Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: catspaw49 Date: 05 Feb 09 - 09:25 AM Done........and as I often do, I agree with Bill. Some of the questions are like asking if I like breathing......actually in my case that would be farting.......... Spaw |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: cloudstreet Date: 05 Feb 09 - 01:34 AM Many thanks to all of those who have completed the survey so far. The count has just passed 400 (running roughly 60% Mudcat visitors). I plan at this stage to leave the survey online and accessible for a month, closing it down on the 3rd of March. I appreciate all of the various perspectives people are bringing to the survey, and will endeavour to incorporate at least the spirit of all the various contributions into my analysis, comparing these two communities. Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: Alice Date: 04 Feb 09 - 07:43 PM Finished the survey. I used to check into thesession.org once in awhile, but it is not as complete or friendly a place as Mudcat, and I've been here over 10 years. When will you have the results? |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: MegW Date: 04 Feb 09 - 07:24 PM Did it! This is interesting for me because I've been approaching Mudcat as more of a pedagogical and archival site for my own research. It's the history geek in me, I suppose! |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: Dennis the Elder Date: 04 Feb 09 - 07:18 PM Thanks , I have completed your survey ,I did not know about thesessions, I will visit the site now and dependant on what I find I may find I will answer the survey you have no doubt posted there. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: Phil Edwards Date: 04 Feb 09 - 07:05 PM Completed. I have to say I'm not sure what you're trying to do here, & in particular why there's the dual focus on The Session and the Mudcat Cafe. I found some of the questions very difficult to answer because of this: I've been 'on' the Mudcat for less than a year, but on The Session for 2-3 years; I currently visit The Session about once a month, the Mudcat daily; and so on. If you wanted participants to answer about their *primary* online community, you should have specified this. Conversely, if you wanted users of both to answer on both, you should have duplicated the questions. Interesting, though. I think the key difference between online and real-world is there's much more distance and much more intimacy online - you can spill your guts with confidence, because it feels that much less 'real'. That's just my perception, though - I'll be interested to know what you come up with. |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: VirginiaTam Date: 04 Feb 09 - 02:17 PM I played survey too. re question 12 I have more than one real world community and I would say they don't meet "same" needs as online community. They are complimentary to online community. |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: wysiwyg Date: 04 Feb 09 - 01:44 PM John, I did it. For clarification of countries' scale and geography, if yer in the UK, check with Leadfingers, John MacKenzie, and others who have traveled internationally for Mudcat Gatherings of various sorts. ~S~ |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: Bill D Date: 04 Feb 09 - 12:41 PM I did it, but I'd like to help write the questions for the next one..☺. Some of them are of the order of "why do you like eating & breathing" *grin*.... |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: katlaughing Date: 04 Feb 09 - 10:53 AM Interesting. I look forward to the conclusions, too. Done. One comment: I know we all know, but it might be better, at the beginning, to note it is the Mudcat "Cafe." (I know I am being pedantic!:-) |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: sharyn Date: 04 Feb 09 - 10:04 AM I did it, A little feedback for you, John. On surveys, it is very helpful to have an "Other" category and space for explanations in every question because surveys don't reflect the subtleties of real life. For instancem use patterns (How often do you visit the site?). Well, sometimes I don't visit for several months at a time and then I will have a lot of questions about something and visit several times a day for awhile. Not being able to check multiple answers or comment renders my answer useless because whatever I choose from the list is inaccurate. Other than that, it was pretty painless |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: Black belt caterpillar wrestler Date: 04 Feb 09 - 07:26 AM Just one thing, I have several "real world musical" communities, three morris teams, a dedicated song club, a choir, three music sessions plus other less frequent associations. It gets a bit difficult to decide how to answer how often I meet them! |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: cloudstreet Date: 04 Feb 09 - 06:06 AM HI Colin and Mr Snail. First of all, Mr Snail. I'm really after a "no" in your case. I'm investigating whether there are "real-world" groups that take the place of the online experience. With respect to both, I'm happy to receive some expansion of your experiences by email, if you're prepared to offer them. If you'd like to remain anonymous, just make that clear in the email and I will even delete your identifying info and just store the body of the email for the purposes of the paper. Email to john@cloudstreet.org Thanks again for taking the time to consider the survey. John |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: Colin Randall Date: 04 Feb 09 - 05:50 AM Also regarding "real world" communities, I would have welcomed a chance to expand on my No. I happen to be living where there are few if any opportunities but in other circumstances, eg back in London or Paris instead of being in the UAE, it would be different. Or maybe it's just my fault for being a temporary expat. |
