Chester, which happens in Kelsall walking distance from us (can be heard from our garden if the wind is right). They've got some good stuff on too.

Have fun all of you, working out how to fit 30 days-worth of goodies into a weekend.
