When I first signed on I used the name Fingers being a melodeon player. It was also a joke as clumsy people are sometimes called 'fingers'. I lost the signon so signed on again as Manitas. This is a reference to the joke name Manitas de Plumbos which is itself a reference to the flamenco guitarist Manitas de Plata (silver fingers).

I think mine is pretty obvious - I always feel like an imposter here because I can neither play nor sing. I just love music. ( oh, and I do sing - but only when at home)

My real name was taken from the villain in a Zane Grey novel,( Nevada, I think it was.)

Cheers, Cedar

its very interesting actually sorry i use short-hand typing i'm from a lazy texting generation. i forgot to tell you i'm Dorrie as it is my dogs name and i didn't want to use my real name when i started because i wasn't sure what it was going to all be like. My dog is name after dorrie the witch from a childrens story book i was reading when i got Dorrie on my 4th birthday. Sorry that was quite long and probably quite boring but i'd thought i'd put why i'm dorrie seen as i asked all of you. love Dorrie xxx

I've never answered one of these (I don't think), but I think I will this time.

This is the first and only discussion forum I've ever participated in. When I first joined, I noticed that a lot of people have names that are playful and fun, or have some kind of meaning. I thought about doing something like that, but I kind of knew that whatever I picked for myself, I would get sick of eventually.

So I decided to be myself. Carol = my first name, and C = the first initial of my last name.

Actually, Ur is one of the very first ancient agricultural cities, along with Uruk and Chatal Huyuk...all in the middle East. Ur is in modern-day Iraq. The biblical Abraham, was originally named Abram and was from Ur.

No mystery in mine, as has been said before, it's just a natural progression from my name, Kat LaFrance, and I do seem to laugh a lot. Didn't like the way katlaf/katlaffing looked, so I spelled it the other way. If I had used the name I was born with it would've been kathud/kathudding!**BG**

I'm a complicated guy Catspaw. THAT'S why I play folk music. It helps me forget the real world. By the way, how did you know my name was Jablonski?

When I first came around here, I was going to call myself 'Doc Jr.' Simply a joke honoring my musical hero Doc Watson. I was warned that some people would not get the humor and think I was actually comparing myself to Doc, rather than the hacker I was (I'm improving). Nobody actually calls me 'Marty' (it's always 'Martin') so I used 'Martin D' for a while, but then some people thought I was using a guitar model for a nickname. My brother Anglicised our family name to 'Dawson' (it's a tongue-twister in it's original form).....ah to hell with it. Once I DO learn to do justice to some of Doc Watson's songs, I'll go back to 'Doc jr.' but for the time being...

Hyla is the genus name of the tiny Spring Peeper tree frog (they are so small they can sit comfortably on your thumbnail). They are one of heralds of spring in Pennsylvania, with their musical songs sounding like distant sleigh bells.

Like Sarah, I found "Sam" well and truly gone when I joined Mudcat. Since I make my living driving a 25 year old bus, and we trade as Sam (& Billy the Bus), I decided to use my old mate's name as my Mudcat "Handle".

Cheers - Sam

Dorrie, I really hate to be such a nit picker, but I personally really hate stuff like "ur", "r u", etc. Now, on to your real question.

I never really liked my "christian" name, Mary, very much, so when I joined the SCA (Medieval re enactment), they offered me a chance to change my name. I chose Sorcha niGhlais........which means "shining one who is the daughter of Mr. Green". My maiden name is Green, and I like Sorcha (Sor-kh-ah), so I use it now for a LOT of stuff besides SCA.

Lots of people pronunce it Sor-sha, which is OK too. I have ended up being Sorsh (sic)the Scorch..........who tries hard to keep her temper............uh, uh.????
