Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: Joe Offer Date: 28 Sep 12 - 12:34 AM I'm available for transportation toward Virginia on Monday. If the weather's good, I'm heading for Front Royal and the Skyline Drive, which will take me through most of Virginia north of Fredericksburg. I'm in Fredericksburg now, heading north on U.S. 301 on Friday afternoon. Will that help anyone? -Joe- (530)613-9609 [cell] |

Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: ranger1 Date: 21 Sep 12 - 08:31 PM Ok, train travel is looking better and better for me. Can someone in the DC area get me from the train station to the Getaway? Is there any particular station that works better than another? The 6:15 AM train from Boston is looking like my best bet, which would arrive at Union Station at 2:00 PM. Any help before I book my tickets would be appreciated. |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: Janie Date: 20 Sep 12 - 01:01 AM If push comes to shove, Art, and you are willing to arrive in Washington waaay to early, I can detour to give you a ride in, but doubt it will be necessary for either of us. Just want to assure you will not be left "in the lurch," no matter what. |

Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: Bill D Date: 18 Sep 12 - 08:57 PM If one takes Amtrack to the downtown DC station, it is an easy ride on Metro to the Silver Spring station, where there are various local folkies who might help. Stay in touch as we analyze the situation and make some calls. It DOES depend on time of arrival,,,etc. |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: artbrooks Date: 18 Sep 12 - 08:39 PM When I was first considering taking the train all the way, I was told that there would be better prospects for rides from the DC station than Balt. |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: ranger1 Date: 18 Sep 12 - 08:23 PM This little ranger is debating taking Amtrak south, but not sure which station is best, or how I'll get to the Getaway from there. |

Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: Genie Date: 14 Jun 12 - 03:53 PM Glad you and Jen are coming to Getaway this year, Art. Last year we had at least 6 people from NC (3 different cars) at Getaway, and I hitched a ride back with Dani and Abby (then took Amtrak from Raleigh to Greensboro for under $11). I'm hoping there will be someone driving back this year who has room for another rider, but if not, the train (or maybe Craigslist rideshare) is an option. BTW and FWIW, my Southwest airfare of $320 is for two one-way tickets, one from Portland to Baltimore/DC and one from Raleigh/Durham to Portland. Two one-way tickets are as cheap as one round-trip ticket. I really love Southwest's policy of not charging fees for changing flights. If you need to cancel one flight, what you paid for the ticket can be applied to any other ticket within one year. So if I have the chance to get a free stand-by ticket to the Baltimore/DC area via a friend (which is a possibility), I can apply my $153 to some other flight that I take before June 13 next year. |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: artbrooks Date: 14 Jun 12 - 09:52 AM Genie, we are taking the train down to Raleigh. |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: Genie Date: 14 Jun 12 - 03:20 AM Heads up, folks! Southwest Airlines is having a huge airfare sale, with fares as low as $99 one-way and up to about $155, depending on distance. I just booked round trip from Portland, Oregon, to Baltimore/DC and back for less than $320. It's really hard to beat that -- and Southwest does not charge a fee for changing your itinerary (to different flights) or for the first two checked bags. Now I just have to find a ride from the Getaway to North Carolina (Raleigh, Durham, Greensboro or somewhere within an hour or so of there). Really looking forward to staying up till ungodly hours and being totally wiped out after marathon music sessions! Genie |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: Joe Offer Date: 07 Jun 12 - 09:16 PM I always make the Getaway into a vacation - one time, it was a 6-week vacation. Last year, I went to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. The town was so pretty and the beach was so nice and the crab so tasty, I'm tempted to make every year a vacation at Rehoboth. Anybody wanna join me walking the beach? -Joe- |

Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: Amos Date: 07 Jun 12 - 10:24 AM That's my Skippah!! It is so strange, is it not, that there is this whole universe of affections and action and meaning that goes on for three days and then hibernates for a whole year, and then starts right back up as though it was the next morning? It's a time warp, man, a musical wormhole. A |

Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: Genie Date: 30 Apr 12 - 02:48 AM Still juggling the options of coming to Getaway this year or in 2013, since it seems unlikely I'll be able to afford the airfare for both. I'm not racking up the frequent flyer miles the way I used to anymore, so after I use what I already have for a ticket, it may take 3 years to earn another one. Reality bites sometimes. Anyway, I hope to be there either this fall or in 2013. Genie |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: ranger1 Date: 29 Apr 12 - 06:55 PM Amos, the Getaway is a priority, isn't it? Me, I dumped a year-round job so I could get back to the Getaway! Well, maybe that was only part of the reasons for my job change, but it was a pretty big one. I have already cleared it with the boss at the new/old job. Life is getting better by the second. |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: Gorgeous Gary Date: 29 Apr 12 - 06:01 PM I'm lookin' forward to this year, but, it looks like I'll have to be sure and have twice as much fun as usual. It'll be **my** turn to be knocked out by work commitments in 2013. -- Gary |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: maeve Date: 29 Apr 12 - 01:12 PM Kendall has started a thread looking for house concert leads for two members of the Maine trio Meteora; Kat Logan and Jim Loney. http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=144646&messages=2 They will be attending the Getaway this year and are looking for house concerts on the way down (and maybe on the way home?) I'd recommend Kat and Jim even if they weren't friends; good music, wide variety of genres, both vocal harmony and fine instrumentals presented by charming people. Maeve |

Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: Amos Date: 25 Apr 12 - 10:07 AM Aw, Lonesome, I didn't mean to cast aspersions about you being a Kahuna or nothin'. I figured if you were hot by a bus they'd cover the gap somehow until you got out of the hospital, right? An intern suddenly gets thrown into the hole as Show In Charge. Someone calls Manpower Inc. and geets a wino to do it... A |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: Lonesome EJ Date: 25 Apr 12 - 12:18 AM OK, I'll play hookey from the Trade Show. Now all I need is someone to employ me since I won't have a position afterwards. Amos seems to think I am some sort of Big Kahuna at my company who can exempt himself at will from such menial tasks. Oh, that it were so. This show is set for the last weekend in Sep/ first weekend of October time frame, as is the Getaway. I will consider flying from Dallas to BWI again, but it's tough when you only get maybe 30 hours of Getaway, plus logistics of bringing 2 sets clothes, etc. We'll see. |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: Amos Date: 24 Apr 12 - 09:47 PM Ernie Johnson, who has not lived up to the promise, started this one: CHO: Lord willing and the creek don't rise, I'm going to the Getaway. Out where the lonesome seagull cries, on the edge of the Chesapeake Bay All the folks stay up all night, Making music 'til the rooster cries, Lord willing and the creek don't rise, I'm going to the Getaway. I've gone to work most every day The whole dang year it seems Trying to forget the singing sounds That show up in my dreams I've been through bitter winter months And hellish summer days And now by God, I've had enough, I'm going to the Getaway CHO I long to see a country road That leads up the shore With folkies wandering 'cross fields, Two hundred souls or more. I hunger for the songs they sing And the funny things they say, So mister, stamp my ticket quick, I'm going to the Getaway! CHO I want to hear old Bobert shout The blues when they're done right. And watch Big Mick put the Irish out When he gets a little tight I want to hear sweet Liz LaPrelle Hold the whole place in her sway. By God I'm done with the working life, I am going to the Getaway. CHO When I get there I'll drink all night, And sing a thousand tunes And if I watch the windows right, Catch sight of Ernie's moon! I'll listen to the cowboy songs While the ladies dance and play. Be still my heart, I'm off to start And I'm going to the Getaway! Crude MP3 available on request. A |

Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: Bobert Date: 24 Apr 12 - 07:24 PM Every year EJ pulls this same game... "I gotta work" and then manages to show up... He'll be there... BTW, Spawz... I considered your idea for about, ahhhhh, 1 second and it sucks... Dani & Janie??? Ummmmmmm, can I get a ride with ya'll... I promise to behave and I don't take up much room... B~ |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: artbrooks Date: 24 Apr 12 - 05:38 PM As someone said earlier, the Getaway is cheaper if you belong to the The Folklore Society of Greater Washington...enough cheaper that the difference more than makes up for the membership. I guess that we are members every other year, more or less...gotta do that one of these days. Having members in New Mexico, California and (I assume) the UK puts a new meaning on "greater", doesn't it? |
