Subject: RE: UK What's On And Where - Folk Music From: Jon's middle daughter Date: 05 Nov 09 - 01:57 PM Last few tickets available for... Southernmost of Dales Folk Concert Saturday 7th November William Brookes School, Much Wenlock, Shropshire, TF136NB Charity folk concert in aid of Jon Hayward Memorial Trust (helping Shropshire children afford to access music) Featuring: Hoover The Dog, Harriet Bartlett, Flaxenby, Hector Gilchrist & Liz Thomson, Bill Caddick (MC) Date: 7th Nov 2009 Start: 7.30pm (doors 7pm) Price: £15 (£12) Contacts: 01746 785615 / sushayward@hotmail.com (Sue Hayward) The Jon Hayward Memorial Trust was been set up in memory of a well known Shropshire folk musician who sadly died in November 2006. Jon was passionate about music and always enjoyed sharing this with others. He particularly loved to see children developing their musical ability. He was a true Shropshire man who was born in the county and spent most of his life here. Consequently family and friends felt the Trust to be a fitting memorial to him. The Trust aims to give some financially disadvantaged children in Shropshire the opportunity to pursue an interest in music. This could be by helping parents with a up to 50% of the cost of musical instrument or singing lessons, by meeting part of the cost of instrument hire, or contributions towards the cost of other musical activities. We are now in our second year of funding students throughout the county. |

Subject: RE: UK What's On And Where - Folk Music From: Soldier boy Date: 27 Apr 09 - 07:45 PM 'The Villan' - THIS IS BRILLIANT!!!!! You have been a very, very busy bee and you have produced exactly what I have always thought was sadly lacking on the 'Mudcat'forum - - a clear, consise, well presented,at-a-glance format to promote and find a range of 'folk' events and happenings around the UK in a calendar/put it in your diary/regular weekly events, presentation. I am particularly impressed by the amount of thought and attention to detail that you have put into this - especially the clear categorisation between differing types of events e.g - UK Concerts/Festivals/Sessions(musicians)/Singarounds/Ceilidhs and even the initial links to Local Diaries/Concert Venues. I am sure that this list of categories could grow, but only slightly because you seem to have covered most of the bases, and these should hopefully be accomodated in the two blank threads you have cleverly included above to make sure that they will be at the top of the thread. The only additional post I can think of at the moment is perhaps one dedicated just to 'Folk Clubs'. I know that these are also covered under the 'Concerts' category and also 'Singarounds' and to a lesser extent 'Sessions' but perhaps they could do with their own seperate identity. I appreciate that there is always a danger of creating too many different 'categories' to try to please the traditionalists and non-traditionalists but you will never please all of the people all of the time! So having said that I will leave it up to you. What ever you do please do not go under a "Feral Folk" category which has recently been aired on Mudcat and which is attempting to present a "Whats On" kind of Permathread for 'wild/untamed' folk happenings outside of the conventional/'domesticated' Folk Festivals and Folk Concerts etc. I think it's on a hiding to nowhere. Who wants yet more new categories/pidgeon-holes/styles/sub-headings in a world that just wants'folk' to be 'folk'and does'nt want to be shoe-horned into anythig different and 'new' thank you very much! Just keep doing what you are doing because I think you are on to a winner here. And so long as you are willing and able to 'edit' the thread and add new submissions to the correct and prefered category and to delete all enteries once they are out of date to clear the decks then - good on ya! I tried to suggest a very similar format to yours to 'management' about two years ago (I think!) but it was declined on the grounds of it could take up too much space and be a nightmare to edit and keep up to date etc etc. So you have my full support my friend and my full respect. Carry on and make it so. Wow thank you for that. I agree about a table that gives just the links directly to Folk Club websites. I am including it with the Concert Venues Table. So it is now called UK Website Links to Folk Club/Concert Venues Cheers Les |
