Subject: RE: Bedworth (UK) Folk Festival 2008 From: OldFolkie Date: 04 Dec 08 - 09:13 AM Unfortunately, due to an illness in the family, we only managed to make it on the Saturday afternoon / evening, but had a great time, and the Mudgather was a superb singaround. Thanks to all who put in so much hard work to make it all happen. OF |

Subject: RE: Bedworth (UK) Folk Festival 2008 From: Snuffy Date: 02 Dec 08 - 08:20 AM Some tremendous singing all round, especially the Voices concert and the follow-on at the Rugby Club. And great to meet up with so many Catters. Barrie and Ingrid are not exactly strangers to the area, having appeared at Bridgnorth, Upton, Alcester (several times) and Warwick(?) not that long ago. But it's always a treat to see them back again. And it's also about time we had the Wilsons back too - they were awesome at Bromyard. |
Subject: RE: Bedworth (UK) Folk Festival 2008 From: Splott Man Date: 02 Dec 08 - 04:00 AM We're sorry we didn't make the Mudgather, Hils, pressure of elsewheres and all that. Great to see you all again. My highlights (when we got a chance to sit down for half an hour) were Barry & Ingrid, Parker & Watts, Papa George, Keith Donnelly (what a grafter!), the Voices concert, and later in the Rugby Club, the combined voices of Barry & Ingrid, GU4, Penny Royal and John Morris singing The Good Old Way - stunning! Thanks for the kind comments George, the fiver is in the post. See you all in the New Year. If any of you are in south Wales on Dec 21 or New Year's Eve, our Mari Lwyd is out and about around Llantrisant. Details here Splott Man |

Subject: RE: Bedworth (UK) Folk Festival 2008 From: Herga Kitty Date: 02 Dec 08 - 02:38 AM Thanks Hils for pointing out that it was Richard who actually coughed up the sick squid for the raffle prize, and Derek Droscher who offered it house room. (I did remember, but only after I'd posted!) George - I "discovered" Barrie and Ingrid many years ago, but hadn't heard them for ages, and it was a great treat to hear them again - and to see the impact they made on horologist Derek, especially in the Voices concert. Looking forward to next year! Kitty |
Subject: RE: Bedworth (UK) Folk Festival 2008 From: Acorn4 Date: 01 Dec 08 - 05:23 PM I've got some photos of the singaround if anyone wants them - if you PM me I'll email them - I'm just about the world's worst photographer, so it's a case of "the good, the bad and the ugly! We were sorry not to be able to join you this weekend but the work on Andy's house has to continue. But the fact that our van doesn't have a second gear that works is also a bit of a bugger! Fingers crossed for next year. I would also like to thank Dave the Hat for my pressie and I am so grateful that he remembered me from back in April, I am very touched, and hopefully I can thank him personally next year. Wishing everyone a very happy. Andy and Jillie xx |
Subject: RE: Bedworth (UK) Folk Festival 2008 From: My guru always said Date: 01 Dec 08 - 04:01 PM What a wonderful weekend despite the freezing cold, full of friendship, singing and laughter! Huge thanks to Malc, Gill and all the fabulous team for organising this year after year and giving us all so much fun! Thanks too for giving me the chance to sing more songs over the weekend, I really enjoyed the experience and am already looking forward to next year too (what Singing Ref said) *grin* More thanks are due to all who made it along to the MudGather, sharing songs & stories, chocolate, hugs and smiles. Also for bringing prizes and buying raffle tickets with good grace, we raised £59 for the MudCat & I'll be transferring it to the FoM account in the next few days. Special thanks are due to Derek Burgess (Horologist) for putting in £5 extra so that he didn't have to take the 'Perpetual Raffle Prize of Dog Days fame' home with him, and also to Richard Atkins for the £6 nominating Merek'n'Dary to look after the prize till next year!! Subject: RE: Bedworth (UK) Folk Festival 2008 From: Singing Referee Date: 01 Dec 08 - 01:42 PM What everyone else has said! I too was blown away by Barry and Ingrid. I'd only heard snipets before. Wonderful! But it's such a great singer's festival. That Voices concert was stunning! Hope George P is feeling better. I'm not surprised you couldn't stick with it on Sunday, mate. You didn't look well when we saw you on Sunday morning. Guess you won't be at Herga tonight then? The set we heard on Friday was great though. We had fun with our sets as well. 30 minutes freezing our bits off on the outdoor sage! Thanks to John Kearney for the kind words after our Conie Club set on Saturday. And to Laurence and Graham for the sound. But of course extra special thanks to Malc and Gill, who absolutely made our weekend by inviting us back next year. (You weren't pissed were you Malc? You did mean it?) |
Subject: RE: Bedworth (UK) Folk Festival 2008 From: Sue the Borderer Date: 01 Dec 08 - 12:07 PM I wrote this on 28th Nov - at 5am (mudcat timimg) - but I've only just managed to post it! Oh dear! I should have been there! But by the time I'd called the AA out twice on Friday afternoon, I realised it was not to be. I was on my way, driving over Exmoor and the second call-out was only six miles further on from the first. I did get home safely, with the AA following most of the way. Now all I've got to do is find out what the problem is and hope I can get somewhere to get it fixed. Apologies to anyone who went along to dance or play for Herbaceous Border only to find it wasn't on. I tried to contact everyone who'd told me they were coming and I know posters were put up on my behalf. Ah well. Hope you all had a great time. Sue (Reading the intervening posts, it sounds like you all did.) |

