Why do people hate Barney so much?

Since the "Barney & Friends: show focuses on pre-school age children, one reason that older children could have for rejecting Barney is to demonstrate that they are older and therefore are far beyond such childish programming.

But the viewer comments for YouTube videos such as this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZZivl5iKCo as well as the parodies of Barney's "I Love You" song on this discussion thread document that there's much more going on here than older children proving that they have outgrown Barney.

I admit that I actually read all of the 2,170 comments to date for that "I Love You" video.

What I find most troubling to me was that so many people who loved to hate Barney indicated that he is gay and/or that he is a pedophile. Unfortunately, it appears that a number of people making those assertions inaccurately still connect being homosexual with being a pedophile. In my opinion, these aseertions about Barney the dinosaur being gay and Barney the dinosaur being a pedophile being coupled with the "Let's kill Barney" meme can have very dangerous consequences. This is particularly worrisome in light of the increases in physical attacks on homosexuals and lesbians worldwide that have been reported for decades.

I'm not sure what if anything can be done about these Barney parodies and what if anything can be done about the venom directed towards Barney the purple dinosuar. Actually, I don't give a fig about the Barney character. My concern is directed to those who haters of Barney the dinosour might target in the real world.

For what it's worth, I strongly believe that people should be more aware of the possible implications and the possible consequences of this "I love to hate Barney the purple dinosaur" phenomenon.
