Not wishing to commence Round 317 of the What Is Folk debate, Sandra, but when I go to the National I do see mainly folk on the bill - at any rate, at any given time there's at least one (and often two or six) acts on stage who would not be out of place at, say, The Loaded Dog.

Yes, they may be attracting young day-trippers by putting young acts on stage, but it seems to me they still have room for Dave de Hugard and such, so what's the problem?

And once upon a time, Dave was a new, young act....

lots of day trippers = more "popular" acts to entertain them & therefore less traditional folk festival fare.

Maybe it's just us old fogies grumbling, but there are many other venues/festivals for different types of music & when I go to a Folk Festival I expect to see mainly folk on the bill. Then I can decide not to go & see some/many of these acts!

Besides these newer (younger) acts are more impressive on TV & in the papers than a bunch of grey haired old folkies & therefore will attract younger day-trippers.

I agree Gerry, I wish more locals would buy tickets for the UK festivals, rather than variously hog the fringe events and/or moan about the influx of "tourists". Local support is what every festival wants, the NFF's role as the "national" festival notwithstanding. But equal cross-continent participation will always be hard to achieve; indeed, I think the NFF has got that part right by giving a different state prominence, attention and lower entry fees each year.

JennieG, not clear to me why it's a problem (that a lot of locals go & buy day tickets).

The National has become much bigger than it used to be - remember when we could camp in what is now almost the middle of the festival? I know folk who feel it has become a de-facto Canberra folk festival. From working in the office over several years, I have gleaned the information that more money is made from the locals buying day tickets than those who buy season tickets and set up camp for the duration.

But I don't know the solution to that, if there is one.

Bummer about the car Jenny!

Cheers

I'm very late posting to this thread. The events surrounding my return from Canberra put a bit of a damper on things I suppose, although the actual festival was fabulous - one of the best!

I had trouble with my car overheating going down there, and when I set out to come back, it immediately got hot even tho I had just filled the radiator. So I got as far as the Shell garage just outside the grounds before I decided not to risk driving it further and rang the NRMA. Basically it was not fit to drive anywhere. It was either the head gasket or a cracked head on the motor, so I had to get it towed. I opted for the initially more expensive option of having it towed back to Sydney within the next few days so I could get it to my regular garage - who will let me pay off what I owe them as I can afford it. I knew it was going to be an expensive repair, probably more than I could have afforded if I had had it done in Canberra, It turned out to be a cracked head, which was the worst case scenario. Then followed a few more nailbiting days while the repair was being done. I only finally got the car back two days ago, but it was worth the wait. It's running beautifully now.

Despite all that, it was such a great festival that I still feel that it was worth it. I'm just going to be poor for a while.

One of the highlights for me was the Morris dancing in all its forms- particularly the Maypole, the Massed Morris and of course the belly-off. And camping with Black Joak Morris is always special.

Like Sandra, I didn't seem to make it to many concerts - probably even fewer than the number she went to, but some that I did get to and loved were George Papavgeris, Cloudstreet, Bob Fox and Vin Garbutt, Mal Webb, the Wheeze and Suck Band and Eddi Reader. One of my "champagne moments" was sitting in the Fitzroy eating yummy kofta balls and listening to Eddi Reader singing "My love is like a red red rose".

There was a Chorus Cup between the folk clubs for the first time at this festival, and that was a lot of fun - especially bribing the judges! There was also a tribute concert for John (jack halyard) where different performers sang his songs. It finished with a rousing mass performance of "Bring out the Banners".

I missed most of the Grease Competition, but just happened along at the right time as Mal Webb was singing "Tears on my pillow". He ended up winning the competition and it's on YouTube - Mal Webb does Grease.

Actually, the best moments of all came not so much from the concerts but from catching up with old friends, some of whom I hadn't seen since the last festival, or even longer ago, the singing sessions - both upstairs and in the stairwell, interesting moments in and out of the session bar, such as the couple doing a seductive dance one night, the large plaster figure of a sailor that seemed to have lost its face, while some wags were pretending to give it a drink, the large human sized seagull that was trying to steal people's lunch one day, seeing Billy dressed up as a fairy (again), and having dinner in Spaghetti Junction one night with George and Vanessa.

I made a point of catching the parade on the last day and the final concert, because I've missed those things the last couple of years. The concert finished on a high with Danny Spooner singing "When we go rolling home".

