Saltburn has got a lot of class as a place. All that faded gentility and big old houses, plus its a bit grubby, rather like Weymouth and Fleetwood - so nothing local costs very much.

As I stated earlier George, give them a chance. I called them this morning to get all this clarified and they assured me that there will be sessions, singarounds and dance all weekend. Too many people jumping the gun here. And I STILL insist that's it's one of the best value festivals this summer.

I prefer the Saltburn line-up myself... and not just because they booked me. It looks more approachable and participatory, while Pickering seems more the sit-back-and-listen kind. Horses for courses, that's all.

It's just a shame they left the guestlist so late.

It was ages ago when I was sent a form and asked if I wanted to trade. I am away all summer so I won't be - but the headliners were fixied at the point.

I wonder if they have got their marketing right. I haven't seen a lot about the festival.

If money is the criterion you could try the new Beverley Beck Shanty Festival which is free. I believe that the Beverley Barge Preservation Society have obtained some lottery funding so that they can book the artists and charge nothing to the customers. Methinks the thread about festivals surviving is being echoed here. Price will be a significant factor in the numbers attending - certainly next year as people look at the costs and the fare. With the expected economic climate, the "worth" of the event will motivate people or demotivate them. Acts that would have been tolerated or seen twice in a year when costs were more favourable will not be as tolerable.

I couldn't possibly comment on the merits of Yorkshire festivals - even Beverley must have changed since I was going regularly. But it looks like festivals are peaking. Changing - for sure. Remember when Glastonbury called itself a Folk Festival? (and Trowbridge for that matter)

No -but a lot of campsites will be quieter this year due to the lack of Col K's snoring!

I think a choice of festivals is a personal thing - do you like greenfield sites or do you like a wider variety of 'different' venues?

Personally I'm choosing Saltburn - good guest line-up, variety of venues, established festival, slightly cheaper,pub sessions to play in, oh, and the beach to wander on if I get 'festival overload'. Plus less chance of the hayfever really playing up.

However I can see how some people would prefer Pickering. It's just a shame they left the guestlist so late.

I stayed in a B & B once at Bromyard FF - that's not the same either. There is nothing quite like camping on a festival site.

Try Sidmouth. A great place to be and you'll save even more on a ticket by not buying one. Camp out of town on a permanent site. There's buses. (But I still find I'm at the cash machine every day).

As I've said on the discussion about this on the other festival site, I think Pickering looks excellent value for money, especially when compared to Cambridge plus petrol. I probably wouldn't be going to Saltburn but will almost definitely be going to Pickering - we'll see what it's like.

Eire for two Leeds/Bradford airport - last time, late last year, was £42 LBA/ Dublin return for both of us.
Decent B & B in Dun Laoghaire were 30 Euros a night.
We have been on this trip a few times 'cos Eileen's Mum is in a care home just down the road from Dun Laoghaire.

180 miles driving at 40 mpg would cost 4.5 gallons at £5.00+ per gallon.

I'd say the savings are marginal.

And of course Saltburn is smaller - I was trying to be nice.

I've never had a "season ticket" for an entire festival -- I just pick and chose what I want to go to. Plus you're only 45 miles away from the venue -- why not commute rather than camp? (Even though I realise you might be calling on your non-drinking good lady to do the driving home).

Go to a couple of concerts and just hang out the rest of the time. You might have a better time of it anyway.

(This said, there's no way on god's clean earth that me and the other ½ would pay £130 for a weekend's entertainment before booze costs were taken into account).

Saltburn.....a BIT smaller Dave? Are you serious? My guess, looking at the Pickering line-up is that they probably spent more on their three headliners than Saltburn spent on their entire festival. If we're going to debate these things, let's be realistic about it.

Saltburn Festival which I would guess is a bit smaller, with fewer artists and is held at the same time is slightly less expensive for tickets £45 for early bookers (or £54 after May) for an adult and slightly dearer (£12.00 instead of £10.00 for camping).

Shrewsbury which is a couple of weeks later is a lot dearer but with a lot more artists and over four days. Camping there is £12.00.

Shepley is more or less the same price.

Therefore the price at Pickering seems about about right - within a pound or two for that festival. Given the artists that are there, what do you think a fair price would be?

However I am really interested how you can do a weekend in Eire for two for £130.00.

Would you be kind enough to tell me how you do that?

I've just checked the prices for the Pickering Folk Festival,about 45 miles from home, sounded good, I read on..... the way I read it, it'll cost my wife and I, £130 for two of us for the weekend,before camping and my beer (Eileen doesn't drink).
That's just daft, we are pensioners, get real. We can go to Eire for the weekend for that price... you lost us. Organisers, please note.
Any other 'Catters have a comment?
