Subject: RE: Bob Zentz house concert in Maine 21 Aug 2010 From: Barbara Shaw Date: 02 Nov 10 - 08:51 PM Two videos from the house concert have finally been uploaded to youtube. Sorry for the poor quality of the recording: I did them on my iPhone, which doesn't do well in low light. Bob and Jeanne on hurdy gurdy and whistle Bob and Jeanne "Sweet Song of Yesterday" There were a few others, equally dark. Maybe another day. |
Subject: RE: Bob Zentz house concert in Maine 21 Aug 2010 From: SINSULL Date: 26 Aug 10 - 05:44 PM Come back soon Jeanne and bring Bob with you. If you time it right Jed Marum might be here or John Roberts and Deb Cowan or...it will be fun. SINS (Mary) |
Subject: RE: Bob Zentz house concert in Maine 21 Aug 2010 From: GUEST,jeannemcd Date: 26 Aug 10 - 09:43 AM Hello -- and thanks and love to all, especially hostess Mary, and host/hostess Kendall and Jacqui, who put us up (put up with us?) in the Portland area! And Charley and Judy, who opened their home to us in Richmond (happy b'day, Ch!), and Nick in Rockport, the finest luthier ever -- was there ever a richer tone than that of the low strings on an Apollonio guitar? ... and everyone who had a kind word or a great song to share. We met no strangers -- everyone was family. We are truly grateful, and reminded again why Maine is one of our favorite places on Earth! We will treasure these memories, and your kindness. Mary, the sing-around song you asked about is "By My Silence," by Ellen Bukstel and Nick Annis. There must be a Mudcat thread on it, and it is easily accessible online. There are two recorded versions; I prefer the simpler, earlier version that Bob and I first heard on Ken Connors and Cee Cee Severin's program on Radio Free Jacksonville just before Ken interviewed Bob last May -- we were so taken with the song, Bob could barely keep his mind on the interview! We've been sharing it everywhere ever since. Please check it out -- a truly wonderful song that has received many accolades but not nearly enough airplay! We also sang Lorre Wyatt & Pete Seeger's new song "God's Counting On Me, God's Counting On You," maybe the most singable song of the year, and one that -- contrary to Rolling Stone reports -- is so much more than just a BP protest song! :-) There is much more to say, and plenty more thank yous unsaid. We love you all! I will be doing research in the Northeast over the winter months and, yes, we would love to explore any chance to lure Bob north for the winter! Hope to sing with you then. Love, Jeanne |

Subject: RE: Bob Zentz house concert in Maine 21 Aug 2010 From: Bat Goddess Date: 24 Aug 10 - 10:14 AM I opened several foiled plates in the fridge looking for the key lime pie -- took each item over to the front door because foil is so damned LOUD uncrinkling and I didn't want to wake you. Linn |

