Subject: RE: BS: Anagrams of your name? From: Desdemona Date: 21 Jan 02 - 08:20 PM Excellent concept! I came up with 133 alternatives....some of the best ones: darning bee, grenade nib, baring eden, nearing bed, badger nine(my code name henceforth!), danger bien(my Bond Girl persona!), and my #1 favourite: "needing bra"! |
Subject: RE: BS: Anagrams of your name? From: AliUK Date: 21 Jan 02 - 07:57 PM Putting in my middle name the one that appealed to me most was - MOBSTERA LABIA JAR I which was quite nice, but just my first and my last name ( Alistair Robb) I got BOBTAIL ARRIS/RABBI TAILORS and RABBIT SAILOR which I thought was quite spiffy! |
Subject: RE: BS: Anagrams of your name? From: bernil Date: 21 Jan 02 - 05:36 PM Poor John! No anagram! But try it with three words (set the "Number of Words" to 3) and you'll find a lot of nice things. I don't understand everything but you get nice words like honey, enjoy, noble! Oh noble joy>! ;-) You can also get some nice things from Smallpiper. Simpler pal or smiler papl... but I don't really know how you understand those things. Some words can mean many different things in Swedish... As for me, if I may use my Swedish name, Berit Nilsson, in an English anagram I think I'd like Insolent ribs> or perhaps Inborn stiles> or... Rob's leninist> ;-) Berit |

Subject: RE: BS: Anagrams of your name? From: CapriUni Date: 21 Jan 02 - 11:00 AM Comment on this whole thing in general: Yes... but so many of the 'words' produced are really proper names (my last name is relatively common enough, it seems, for it to count as a 'word' -- one anagram that came up was simply last name first and first name last). My suspicion is that this generator simply looks for words copied out of a stored dictionary: obscure inventors, abreviations, and all. What would happen if we applied the rules of Scrabble [tm] to this exercise (no words that are always spelled with a capital letter, and no abrevations))? I know I'd get a shorter list, but one with a higher percentage of phrases that make sense. |

Subject: RE: BS: Anagrams of your name? From: swirlygirl Date: 20 Jan 02 - 04:59 PM Sorry Murray!! Forgot my persons for a bit! "Opera" is the plural of "opus" so that's OK Murray Just discovered, by doing the sensible dictionary thing which I should have done in the first place, that opera as a singular noun can mean pains, exertion or labour...so work it is then... And temero, -are is a verb too... meaning to defile etc...so with a bit of imagination and bad scribal copying and stuff then temet could have been interpreted as a verb...esp when things started being copied by non-clerics...(but would actually be temerat I think) Maybe EJ was more right than we first thought... :o) xxxx |

Subject: RE: BS: Anagrams of your name? From: GUEST,Genie (sans cookie) Date: 19 Jan 02 - 06:38 PM Well, you can't make anything out of "Genie" except maybe "I, Gene," but my full name morphs to any of the following [which could be signs (on a business) or headlines, maybe]: -Ant Jeep Near Truth -June Hatter Pen Art -Herr Tut Japan teen -perjure Nat, the ant Genie (I don't have an anagram-generator, so there may be more I haven't dreamed up yet, but I'm kind of stuck with present tense verbs and singular nouns, with no "s," "i," "g," or "d.") BTW, "Catspaw" also morphs to "Cat Swap" (for swingers who are into bestiality, too!) |
Subject: RE: BS: Anagrams of your name? From: Gloredhel Date: 19 Jan 02 - 02:59 PM Anyone for a "hedge roll"? (This is a rhetorical question.) Also came up with "hell gored." My real name yielded a recipe for "claret corn eel," which isn't very appealing, and an "electron lacer." Adding my middle name, I got lots of interesting things, including the earthlike tenor Clarence, an anchorite claret kneeler, and the pseudonym I'll use if I ever decide to write trashy novels: Henrietta Lenore Cackler. (Thank heaven that's nothing like my real name!) Incidentally, I left out a myriad of combinations using the word "rectal", thinking that might prove too difficult to resist for some here. |
Subject: RE: BS: Anagrams of your name? From: CapriUni Date: 19 Jan 02 - 02:00 AM Well, putting in my real first and last names, and requesting 2 word results came up with:
glim annal According to my American Heritage Dictionary (third edition), the words: annal, liman, ginn and inman do not exist. So the anagram generator really had to stretch to reach a total of ten with my name (the first two in the list kept my last name intact, and just played around with my first name in a rather boring way... Adding my middle name, and moving up to 4 words, came up with something alarmingly cannibalistic: grill ma, fry anna |

Subject: RE: BS: Anagrams of your name? From: Murray MacLeod Date: 18 Jan 02 - 02:01 PM swirly, at least your latin is better than EJ's, but still not qute up to speed. "rotas" would be second person singular, and "temet" would have to be from the verb "temere" (Is there such a verb? I haven't a clue). "Opera" is the plural of "opus" so that's OK Murray
|
Subject: RE: BS: Anagrams of your name? From: swirlygirl Date: 18 Jan 02 - 01:53 PM A wincing catty epigram will do me just fine thanks.. And EJ's Latin is well off unless it's some sort of later regional medieval thing... sator - fine...well done arepo - never seen it in my life...have no idea what it is! doesn't even look like a name... temet - is probably from temero, are to voiolate, defile etc... opera is not a valid verb, it's a noun. The verb would have to be operat for 3rd pers sg rotas - could be 3rd person sg verb roto, -are to whirl, to turn (like a wheel so I see where that comes from) or acc. pl. wheels He tries his best he does the poor lamb... :) xxx

Subject: RE: BS: Anagrams of your name? From: Murray MacLeod Date: 18 Jan 02 - 11:37 AM EJ, that palindrome looks distinctly iffy to me. Admittedly, my Latin is a tad rusty nowadays, but I do know that rotas is the accusative plural of "rota", and that the correct Latin for "of a wheel" would be the genitive singular, rotae.
