Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: Nancy King Date: 24 Apr 12 - 04:17 PM Ah, you're in fine form today, Amos. Looking forward to seeing you soon. And all the rest of you -- Hillary, Ernie, Janet, Jeri and god-knows-who-else -- make your plans for 2013 NOW! See Charlie Baum's post above for the dates. |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: Amos Date: 24 Apr 12 - 01:50 PM You had a daughter by Lake Tahoe? How did that work, exactly? A |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: Celtaddict Date: 24 Apr 12 - 01:35 PM How disheartening to be reading all this manic anticipation and knowing that I won't be there! But I have a better excuse than EJ: my daughter by Lake Tahoe is expecting her first baby October 6! So, maybe we'll need another Skype set up... |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: Amos Date: 24 Apr 12 - 10:46 AM Look, Ernie, Jeri, you guys need to understand priorities. Ten years from now, looking back, you won't be laughing about how great the trade show in Texas was, will ya? How glad you are that you went to the trade show? How magical the turn of fate that lead you to the door of that trade show? How memorable the products on display, the subtleties of the plastics used, the mystic, transcendent vibe that formed over the happy trade show attendees? Hell no, you won't. But the Getaway, now, that's a different story altogether. You could tell your grandchildren about that, yowzah, and they wouldn't interrupt! You'll dine out for weeks on Getaway tales, but the trade show will be the subject of a dry report in Microsoft Word that no-one will read. You'll look back years from now and sigh with a smile, thinking how glad you are you made that scene! What's really important here? A |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: Amos Date: 24 Apr 12 - 09:59 AM Goddamit, Lonesome, can't you just take vacation time and send someone else to the damn trade show? Seriously!! It's not like we get to play every weekend or something!! Jaysus! A |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: My guru always said Date: 24 Apr 12 - 08:18 AM Thanks for posting next year's dates Charlie. I'm still hopeful that we'll be able to join you one year soon. It's a fabulous weekend and we just loved meeting all you good Folks & staying in the Peace Cabin! |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: MMario Date: 23 Apr 12 - 09:28 AM I don't have any problems sleeping in Peace - but then again, I grew up in a household of 9 and can sleep through just about anything. |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: Charlie Baum Date: 22 Apr 12 - 12:00 AM And for the folks who have already discovered conflicts and can't make it to this year's Getaway, the place has been reserved for the 2013 Getaway: Friday Oct 4, 2013 through Monday morning Oct 7, 2013. Mark your calendars now. To Cool Beans--there are quiet accommodations available, where you can actually get sleep. If you want sleep, avoid the Peace Cabin, which is the party dorm. And if you want a quiet experience, let me recommend that you sit by the side of the bay at sunrise and watch the light and the boats on the water. --Charlie Baum |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: Lonesome EJ Date: 21 Apr 12 - 11:56 AM One last thing...its in a beautiful sight next to Chesapeake Bay. More than once I've stood with friends singing up the sun rise over the bay, an experience not to be forgotten. Just go. You will be glad you went. |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: Nancy King Date: 21 Apr 12 - 10:39 AM LEJ and MMario have described things pretty well. And very concisely. Yes, almost all rooms have 2 sets of bunks. The application form will be ready by mid-June, and will allow one to choose a quiet cabin or otherwise. For a description of last year's Getaway, look here. We will have different guests this year (still working on that), but accommodations will be the same. Prices have not yet been set for this year, but if there are changes, they won't be by much. If you were to put "Getaway" (minus the quotation marks) into the Mudcat filter box, and set the time to 2 or 3 years, you'll get more discussion about the Getaway than you can possibly read. We'd love to see you there! --Nancy |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: MMario Date: 21 Apr 12 - 09:36 AM If I remember correctly most of the rooms have two sets of bunk beds (up to four people per room) the cabins have rest rooms and showers and a communal room as well as the bedrooms. Peace cabin is usually designated at the MUSIC ALL NIGHT cabin - I'm told the others are much quieter... |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: Cool Beans Date: 21 Apr 12 - 09:22 AM So you stay in communal cabins, not private rooms? Is it ever quiet? |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: Lonesome EJ Date: 20 Apr 12 - 04:29 PM Bunk beds, cheaper rates if you'll take a top rack, which is what I do since I rarely sleep at the Getaway. Stay in the Peace cabin if you want to be in the heart of the all night jamming. Sufficient toilets and showers, you'll want a sleeping bag and towel. Food in the lunchroom pretty blah, but plentiful. NO LIQUOR! (see Amos) Pace yourself (don't see