Thanks to Gill and Malc and their legion of helpers and thanks to the gentleman who handed my watch over to the stewards when I lost it at the swan made my smile even bigger |
Subject: RE: Bedworth (UK) Folk Festival 2008 From: GUEST,Gill Bedworth Date: 01 Dec 08 - 09:50 AM I've been sitting here reading all of your kind messages and I must say thanks to all the people who bought tickets, because quite honestly without 'you' the festival would never happen. Thanks also go to the 'Guests' what a cracking weekend of song they gave us and such variety too. The stewards also deserve a vote of thanks for keeping everyone 'safe' and helping at the various venues with the cleaning up and setting up for the many events which took place over the weekend. A very special thanks for Martin and Margaret who co-ordinated the stewards and worked extremely hard and long hours both before and during the weekend. Thanks also go the Task Force whose job it is to make sure that the weekend runs smoothly Last but not least is Malc of course. As well as holding a full time 'day' job (which is very time consuming) he still manages to find the time to organise such a special weekend. Well done mate, you now deserve a rest - not too long a rest though cos we've got next year's to start planning!! . Thank you everyone for the wonderful comments I feel really proud to be part of the 'Management Team' of such a well received festival. See you all next year. Have a lovely Christmas. Thanks a million Gill |

Subject: RE: Bedworth (UK) Folk Festival 2008 From: Moses Date: 01 Dec 08 - 07:43 AM Another great Bedworth Festival! Thoroughly enjoyed it - even the Market-place spot where we sang through a mist of breath in the freezing air. Sorry we missed the Mudgather but we just couldn't fit it in. And sorry our sets clashed so we missed Les Sullivan who we know & love - but we did sing one of his songs at the White Swan. Lovely to hear Hils & PapaG on Friday, 'The voices' on Saturday and Malc&Gill and Barrie&Ingrid and of course Jez on Sunday. And thanks to all the other performers and helpers who made the weekend such a treat. And of course, special thanks to Malc & Gill for making it all possible. Christine |

