Subject: RE: Radio 4 UK Now Rebetika, Greek Blues From: Piers Plowman Date: 17 Jul 08 - 01:00 PM Warning: Rant Alert! I love rembetika, but I wish people, especially broadcasters and the people who write liner notes for CDs, would stop referring to every type of music and its uncle as "blues". "Blues" is "blues"; other genre's of music can be good without necessarily being called "Turkish blues" or "Moravian blues" or "Tierra del Fuegan blues". |

Subject: RE: Radio 4 UK Now Rebetika, Greek Blues From: GUEST Date: 09 Jul 08 - 04:07 PM This is fascinating too, I thought I'd never heard of her but now keep finding I do have single tracks by her on different rebetika compilations and she's terrific. The radio show was very good, just listened on the BBC Player. |
Subject: RE: Radio 4 UK Now Rebetika, Greek Blues From: fat B****rd Date: 09 Jul 08 - 03:52 PM Great stuff ! On holiday in Crete some years ago I asked the host/bouzouki player at the nearest taverna about Rembetika - I heard about it from Ann and Ken at Red Lick Records - he was amaxed that anybody from England had heard about it and changed his repertoire that night, regardless of tourist requests, "Everything now is from the 20s and 30s" he yelled. Great night. On a trip further up the coast I went into a Cd shop and made enquiries. The pretty shop asistant seemed unsure so I asked for hashish smoking music and she actually reached under the counter and sold me two cd collections. After reading this I shall be playing them again. Great thread and good radio programme. Hopa !! |

LB'sK, the first site is gorgeous, but the second one gave me all those wonderful MP3s... George Dalaras is my favourite male voice. Anywhere. Any time. Subject: RE: Radio 4 UK Now Rebetika, Greek Blues From: GUEST,Ravenheart Date: 08 Jul 08 - 04:23 PM Dalgas is a wonderfully powerful singer. I have a collection of his music (and a few others') on the English Heritage label. They worked from the original metal stampers instead of some worn acetate disks, and the results sound really good. |

Subject: The Greek Blues From: Emma B Date: 08 Jul 08 - 09:00 AM On BBC radio 4 now - and available on listen again 'Rock critic Peter Paphides goes back to Athens, the city where his parents grew up, to chart the history and roots of Rembetika, the Greek blues. Played on violins, ouds and bouzoukis and featuring extremely impassioned singing, Rembetika is the music of the lower classes in Greece and Asia Minor. Typical lyrics are concerned with lost love, impending death, hashish, sex, prison and gambling.' Music Feature |