Well I didn't roll home quite the way I would have expected, but it's the good memories that will stick in my mind until I do it all again next year. I've heard a lot of people say that they think the National has become too big. It certainly has grown, but I still like it the way it is. I find it quite manageable - I just pick the things I want to do - and then run into somebody and end up doing something totally different. It's always been like that, and I love it. I think the secret is to just go with the flow.

So less than three weeks now and it's off to another festival - St Albans, my other favourite festival. Totally different - much smaller, but with its own charm. Roll on Anzac weekend!

Arrived Wed lunchtime, visited ex-colleagues (wage slaves I call 'em!) came back via the new suburbs - bleeeeh - wall to wall McMansions & the ugliest of 'em all then was safely ensconced in EPIC (Exhibition Park in canberra) till Tuesday,

the highlight of the festival for me was a showing of the recently restored silent movie The Sentimental Bloke (1919) It took almost 2 hours & the time flew. It was magic. It's being released on DVD sometime soon.

Be a Bum for a day - workshop with the Shiny Bums - wot fun, we learnt the tai chi routine (what else can you do when stuck in a lift waiting the repairman?), the Shiny Bum salute as seen on the cover of their CD & other useful things.

Bob Fox & the (new) Radio Ballads - Listen again to the 2006 Radio Ballads

lots of Morris with Black Joak Morris & friends - Black Joak at Illawarra festival highlight was Morris vs. Belly dancers - pics will follow (just wait till you see Ken in his belly dancing gear)

The House Howlers - choir of Press Gallery & parliamentary staffers singing satirical stuff. Shortis & Simpson who do satirical cabaret. The show I missed was 'Smart Arses, Bums and Short Arses', the Bums with these 2 acts - it would have been wonderful.

Looking thru the program I see how few programmed events I attended - 8 on Friday, 10 on Saturday, 7 on Sunday, 5 on Monday.

But I had a great festival.

2008 National Folk Festival Chorus Cup photo here!

I missed that Shiny Bum performance - I was heading there & met friends heading back as the doors were locked! Silly me, expecting to get in 5 minutes before curtain up!

I also packed up in the rain, but as I was packing up contents of a hire caravan, it was easier that the job done by the folks next door who packed up one of those gi-normous 5/6 people tents-with-same-size-front-area.

Fortunately the rain had stopped well before Berrima so we were able to explore a bit, tho the Antiques barn was closed (shut on Tuesdays, what is the world coming to??) fortunately the patchwork shop was open & I bought some fabric. I usually buy off-cuts of Japanese kimono fabrics & occasional fat quarters (small bits for those not in the know) but this time I bought a whole metre of an exquisite Japanese fabric - dunno what I'll do with it, but ... Or where I'll store it as my Japanese fabrics live in 2 shoe boxes, but ...

I really didn't get mt value this festival - if value = going to lotsa' concerts & seeing lotsa' acts - but like Rowan I had a great time, a lot of it spent in Dennis O'Keefe's Australian singalong each lunch time (2-3 hour lunch!) Dave de Hugard was usually at this session. I had hoped to get Dave & Dennis to the Dog this year, but Dennis is going overseas so I've booked Dave on his own.

My other passion is the late night singing sessions - 10-2 each night in the singing room, then downstairs to the session bar to take over the stairwell - there are wonderful acoustics in a concrete stairwell! Wed night we were so few that we even had 3 chairs in the stairwell, tho later nights were the usual packed space when no-one would move in & out, & you never knew who was there. Lots of shanties & other chorus songs with lots of powerful voices in a superb acoustic space.

Monday night I was doing my usual nobody loves me/everybody hates me/nuffin' to listen to/no one to I know anywhere in the whole festival/everyone's gone home/end of festival blaahs when I met Canberra Chris & we had a great time chatting them I headed off to the singing session & finished the festival in the usual high.

Monday night I also had my first (real) disappointment of the festival - I was eagerly awaiting a performance & the sound was so bad I left after 2 songs. It was a real bummer as I so wanted to hear the harmonies of these singers famous for their harmonies - bummer. I used to have a tape but I think it went in the big clean up a few years ago as it was only a copy.

But I have 4 new CDs - including Cloudstreet's latest & 2 from Vin Garbutt - so I have good stuff to listen to.

