Subject: RE: BS: Why do we mudcat? From: bflat Date: 03 Oct 00 - 06:09 PM Because I love music and being around intelligent, helpful, thoughtful people. Because this is a terrific resource. Because I'm not an island. Because sometimes I actually feel like I know you. And, I like that. Thanks for being here, all of you. bflat |

Subject: RE: BS: Why do we mudcat? From: bbelle Date: 03 Oct 00 - 06:01 PM It's been said about a dozen times before: I came here for the music and I stayed because of the people. I have friends here, for whom I care very much, and since they don't live closeby, I meet them under the Mudcat Moon. And that's why there is BS. You can only sustain a friendship so long talking about the origin of a folksong. You gotta dip below the surface because that's how you get to know your friends. Damn! I'm a lucky woman. |
Subject: RE: BS: Why do we mudcat? From: Mbo Date: 03 Oct 00 - 05:59 PM Because they're my only friends, and we get to talk about music & other stuff! Did I mention that they RULE (even though they don't like my music!). --Mattador |
Subject: RE: BS: Why do we mudcat? From: Eric the Viking Date: 03 Oct 00 - 05:49 PM Because there ain't nothing like it in the world. Where even after the roughest day, or blackest hour you can ask, say, inform, listen, find out but most of all share. When you are high (NOT LIKE THAT!!-I mean happy) or low or just fair to middling, even when work is filling my almost every spare moment there is still time to log on. I might not log onto anything else, but I am always here at sometime-even if I've nothing to add, but just want to find out. It's just a great place to be with such an excellent bunch of people, even though we sometimes differ with each other. But that is not suprising when all humans are unique-just like Mudcat. Eric |
Subject: RE: BS: Why do we mudcat? From: Naemanson Date: 03 Oct 00 - 05:42 PM Morticia! You beat me to it. I wanted to say "I think therefore I Mudcat!" But all that has been said goes for me as well. I've been here for a few months (goodness it's been 6 months already!) and have enjoyed every minute I spend here. I have learned and grown (and groaned) with all the others. I have cursed flamers, fought the Taliban with Sergeant Kat, read the threads, asked questions and got answers. Long live the Mudcat! |
Subject: RE: BS: Why do we mudcat? From: Catrin Date: 03 Oct 00 - 05:30 PM What Sailor Dan said about what Dave said about what kat said about what spaw said........... |
Subject: RE: BS: Why do we mudcat? From: Morticia Date: 03 Oct 00 - 04:23 PM I think therefore I Mudcat......all of the above with bells on.....aside from which I get to snog all these great people....and cry on their shoulder....and ask their advice....and help out ( occasionally)....and write silly episodes to silly stories.....and feel part of a community of people I am proud to know. |

Subject: RE: BS: Why do we mudcat? From: paddymac Date: 03 Oct 00 - 04:02 PM A thousand "amens" to 'Spaw's brilliant post. |
Subject: RE: BS: Why do we mudcat? From: GUEST,Greyeyes Date: 03 Oct 00 - 03:56 PM I've posted on a number of different chat groups, most of them seem to degenerate into adolescent abuse very quickly. I came here originally looking for the lyrics to a song (which I found in the forum database in about 15 seconds) and stayed around as the level of the conversation and good manners was so obviously higher than anything I had come across before. It made me laugh, it made me think, it made me want to be part of it, so now I've joined. I have my reservations, but they are chiefly to do with the horribly addictive nature of the forum and my phone bill. |
Subject: RE: BS: Why do we mudcat? From: mousethief Date: 03 Oct 00 - 03:36 PM Because I'm interested in learning, hearing, and playing-and-singing folk music and blues, and because (most of) the people here have been wonderfully nice and supportive.