Amos) |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: Cool Beans Date: 20 Apr 12 - 04:10 PM This sounds nice. I've never been and would like to go. I looked on the website but I couldn't find out some things I want to know, mainly what the accommodations are like? Do you camp? Are there private rooms? Single beds? Double beds? Floor space for sleeping bags? Inquiring minds want to know. Thanks in advance. |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: Lonesome EJ Date: 20 Apr 12 - 01:12 PM Once again, With uncanny precision, Getaway conflicts directly with an industry show I have to attend in Texas. The show ends the 29th (Saturday)so I'd be faced with spending 3 days at a hotel in TX and flying directly to BWI for just Saturday night and Sunday. Ah me. |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: MMario Date: 20 Apr 12 - 10:32 AM I've lucked out - I have two weddings to attend this fall that are "really want to attend" - not just obligations - and as it turns out one is the weekend before and one is the weekend AFTER Getaway...I think....better check those invites.... Now to figure out how to get to the renfaire in addition.... |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: catspaw49 Date: 06 Mar 12 - 11:35 AM Tell ya' Bobertz, why bother all these fine folk? Go out back with your ax on your back and jam a giant Dago bomb up your ass and point yourself North by Northheast. You might need two of the Dago Bombs so you have a second stage. Two should get you into the BaltWash area. Don't forget your cellphone..................... Spaw |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: Bill D Date: 06 Mar 12 - 11:14 AM We have come to expect Amos...Mike (had to stop and think-who?) would have made his 2nd, but for trying to relive his 20 year old persona ☺... Edmund & Charmion 'usually' represent Canada... depending on their work schedule.... them others have reasons why they haven't made it. Hey... if everyone was able to come the same year, we'd have space problems! This camp has an absolute limit of 200... and functionally a little less because of the bunk-bed situation. (A 'few' locals opt for day tripping and a couple folk have stayed in a motel) It's....ummm... addictive. This will be my 34th year, spread over 4 camps. Those who have come from Iceland, Australia, The UK, Alaska...etc. all wish travel were easier. Like the Jivaros say... "Plan a head" |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: Stilly River Sage Date: 06 Mar 12 - 12:57 AM I have a couple of trips to retrieve and then deliver my son to his university etched in stone. My high school reunion that I might actually make it to is in August. So I must pace myself. But I'll keep it in mind as something fun to do for myself this year. Do you think any others in the MOAB crowd will attend? Amos and Mike look like good possibilities - what about George, Bruce, gnu (what's your name?) and I'd love to meet Eiseley (Kathryn)! SRS |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: Bill D Date: 06 Mar 12 - 12:11 AM Some folk can resist anything but temptation..... ...and we will miss those who can...or can't help it. |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: Stilly River Sage Date: 05 Mar 12 - 11:32 PM Hmmm. Tempting. |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: John MacKenzie Date: 05 Mar 12 - 05:07 PM I won't be there with you, Jeri. |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: Jeri Date: 05 Mar 12 - 04:57 PM Oh well... there's another Getaway I won't get to. |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: My guru always said Date: 05 Mar 12 - 02:24 PM You're such a Good Boy, Joe *grin* |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: Genie Date: 05 Mar 12 - 05:30 AM Janie, FWIW, you can get from Raleigh to DC via Amtrak for $50 one way. I looked into train travel from Portland, but it does cost more than flying, plus it's a LONG time to have to sit (in seats that aren't all that comfortable) and not be able to get horizontal or even walk around a lot. I like the train for trips of just a few hours - or if I could afford a sleeping car - but not for multi-day treks where you have to sleep sitting up. Let's hope air fares don't soar between now and September. |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: Joe Offer Date: 04 Mar 12 - 08:59 PM MGAS, I would be happy to pick up UK Mudcatters at a US airport with a car. I'll even give them tours of the local lighthouses.... |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: artbrooks Date: 04 Mar 12 - 08:30 PM Janie, you can set it for arrival dates. |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: Janie Date: 04 Mar 12 - 05:45 PM Art, I admire your ability to figurte out reservations. Other than a ride from Durham to DC, I have yet to be able to figure out a reservation on dates that will work using the Amtrak website. |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: Amos Date: 04 Mar 12 - 09:49 AM Art: Thanks!! Yes, it costs more and takes longer, but what a better ride!! A |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: artbrooks Date: 04 Mar 12 - 08:47 AM Amos, the route is Albuquerque to Chicago, 29 hours, on the Southwest Chief. After a 3 hour layover, connecting to the