I'd been up since 6am so I'd had enough coffee to pretend "fresh and alert!" Even so I needed Roger's medicinal liquid to clear the pipes to do I will guide thee any justice.

I saw (and heard) George in the Troubador but had to leave his performance early and do my stint in the Comms office. Peggy Seeger and Martin Pearson (who sends his regards to the Mudcatting poms who looked after him in the UK a couple of years ago) drew the expected crowds but it was the Shiny Bums who first needed the stewards to manage the crowds. Dave de Hugard was his usual lovely self, playing some great music; we had a good time in the sessions. Another group worth mentioning is Celtaclysmic; I don't think any of them are yet old enough to drive a car but they certainly can drive their music. The Wheeze and Suck Bamd kindly allowed their performance for the English Dances to be augmented by a resuscitation of the Old Empire Band; the OEB mustered 43 on stage at its last outing more than a decade ago so, with only 15 or so, it was only a partial resuscitation; but a very lively dance band for all that.

But it is the sessions that make the National for me. Apart from the usual Oz, Scots, Irish, English and eastern US music there were Scandinavian, Romanian, Balkan, Spanish, Sicilian, Andean and African sessions scattered through and around the Session Bar; a right royal feast for the ears and the soul.

The weather was perfect until late on the Monday night, when it drizzled a bit, but it came bucketing down (after I'd finished packing the car) and kept up a steady rain all the way to Coolah. I had three passengers; daughter #1 (who volunteered in the Ticket Office), her classmate (starting to get into Irish fiddle), and a Japanese exchange student who is also a classmate. The last-mentioned became a 'top-up' volunteer and did her 16 hours in the Instrument Lockup; she had a ball and I don't think she'd ever experienced anything even remotely like an Oz National Folk Festival in Japan. A convert, perhaps?

Cheers, Rowan

Now I am home (a much shorter journey than George had to get home but it rained all the way back to Sydney) and have cogitated on the festival I can say I thoroughly enjoyed it. Only got to see George perform once, bummer; but for every great concert/dance/workshop we attend there is another one or two or three we are missing. Never mind, can't be everywhere at once!

As Rowan said above, Sunday morning's hymn singing session was very rousing. Nothing like a room full of people in full voice singing "Onward Christian Soldiers", "Battle Hymn of the Republic", "Cwm Rhondda", etc. to get the blood stirring. The 10am start was a bit of a shock to the system but once we were underway all was well.

Only 12 months to the next NFF.......

Cheers
JennieG

Just landed back in the UK. The NFF proved once more to be the greatest festival there is (OK, I haven't been to Woodford yet, but the weathwer at the NFF has to be better!). Many highlights this year, but Genticorum and Faerd will be among them. The Bob Fox/Vin Garbutt double at the Troubadour also. And the tribute to John Warner was something special. And of course singing with Cloudstreet. And doing "Johnny don't go walking" with Enda Kenny and his band. Missed Eddie Reader, heard she was great.

Rozellas did get sung twice, sorry you missed it Jenny. And Rebetiko "caught" some very interesting troubled souls out there. Tsamiko and Miracle of Life also proved a success. My favourite concert was the Saturday one at the Fitzroy, the sound was amazing and made it very enjoyable indeed. Though the Thursday and Friday night ones at the Troubadour were pretty good too, now I think of it.

Hell, it was a great NFF. On Saturdsy I hear that they were within 46 tickets of having to close the doors because they reached full capacity! The true stars as always were the 1,400 culounteers (we even found one that had come from Cumbria, booking his volunteer place on the internet, for chrissake!).

Roll on 2010 for me...

I was there, and I missed out on a lot.

I completely missed Cloudstreet, Dave de Hugard, Genticorum, George Papavgeris (except for his stint as a judge at the Chorus Cup), Judy Small, Mal Webb, Martin Pearson, Peggy Seeger, the Spooky Men, Vin Garbutt, and the Wheeze and Suck Band. I caught only a couple of songs of Bob Fox, Danny Spooner, Enda Kenny, and Rory McLeod.

Partly this was because there was often so much on at any one time that you had to make choices and skip someone you had seen recently or were expecting to see soon for someone you might never see again. Partly it was because I was on stage three times on Saturday, which is three times more than I have been on stage in the 15 previous Nationals I've attended, so I was a bit too much concerned with what I was going to do to pay much attention to what everyone else was doing.