Subject: RE: BS: Why do we mudcat? From: Wesley S Date: 03 Oct 00 - 03:33 PM I'm obsessed with "roots" music. Blues, jugband, celtic, folk, gospel, bluegrass, oldtime, and all the others. People naturally want to hang out with people of similar interests - and this is where I find them. I learn a lot here about the music I love. And one or twice a week I'm reminded of a record in my collection that I haven't listened to in ages because of one of the conversations here. The folks here for the most part are well informed about a varity of subjects that I want to know more about. And , most of the folks I meet here are people I'd have over for dinner and a pickin' session if the distences allowed. Besides - I can't dance and it's too wet to plow. |
Subject: RE: BS: Why do we mudcat? From: MMario Date: 03 Oct 00 - 03:33 PM "I come here to be challenged and to learn. I come here to give what I can and to teach. I come here to laugh and to cry, to try to brighten another's day and have my own brightened. I come here to think, to rant and rave, to get angry, and to get good advice when life has blinded me to the truth. I come here for the companionship and I come for the music. " *Standing ovation* I hope someday to see that carved on a sign over the door to the MudCat Concert hall. |
Subject: RE: BS: Why do we mudcat? From: catspaw49 Date: 03 Oct 00 - 03:24 PM AND SKIFF....What would the Neil Young Center for the Terminally Screwed do without YOU? Spaw |
Subject: RE: BS: Why do we mudcat? From: GUEST,Roger the skiffler Date: 03 Oct 00 - 03:20 PM All of the above, also to ask naive questions, gain more musical knowledge and give an airing to some poor old jokes that don't otherwise get out much! And, providing I ignore some threads, it stops me from feeling ANGRY RtS |
Subject: RE: BS: Why do we mudcat? From: Ebbie Date: 03 Oct 00 - 03:20 PM Catspaw, thou art an eloquent man! And sooooo right. If I had to use one word to describe this site's importance to me, I would say 'Connection'. Connection to humanity in all its glory. Ebbie |
Subject: RE: BS: Why do we mudcat? From: catspaw49 Date: 03 Oct 00 - 03:13 PM Welcome to the 'Cat. We come here because of every reason you mention and myriad more. We come here because most of us never find this much intelligence, knowledge, caring, compassion, humor, and diversity anywhere in the 3-D world. I come here to be challenged and to learn. I come here to give what I can and to teach. I come here to laugh and to cry, to try to brighten another's day and have my own brightened. I come here to think, to rant and rave, to get angry, and to get good advice when life has blinded me to the truth. I come here for the companionship and I come for the music. I come here to listen to the depth of folk knowledge from Rick, to see the true compassion of kat, to see the wisdom of Art and Sandy, the bottomless heart of Mick, the brilliance of Peter, the poetry of Shambles, the exuberance of Joe Offer, the earthy beauty of WW, the talent and wicked intelligence of the Swans, the cool logic of Jeri, the mature innocense of Bonnie, the common sense and humor of Leej, the straight truths of Sinsull, the kindness and logic of Bill D.............and I could keep on listing these things into the hundreds. So many fine people in one place. And the true beauty is that for every attribute I give to one of the above, I could give to all of the above!!! Where else can you find this? I could list over a hundred 'Catters and tell you why I value each one. And even better? The place has a core group of denizens, but people come here every day and add to this wonderful mix.....and there's always room for another. I still go back to something Sandy Paton once said: "I always wanted to live somewhere like that." ............or maybe I'm just bored. Spaw |
Subject: RE: BS: Why do we mudcat? From: Roger in Sheffield Date: 03 Oct 00 - 03:04 PM To see the other points of view out there, to argue my corner and often lose, mainly there is nothing much on the TV or Radio right now and my Niamh Parsons CD hasn't arrived yet .....oh and to wish Kendall a speedy recovery Roger |
Subject: RE: BS: Why do we mudcat? From: Little Neophyte Date: 03 Oct 00 - 02:53 PM Beyond the endless music knowledge I gain from being involved in this group, I would say I mudcat because I am a Mudcatter. I feel part of this community and it means a great deal to me to share, support and hang-out with my Mudcat buddies. Bonnie |
Subject: Why do we mudcat? From: khandu Date: 03 Oct 00 - 02:45 PM There is the obvious reasons, lyric or music search, etc. But many threads (if not most) have little dealing with music. > We have the philosophers, the Spiritual, the good ole boys; people from every avenue. > We keep coming back, selectively responding to threads. Some for fun, some for needed help or advice. > I have seen real compassion for people we do not know. I have seen anger, impertinence, rudeness. I have seen good time humor. But why do YOU mudcat? I guess I do it for many reasons; to learn,to pass some time, but probably mostly for a sense of affirmation. Why do YOU? |