Subject: RE: Bob Zentz house concert in Maine 21 Aug 2010 From: Bat Goddess Date: 23 Aug 10 - 07:10 PM Alas, I never got any of the key lime pie...and I was so hoping for a piece for breakfast on Sunday. So I got a chunk of the other pie on Sunday morn instead. It was a really, really great gathering. Nice meeting and hearing Barbara and Frankp; lovely to see Bob and Jeanne again. Linn |
Subject: RE: Bob Zentz house concert in Maine 21 Aug 2010 From: Jeri Date: 22 Aug 10 - 02:32 PM Re: tuning a 12-string: he didn't sound so bad, did he? Had a great time! The CD I bought played for a bout a minute then stopped working. I'll have to try it on my computer. Had a migraine Friday and it came back this morning. Oddly enough, it was fine when I was driving, but I got out of the car, and WHAM! The concert was wonderful. Lots of stories, and Bob sang my request "Ocean Station Bravo", that Gordon Bok has also recorded. The first time I heard it and met Bob was at the one and only beautiful little "Oak Grove" festival I attended in 199-longer-than-10-minutes-ago. I already owned a tape and I'd seen him on Armed Forces Korea Network. I got to play in Bob and Jeanne's "petting zoo" after the concert. I do like that little accordion, but luckily for everyone, I didn't try messing with the hurdy gurdy. It was good to see folks I hadn't seen for a while, and the post-concert music was great. It was great to hear both Shaws and the two songs Barbara wrote, and I'd think of more to say, but I'm tired (not to mention medicated and currently headache free). Thanks Bob and Jeanne, and THANK YOU MARY! |
Subject: RE: Bob Zentz house concert in Maine 21 Aug 2010 From: SINSULL Date: 22 Aug 10 - 12:28 PM Bob and Jeanne are a pleasure. Non-stop music from 6PM last night to noon today. I got nervous after the 35th instrument came through the door. LOL Every song had a chorus and the audience joined in enthusiastically. Popeye the Sailorman to Kendall's Reel. A Whale Of A Tale to This Little Light of Mine. We really had fun. More music afterwards and both Tom and Kendall contributed. Now I need a playlist. What is the name of the song about not caring until they came for me? Too good not to be passed on. Barbara and Frank's songs and harmonies were wonderful. Only A Miner and My Hill Home (?) were beautifully written and performed. I'm tired but very happy. Linn, Jacqui, Jeri and I contributed. Some great parodies. Did Bob ever learn how to tune a 12-string? Thank you all. Mary |
Subject: RE: Bob Zentz house concert in Maine 21 Aug 2010 From: Barbara Shaw Date: 22 Aug 10 - 10:56 AM Bob Zentz put on a wonderful concert, along with Jeanne. He gives new meaning to the term multi-instrumentalist. There must have been at least a dozen instruments around him, and he played them all well. He and Jeanne did some wonderful duets, with her on whistle? recorder? ukelele? and him on everything. It was great to meet some of the people whose names I've seen on these house concert threads, and it was fun to go to our very first house concert. Frank and I performed at one with our band, but have never been to one before. Jacqui and Sinsull assured me this was not your typical house concert... Sorry Kendall had to leave early, but we got to see and hug the ole curmudgeon. Jacqui, whom I expected to look sickly, looked terrific. Lots of fun, great people, and those desserts!! Thanks for the wonderful hospitality, Mary. |
Subject: RE: Bob Zentz house concert in Maine 21 Aug 2010 From: Charley Noble Date: 22 Aug 10 - 10:30 AM Kendall and Jacqui- Thanks for the brief reports. Bob and Jeanne are certainly fine performers, as well as great people to hang out with. And I love the quote from Curmudgeon: "Getting old is like being a Democrat; the alternative is not an option." Speaking of getting old, this evening we have a triple birthday party at the farm. Does that mean I'll be three times as old? I'll probably feel three times as old after the festivities. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: Bob Zentz house concert in Maine 21 Aug 2010 From: kendall Date: 22 Aug 10 - 07:48 AM We are going to try to get them back up here sometime this winter, so a few gigs would help defray expenses for them. What a great couple they are, and so talented. I had to miss the second half because of a splitting head ache that started at mid afternoon and would not let me up. Getting old is like being a democrat; the alternative is not an option. (Curmudgeon) |
Subject: RE: Bob Zentz house concert in Maine 21 Aug 2010 From: jacqui.c Date: 22 Aug 10 - 07:09 AM We had the BEST time! Bob is an amazing entertainer with the ability to play so many instruments well. His partner, Jeanne McDougal, joined him in the second half, and they complement each other so well. Bob even made the hurdy gurdy sound classy! More later - we're off out in the antique car this morning..... |

After that we usually finish with a song circle until everyone gives up and goes to bed. |

Subject: RE: Bob Zentz house concert in Maine 21 Aug 2010 From: Barbara Shaw Date: 19 Aug 10 - 06:37 PM Great! I'll make a reservation tonight at Wassamki or Bayley's. We can run with or without power, but thanks. I'm sure I won't get a chance to cook (and you should all probably be glad) so I'll get something at the bakery? And some wine? We'll be the ones arriving in the big white breadbox. Before 6. |
Subject: RE: Bob Zentz house concert in Maine 21 Aug 2010 From: SINSULL Date: 19 Aug 10 - 06:17 PM I have a huge driveway, Barbara. I am sure we can fit it - been done before multiple times. There is an outlet near the driveway to keep things running too. We start at 6PM with a buffet. But arrive early to claim the driveway for your motor home. LOL Kendall can give you directions. So - multiple coffee and pots and toasters and if necessary a requiem for the dishwasher. I love it when a plan comes together. Don't forget folks Jacqui had a birthday this week and we are still celebrating. The uglier the better. SINS |

Subject: RE: Bob Zentz house concert in Maine 21 Aug 2010 From: Barbara Shaw Date: 19 Aug 10 - 11:04 AM We may be stopping in Portland on our way to Litchfield (Blistered Fingers Festival) but not sure whether it will be on Saturday or Sunday. Is there room in your yard for a 30' motorhome to park for awhile? Kendall has seen it and can judge. We'll be staying at a campground, so would drive it over if it would fit and then be able to get to the house concert. And we've got 2 perc coffee pots (lg and sm) and a toaster. Oh, and what time does all this happen? |
