Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: Bee Date: 02 Mar 07 - 07:21 PM It's been bare ground for weeks here in NS, but about an hour ago came the first fine flakes, there's a two-cm. depth already, and we're expecting 10 to 20. Gonna be a surprise for kitty, he's never seen more than a couple cm. of snow. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: Beer Date: 02 Mar 07 - 07:14 PM So I take it your off to see David Francey this evening or tomorrow? Say hello to him for me. Beer (Adrien) |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: black walnut Date: 02 Mar 07 - 04:54 PM Went for a walk. Branches down, sidewalks blocked off, hydro running on generators hooked up to hydro poles, lots of water running in rivers down the roads and sidewalks, and still quite a lot of snow and slush around despite temperatures and a bit of sun which I thought should have melted it all away. I love winter! ~b.w. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: black walnut Date: 02 Mar 07 - 02:39 PM I was supposed to do a school concert this afternoon but that was cancelled. I've been spending my day beside a crackling fire. Bad weather ain't always so bad... ~b.w. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: gnu Date: 02 Mar 07 - 01:37 PM Gosh. Youse guys are getting it. NY and thereabout has been slammed. North of Moncton is crap. East is icy. Eastern NF is being continuously hammered. We are about to get 15 to 20cm and light winds with a temp rising to 5C tomorrow. So far this winter, I have spent about five hours at the snow clearing. Thanks to all of youse for keeping the poor weather away from us... so far. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: black walnut Date: 02 Mar 07 - 01:24 PM I'm staying put, don't worry. There's a David Francey CD release tomorrow night at Hugh's Room. Goderich sounds like a GREAT place to live, if you have enough food in the larder and wood on the pile. The wonders of being by ferocious Lake Huron! They told people here in Toronto to not go out of their houses today, but they kept the schools open. Go figure. ~b.w. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: Mooh Date: 02 Mar 07 - 10:53 AM b.w...Stay home, it's el crapola here. North of here there are 15 hydro poles broken off...and around here schools are closed, slush everywhere, plugged storm sewers, fallen branches caked with ice...it's above freezing now and quite wet but still very slippery. Sun came out a while ago so maybe there's hope. More snow to replace the freezing rain is expected, and it'll freeze overnight. Fun, eh! Peace, Mooh. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: black walnut Date: 02 Mar 07 - 10:10 AM Well, I asked for weather, and we got weather! freezing rain, rain, snow, sleet, yup Toronto got it alright. How's it in Goderich today, Mooh? ~b.w. |

Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: Stilly River Sage Date: 14 Feb 07 - 10:27 AM Hey, Little Hawk, some of your cold air leaked out and made it all the way to Texas. Damned cold out there the last couple of days--feels like it came straight off of the northern tundra. I don't have foxes in the yard, just a couple of chilly dogs who stay close to their hay-filled stall in the garage on days like this. SRS |

Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: black walnut Date: 13 Feb 07 - 02:30 PM Very inspirational poem. Right to the point. It's about time Toronto gets nailed. We've escaped like sneaky little convicts thus far. I've brought in a load of firewood. ~b.w. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: Mooh Date: 13 Feb 07 - 01:52 PM Last time the worst of it was north, this time it looks like it'll be south of us. Eventually we'll get nailed...we always do. Was recently emailed a lovely winter poem that went something like: Damn cold, Ain't it? Yup. Peace, Mooh. |

Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: black walnut Date: 05 Feb 07 - 09:08 PM 102? Yikes about the foxes in London UK. Eek. Hooray for cold and wind and snow in Ontario. It feels like how it SHOULD feel in February. ~b.w. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: Liz the Squeak Date: 05 Feb 07 - 04:45 PM 101!!! Explaination of urban foxes. Due to the decline in natural prey and the ease of foraging for scraps in bins, foxes are moving into city areas. We have, nearby, a thing called 'The Greenway' - a green corridor that used to run from the edge of the City of London, all the way to Tilbury Docks. It's the line of the overground section of the Northern Outfall Sewer, taking waste from the centre and east of London to the swerage treatment plants at Stratford and Tilbury, built in the 1860's. There is still a green corridor between Bow and Becton. Foxes move in from Epping Forest, Wanstead Flats and Hackney Marshes which is more their natural habitat, to inhabit this 'Greenway'. They keep the sewer rats down and supliment their diet with forgagings from local takeaway food outlets, rummaging in bin bags and gardens. It's not uncommon to see a fox trotting down the road early in the morning or hear one snuffling round the front garden at night. It'll be breeding season soon so we'll start to hear the vixens huffing (sort of like gruff barking) and the dog foxes yowling. LTS |

Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: Little Hawk Date: 04 Feb 07 - 07:23 PM I spent half my waking hours today engaged in the glorious pastime of snow removal. Oh, joy! These are the times when I don't have to be reminded what a blessing it is to be born a Canadian. ;-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: Mooh Date: 04 Feb 07 - 06:59 PM Bayfield. Winds off the lake will fill in the highway right behind the plough. This weather makes a person regard the world as a little more immediate. It's no wonder the elements figure so much in song, and reminds us of our mortality. Peace, Mooh. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: black walnut Date: 04 Feb 07 - 06:25 PM If your band practice is where I think it is, Mooh, then you'd better have stayed in. I'll bet that highway south was treacherous. ~b.w. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: Mooh Date: 04 Feb 07 - 01:21 PM Highway closures appear to be an on and off thing today. It was very white at the edge of town an hour ago (I went to look after church). Instead of toddling off to band practice, maybe an afternoon in the shop fixing guitars would be safer. Peace, Mooh. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: black walnut Date: 04 Feb 07 - 11:41 AM I love the severity sound of minus degrees in Celcius, Mooh. I mean, it is cold out there, but not as cold as if it was Farenheit. If you smile outside today at Yonge and Bloor your teeth will fall out. Liz...there's a London Ontario, too....for a minute there I thought you'd moved across the pond to join us in the colony! Rats. What are you doing with foxes in your area of town? Ours stay mostly in the ravines and cemeteries. ~b.w. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: Liz the Squeak Date: 03 Feb 07 - 11:34 PM We appear to have had a frost here in London. It's 4.30am and the streetlights outside show a car covered in spangles and a fox looking severely disgruntled. It was too cold for people to be out tonight so there are no chicken takeaway boxes around for it to forage in. LTS |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: Mooh Date: 03 Feb 07 - 06:29 PM Yup, occasional white-outs and -25 with the wind chill, only -15 otherwise. Had a short walk this afternoon, without the dogs, quite refreshing. Peace, Mooh. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: black walnut Date: 03 Feb 07 - 02:41 PM The groundhogs say spring is coming. But I don't believe it. We just fell into deep freeze. ~b.w. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: Charmion Date: 29 Jan 07 - 06:56 PM Ottawa is dark and flippin' frigid. I set off the burglar alarm coming in the door tonight because I couldn't push the teeny little buttons with my numb fingers, or see the little jaspers through my fogged-up spectacles. I'm tired of this sh!t already. Roll on spring. |

Nice to know where one of my great political opponents is located. ;-) I spent much time around Carlin, Nevada and Elko and that general area during 1977-1980. Had some friends there with common interests. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: number 6 Date: 29 Jan 07 - 12:59 PM It's friggin cold here. No snow, just a dreary cold and wind ... dry .... what I imagine Mongolia must be like. biLL |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: pdq Date: 29 Jan 07 - 12:57 PM For USers, -27 degrees Celsius = -16.6 degrees Fahrenheit.> Still rather nippy. Here in the sagebrush country of northern Nevada, it will be about 48F high and 18F low. Same as yesterday. That is precisely the seasonal normal for this date. Good time to start garden renovation. |

Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: gnu Date: 20 Jan 07 - 01:11 PM I did shovel, for about twenty minutes, so the doors would be operable. Especially the door to my garage, wherein I have a 13HP, 33" cut snowblower, fully gassed, all winter long. I can throw enough snow into the wind in a two foot distance to come back in my face for an easy ten seconds. Like I said... that'll wake ya up! |

We have a real estate lady already on the hunt. Little Hawk: Port Albert is a GREAT name for a weiner dog! Mine was called Herman. On snowy days we would roll him up in a piece of carpet with his nose sticking out of one end and his tail out the other....then put him on the sled and take him around the neighbourhood. He loved it, and it was a great conversation starter. ~b.w. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: *daylia* Date: 20 Jan 07 - 09:21 AM Yup it does. Good to be alive, it looks so pretty out there today! Comforting to see the snow at last -- life feels normal, at least. Now, c'mon shovel, lets get at 'er! |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: gnu Date: 20 Jan 07 - 09:13 AM The wind here is howlin and swirlin like a dog chasin it's tail... don't matter which way ya throw the snow, it comes right back in yer face. Wake ya up though!!! |
