sh*t does that mean if I can't find eighty quid I have to be there? Can you make it in York as my bike is only just younger than my legs and I have to wait til next July for my bus pass (which is a swiz cos I have my senior citizens rail card now!) as for pensions I started paying for one when I was 19 and thought nowt of it, now it pays me a weeks wages a month which is better than a kick up the arse from a hobnail boot! Anyway until I shake of this ague I ain't going nowhere (homage to fogger!)

Dead right foggers! Mr & Mrs Duck ran a great Yorkshire folk weekend and we all had a pretty good time because, despite a bit of rain and the odd windy episode (weatherwise) it was well organised and publicised.
On this thread, however, who's Margaret Walters? How can it be a Yorkshire traditional singing weekend if Yorkshire traditional singers can't go? Surely it's a private gathering of invited singers somewhere in Yorkshire? Oh yes, Ray, we haven't been invited either. In fact , an event that isn't publicised is likely to be a non-event?

As a resident of the Sheffield area, that fast emerging new republic of folk music, I would like to offer some clarification. I have quite categorically not seen no publicity about a trad sining weekend in august, sept or october. The fees may or may not range from zero to £80, and I have definitely been invited or not, as the case may be. If it were indeed the case that I had surely not been invited to this mystery gathering, I would instead squirrel away that £80 for my pension, which I also a figment of my imagination since the credit crunch, the public sector squeeze and the hacking scandal, has melted like snow in the sun.

So - to other yorkshire singers, I will definitely not see you there, and I would suggest that we collectively prevail upon the lovely Mr and Mrs Duck to organise another Yorkshire Mudgather for 2012, given that the one Jane put together this year was publicised to the extent that 30+ of us all turned up, cost considerably less than £80, and it was truly excellent!

whoa, I think people were only commenting about the lack of publicity in Yorkshire, the proposed venue. I don't think the Four Fools festival is anywhere near Yorkshire, is it? My opinion, for what it is worth, there is quite a large following of the genre in Yorkshire and not to publicise it in the locality is a bit of a gaffe.

Leaflets were being handed out at the Four Fools festival, among other places, for the Yorks trad singing weekend. I don't think there was anything particularly "invite only" about it. The people seemed keen for enthusiastic singers to go along. No need for carping ... it's just some enthusiasts getting off their butts and starting a new participatory event. From small beginnings... A cause for rejoicing rather than taking umbrage.

We didn't get an invite either, that is curious, right under our snecks.......so why no publicity?

~There is another singing weekend going on in Yorkshire in the Autumn- and you don't need an invite!

It's run by Fay Hield and has many different tutors covering workshops, singarounds and lectures, including (but not limited to!); Fay Hield, Jon Boden, Nancy Kerr, Hannah James, Martin Carthy.

It's called "Soundpost Singing Weekend"- if you google it, I'm sure it will appear. I think it's £80 for the whole weekend. :)

I wasn't invited, either - and I only live a couple of miles away. Oh, I'm not a trad. singer - that must be it!

So, who are the "in crowd" then? I mean if neither Ray nor Nutty have been invited it can't be much of a do can it!

Tell you what, why don't we organise our own proper "Yorkshire Weekend" just to annoy them!

With all due respect, I said "effectively" invite only (in that details were sent to people who had been to the predecessor event and were interested in carrying on although in a different location). You wouldn't have heard about it, as it didn't exist before this year. The limited places on it were, as far as I know, fully booked some time ago.

I had wind of some such event a while ago, I haven't been invited either

Hope to see some people at Bradfield Trad w/ed, I haven't been invited there either ~ I will say no more

Ray

PS - I'm holding a Lancashire Traditional Singing Weekend on the second last weekend in July and no-one else is invited. Just me. But on the last weekend you're all welcome to attend our open Ballad Session at 4pm on the Saturday of The Durham Folk Party.

indeed I met John Greaves last week and he now lives there.

I smile at the thoughts of John Greaves at the Helmsley Folk Weekend. In an ideal world, eh?

I too found this one on Margaret's website and like Nutty I wondered why I'd never come across it before.
What a shame now it turns out to be yet another cliquey "invite only" weekend to cross off the potential calendar.
A Yorkshire Singing Weekend that Yorkshire singers can't go and enjoy? Crazy, man!

Nutty, this is the Yorkshire Traditional Singing weekend, a successor to the Dorset Singing Weekend which was run until last year by John Waltham. Very limited numbers, and fully booked. It is effectively in practice an "invitation only" event.
