Subject: RE: Sea Fever Sept Hull From: Paul_Schurr_PSG_NY Date: 05 Sep 07 - 01:04 PM Congratulations to Shanty Jack, organizers, volunteers, and performers who made the Hull festival a wonderful experience! It was well worth my long trip from Albany, NY. Like the Mystic Seaport Festival, the Hull festival was well organized, populated by great performances (oh, Sweet Minerva, god, what a song!) and filled with pub singing and organized sing-arounds. My special thanks to the Shellback Chorus for their songs and friendliness. You made me feel like part of the group, something I didnt merit as an amateur but surely appreciated. There was nothing in my past experiences like the last few songs in the Guildhall on Saturday night. The formal sing-around had ended. Then a few of us joined in on the Farewell Shanty. The Hissyfit women launched us into Grey Funnel Line with wonderful harmonies. We then gave Fathom the Bowl a go. As the harmonies added new colors to the air, we were ushered out of the room and into the hallway, where the chorus became richer as it reflected off the old walls. Then Hissyfit came back with Shallow Brown, and the small group of us harmonized down the hallway and out the door. The last chorus was finished on the curb outside the Guildhall, and you could feel that something very special had happened. What a time! I think everyone who attended the festival must have had moments like that. When you collect them all together, it makes our lives better. I hope I will sing with all of you here next spring. Gotta Get Gon (sponsored by the Pickin and Singin Gatherin folk club) happens the last weekend in May near Saratoga Springs, NY. The Mystic Seaport Shanty Festival happens in Mystic, CT on the second weekend in June. And the renowned Old Songs Festival happens the last weekend in June near Albany, NY. If you let me know you will be here, we will order the beer and organize a house sing and do it all again. |

Subject: RE: Sea Fever Sept Hull From: Les from Hull Date: 04 Sep 07 - 09:36 AM I think I've just about recovered by now from another smashing weekend. If there's a guitar player reading this who thinks he/she might have left something in the Minerva, contact the pub to learn something to your advantage. Or if you're far away, pm me and I'll help you sort it out. |
Subject: RE: Sea Fever Sept Hull From: danensis Date: 03 Sep 07 - 04:36 PM Yes, we're totally knackered after two days on our feet. Saturday was incredibly busy. Only problem for us it that the organisers had arranged back-to-back events on Syntan so there was little time to show people round. The French lot sounded wonderful, as did G&T, the only two acts I had time to listen to. I also got to look round Comrade, thanks to Keith, I must have a sail on her sometime, be a bit different to the barge I expect! Lookout for Shanty Singing on Beverley Beck next year - probably May Bank Holiday if Nev gets his way, John |
Subject: RE: Sea Fever Sept Hull From: Linda Kelly Date: 03 Sep 07 - 04:08 PM We did it on purpose Geoff -we like to see your sensitive side! great festival for us but I have the mother of all sore throats today!!! Saw the gorgeous frenchmen on Look North today Mrs Duck, we sneaked a few cuddles ourselves before they went. Great weather and plenty of things for the kids made it a fantastic weekend and I don't care what people say about Hull, in the sunshine down at the marina it looked like Monte Carlo (well Monte Carlo on a rubbish day maybe) Very tired today and full of sadness for our missing Shellback, but we will have very fond memories of the weekend. (Singing Sweet Minerva in the Minerva pub is always going to be a special moment for us) |
Subject: RE: Sea Fever Sept Hull From: old git Date: 03 Sep 07 - 08:43 AM another great weekend with some excellent singing!! I was doing fine till Sunday when bloody Hissyfit got me all choked up and blubbering by singing Sweet Minerva. I'd got myself sorted by the Survivors'session when they went and did it again!! Luckily there were a couple more "turns" before it was our turn to sing. The whole of that final "session" was a fitting end to a great festival. geoff t |

Subject: RE: Sea Fever Sept Hull From: Mrs.Duck Date: 02 Sep 07 - 12:07 PM Just returned home. Another wonderful weekend of Sea songs and Shanties from all over the world. Got to sing with les Souilles de Fond du Cales again (ok so I am a tart):0)Only downside was the dreadful news that Colin Kemp, long time member of Shellback Chorus, had died. The Chorus sang the Farewell Shanty for him before leaving Hull which I believe was where Colin had originally come from. |
Subject: RE: Sea Fever Sept Hull From: Cavia_P Date: 01 Sep 07 - 05:25 PM We all had such a good time last night at the welcome session in the New White Hart... So we have asked the landlady if we can run another songs, tunes, poems and stories session. She's very enthusiastic about it and is getting another barrel of XB, as we emptied the last one. The first session is next Friday (7th Sept 07) starting 8.30pm. The White Hart is a traditional pub on Alfred Gelder Street near Hull City centre. The pub has decent ale and good acoustics in the back room. There is good access with car parking and a main bus route right outside the frontdoor. If this meets the needs of folkies in the area then it has the potential to develop into a regular weekly session. Regards, Cavia_P & Glevum |

During the daytime there will be an informal concert on the side of Humber Dock from one of the traditional craft. There are usually singarounds in the Minerva, Green Bricks and Heritage pubs. Trade stalls etc are on Humber Dock Promenade. In previous years Maggie and I have organised an 'anti-shanty' on the Saturday night for anyone who doesn't want to go to the concert at the Guildhall. |