A few things I did manage to see & enjoy:

Strike Me Pink! was a very silly name for a concert of three bands, each featuring a cimbalom (hammered dulcimer). Tim Meyen has been playing Hungarian cimbalom for one group or another for many years now, but at this concert he was front and center and astonishing. Then Lucy Voronov played Belorussian cimbalom in a completely different but equally astonishing style, and then Jackie Luke played hammered dulcimer for the band, Fourth Realm.

The Ballpoint Penguins dress in tuxedo and sing very funny songs, mostly of their own devising. Even when they do a "cover," such as Flanders & Swann's Glorious Mud, they add enough to make it their own. I had never heard of them before, nor of The Last Five Coins, who play in various European styles, sometimes several in one piece, as in "Solomon O'Flaherty visits the Parthenon."

Maybe the things I enjoyed the most were getting to eat all the chametz (the festival is usually held during Passover, so I can't have the poffertjes & pita & doughnuts, etc, but this year Easter & Passover are a month apart), and seeing my daughter's klezmer band, Di Khupe Heybners, give some terrific performances at blackboard spots and at the Infinite Grease competition.

We left for Sydney about 2:30pm Monday and drove into the fiercest rainstorm I've ever seen - you could barely see the car in front of you for all the rain sheeting down, and then it started hailing - I'm amazed there were no accidents on the way (we did pass a rather bad one on the southbound lanes).

Any other stories?

Charley, rosellas aren't yet endangered; there are tourist traps where you can get eleventy million of them sitting on you wanting a feed.

Youse buggers are missing out on a great festival. We did the hymn singing proud, even though the atheists outnumbered the believers.

We're almost at the end tonight. And then a 10 hour drive tomorrow.

Greetings from the festival. We have a free internet cafe here - pretty cool eh?

I haven't heard George do his Rosella song yet. I'm having dinner with him and Vanessa tonight at Spaghetti Junction, so maybe I'll ask him to.

We have the Stock Camp here and plenty of very good authentic billy tea and damper, so a little Rosella jam would go down very nicely - as long as we manage to get all the feathers out first ;-)

Sandra, you left out Cloudstreet. They'll be there!

Well I will be camping with Black Joak Morris again in the same place as last year - on the opposite side of the oval from the session bar - not far past the Mallee. Freda and I will get there Thursday afternoon or evening, but our tents are probably already up as of today - thanks to Duncan.

Should be a lot of fun and games. There is to be a reprise of the 'belly-off' - the competition between the Morris men and the belly dancers, only this time it has a storyline with a script. I've seen parts of it.

Ken, who always manages to come up with amazing songs for chorus cups has been working on it with John, and tomorrow there will be more plotting for my folk club's entry in the Chorus Cup at the National. Those of us who are involved in that will also have to meet up there at various times in the first couple of days to add our input to the work in progress.

In previous years some Mudcatters have tried to meet up in the session bar on Thursday night, and there has been a loose sort of arrangement that those of us who are free around 1pm will meet in the session bar - I try to get some lunch and take it in there around that time. We could do that again this year.

Bugsy, sorry to hear that you and Mrs Bugsy can't make it this time. I really enjoyed your company last year. And who will sing the Fishfinger Song?

Only 5 more sleeps for me....

I'll be there again this year

...from One-who-doesn't-visit-Mudcat-often.

Heading in from the West to go to the Folklore Conference, the National and from what I hear so far, The Chorus Cup on Saturday to cheer on all the Mudcat folks. See you all there....

I'll bring my ID tag from last year

Blessings

NFJ

Don't miss a chance to see Genticorum

The Rosella Jam song... well I noticed that George and I have similar interests - I fell down a hole a few weeks ago and injured MY left knee too.... :-) Don't tell me that I made a mistake? well get him some jam anyway.... he IS a jammy bugger... :-P

BTW, I noticed that he started off his concert here with his 'Dylan Style' song.... :-P

Next year is only a plan at this stage... I need to work out about where to stay, and costs, etc.. maybe for 2...

I intend to, Sandra!

Found out last week that a new exhibition of landscape painting will start at the National Gallery this weekend, 'Turner to Monet'. I shall make time to go along to that, it interests me greatly.

Cheers