Well done all you stewards and other helpers - bless ya! Thanks to Louise and Alicia for putting me up (putting up with me????) Massive thanks to the audiences there! You sang mightily for me - Bless! A grand fest, a real 'singers' fest this one! Highly reccomended!! See you next year, for sure. Duncan (McFarlane) |
Subject: RE: Bedworth (UK) Folk Festival 2008 From: George Papavgeris Date: 01 Dec 08 - 05:25 AM My already knackered back got progressively worse over the weekend, to the point where I had to cancel the Sunday night appearance and head for home with my back counting all the bumps between Bedworth and Chesham. I averaged 35 mph on a trip that I normally do at 60mph average even in traffic. Muscles screaming, early to bed - thankfully I am a lot better this morning, though far from brilliant. But all of that did not detract from a wonderful BFF once more. Nice to see all the good friends again, to get the cuddles from Jill and Gill, from Rhiannon, Les (he's been to Greece, we understand each other) and Duncan (OK, so we're an item)... Surprise of the weekend: the guy at the front in the Civic Lounge on Friday night, shouting "It's the 1st November on Monday" after each song (but he came and thanked me afterwards!). Also got to enjoy Patti and Ned for a full set, for once - great! Very good understated performance, lovely material, Patti might as well be nicknamed after her excellent concertina playing as for the spoons, and Ned's guitar work so well interwoven that you could miss it unless you looked out for it (as I was). And it was great fun to sing with Tina, of course, what a voice! I also enjoyed the pleasant surprise and enjoyment on Vanessa's face (and Kitty's, and others') at discovering Barrie and Ingrid Temple - I'd heard them before and knew what to expect, so I just smiled smugly at Nessie as if to say "told you so". Aren't they a breath of fresh air for the South, though! There's something about songs from the North East that I find irresistible, and Barrie and Ingrid have to be among the top performers of such material. I realised that Ingrid might well be Mary Humphreys' long lost sister - they both have an infectious smile when they sing, and I find myself with a silly grin on my face after each number! Wonderful, just wonderful. And to hear Jez singing "Aloysius" and "Vikings", two of my favourite songs of his, and Les Sullivan belting out his gems (another case of me looking smug and "toldyouso"), and to join in the Woodshed Boys with Duncan and to drown in the volume of JJG (Jim-Johnny-Graeme), and the harmonies of GU4 and Penny Royal... But for me the best moment was Malc's face on Sunday afternoon, when I cried off the lst appearance because of my back. The kindness in his face and the tone of his voice as he told me not to be silly and go home made me bleed. Malc, you put on one hell of a festival. But I think you're also one hell of a guy. |

Subject: RE: Folklore: Bedworth (UK) Folk Festival 2008 From: bubblyrat Date: 23 Nov 08 - 02:44 PM I will be working at the additional campsite, and my understanding of the situation as of now,Sunday,23rd November,is that the overflow site will be for ARTISTES & STEWARDS only,so don't fall over yourselves trying to get on it !! Also,it will be LOCKED after 0130 on Fri & Sat nights (I have got to lock the gate Sat.night,or rather Sun morning ---lucky me !! ).I imagine therefore, that some artistes and stewards already booked on the RC site, will be relocated to the overflow site,to provide more room at RC site----if you see what I mean !!! |
Subject: RE: Folklore: Bedworth (UK) Folk Festival 2008 From: My guru always said Date: 23 Nov 08 - 01:07 PM NEWSFLASH from Malc!! Due to the hard work of one of our organisers, we have managed to aquire some additional caravan and campervan parking just a few hundred yards from the Rugby Club. We know a lot of people have been disappointed that they have been unable to book in vans as we were full - we can accommodate an additional 30 or so units so if you are interested go to the web site and book up quickly - vans can only be booked with full week-end tickets I'm afraid, and are very much first come first served! We will open the online booking until the extra places are filled and these will only be available by secure on-line booking (via PayPal), and - when they are gone they are gone! The full programme is also now on the web site if you want to know what is happening when. Our good friends, and partners, at THE CIVIC HALL in BEDWORTH are already looking towards Bedworth 2009 and we have Ralph McTell booked in for the Friday of the festival next year (and a draw in the programme for FREE full tickets for next year including the Ralph McTell concert - so don't forget your programme!) We have a few late additions to the line up listed on the web site, and are still happy to welcome any additional dance sides that would fancy dancing for us and adding to the atmosphere! Thanks for your time, and hope to see you next week-end! Malc Gurnham Festival Director - Bedworth Folk Festival |

Subject: RE: Folklore: Bedworth (UK) Folk Festival 2008 From: My guru always said Date: 23 Nov 08 - 05:10 AM Kitty I'm pretty sure that the MudGather will be a seamless extension of your Singaround on Saturday & I'll get along as soon as I can after my spot at the Conservative Club. It actually looks like my spot is before the concert starts which should prove amusing!! Dave, as in previous years the MudGather will probably go on for a while so please pop along as soon as you're free! It seems to clash with a lot of the program I'm afraid, maybe next year we can persuade Malc to make it a bit nearer tea-time which would be easier for most Catters I think. I'm going to miss loads of my favourite folkies performing, but it does mean that I'll get more chocolate - Thanks Moses *grin* Acorn4 & Julia, please come along to the Gather if you can! John J - looking forward to seeing you again, please give my regards to your Mum, hope her leg is improving. Sorry you won't be able to come along Alison (& Steve), hope you celebrate well with your daughter in St Andrews.