Capitol Limited to DC (17 hours). We are actually breaking in Pittsburgh (where our daughter lives) for 2 days, but its the same train. The cost is $408 for two tickets and an additional $493 for the mini-compartment. All meals are included with the compartment. It works out to cost more than flying, I think. |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: Charlie Baum Date: 04 Mar 12 - 03:28 AM Washington is probably better than Baltimore. If you're coming in on a North-South route through the Northeast Corridor, you should realize that the BWI Amtrak Station is more-or-less at the BWI Airport, and connected to the Airport via the Airport's internal inter-airport bus system. This means that someone arriving at BWI by Amtrak could conceivably hook up with someone flying into BWI. All that said, it's probably easier to get a ride with somebody form Washington, DC. --Charlie Baum |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: My guru always said Date: 04 Mar 12 - 03:21 AM Hey Joe, can you get a plane and pick up a few UK'ers? Am I right in thinking it's the same weekend as the Portsmouth Maritime festival this year? |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: Genie Date: 04 Mar 12 - 02:32 AM Thanks, Maeve. I wasn't sure if it would be the first full weekend in October or the week before. Now I can arrange my schedule accordingly. |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: Amos Date: 03 Mar 12 - 10:59 PM Art: Wow, that's an adventure. If ya don't mind my asking, how much did it run you via Amtrak? How did they route--via Chicago or something? A |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: artbrooks Date: 03 Mar 12 - 10:03 PM Train tickets bought...arriving at DC Amtrak station at 2:40 Friday pm. |

Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: Genie Date: 03 Mar 12 - 08:58 PM Speaking of the 2012 Getaway, have the dates been decided on for sure? For people planning trips longer than 3 or 4 days it helps to have that information way ahead of time. |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: Genie Date: 02 Mar 12 - 09:32 PM I think Dani has a plan! |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: Bobert Date: 02 Mar 12 - 08:30 PM Wait a minute... I don't want to be on no bus that only turns left... I mean, yeah, I'm kinda a leftie but this ain't NASCAR... We need a bus that goes right, too... Okay, not just for political balance but for actually getting to the Getaway so... ...pass on the bus that only turns left, Dani... BTW, pick me up in Greensboro... Dibs on the the back seat... ...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.... B~ |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: Joe Offer Date: 02 Mar 12 - 08:28 PM Dang, Dani, I was trying to figure out a way to be alone with you and Janie... |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: GUEST,Dani Date: 02 Mar 12 - 08:18 PM Joe, how 'bout you get a BUS, pick up anyone in the interior between here and there, stop for Chance and Suzette, Bobert (and, I think, the P-vine should come!), then me and Janie can take over driving as we turn left up the coast. Dani |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: Joe Offer Date: 02 Mar 12 - 08:07 PM Art, you're quite well-behaved, so I think you can get a ride to the Getaway from anywhere on the East Coast. I'm probably flying into Baltimore this year, and won't mind picking you up there if that's where you end up. Hmmmm. Maybe I should hook up with Dani and Janie. They're two of my favorite people... -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: Genie Date: 02 Mar 12 - 07:36 PM Or maybe you can talk Chance and Susette to driving over from Asheville, picking you (and Amos?) up and then sharing the driving to the Getaway, Bobert? Art & Jen, let me know if you find out what Amtrak costs from where you are and if they give you the option of stopping over at various places en route without adding a lot to the cost. Genie |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: Bobert Date: 02 Mar 12 - 07:29 PM Hmmmmm??? A train??? I hadn't thought of that so I'll consider that one but here's my idea: Rather than fly to DC, Amos flies to Charlotte and spends a couple days lolly-gaging around the pool trying to impress the P-Vine and he drives us to the Getaway while I sleep in the back seat and then afterwards I drop him off in DC and drive myself home... That is, if I can't find a hitch hiker with a license and then, in that case, the hitch hiker drives us to CDharlotte while I sleep in the backseat... That's my idea... No??? Okay, Plan B... I drive to Greensbora and hook up with Dani and Janie and they drive me up while I sleep in the backseat... That works, too... B~ |
Subject: RE: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: Nancy King Date: 02 Mar 12 - 07:04 PM I expect Washington would be a better bet, as we have more folks who live here than in Baltimore. If you post some particulars closer to the event, I'm sure someone will be able to help with a ride to the camp. Looking forward to seeing you! |
Subject: Getting to 2012 Getaway From: artbrooks Date: 02 Mar 12 - 06:55 PM We are considering taking Amtrak to the Getaway. Would it be easier to hook a ride if we came in to Washington or Baltimore? |
