One of the posts above speaks warmly about Cakewalk Express Gold. This programme was given away free in 1999 by Computer Music magazine, which included an article on how to use it. The magazine keeps back copies of old issues which can be ordered individually, although popular ones eventually sell out. It's worth a try if you are looking for free software. For reference, it came with Issue 14.
If you are stuck, I still have the issue and the disk (which I have loaded on to my machine). But that means you would have to give me an address on PM, which understandably many people would be reluctant to do. I am in UK.

Whatever you use elsewhere in the system, the best tip is to get the best quality mic or mics you can afford - get the sound right at source and you don't need to do much else other than capture it.

If the budget extends to it, try two mics on a guitar - you can get some really good results by spending time getting good mic positioning.

Also, any book on teh topic by Paul White is worth reading!

I have access to wavelab and acid, but find it hard to do simple recording with all these options. I'm slow, and using Acid was stumped at little things like how to record without their drum track and keyboard stuff. Turned them off. Then figured out if I opened a new file, they dropped out.
   It's funny, but back in the 70's to have thought I could have stuff like this to use! but now it seems like a headache. Now I also need a dude to do it for me. Guess I'll get my kids to play with it, and they'll figure it out.

Any tips on simple straight acoustic recordings with these thangs?

Now here's a subject close to my heart. I love my studio! I'm running two 400 P2s, one with 13.6 gigs and a backup with 10.6 gigs. Mackie 1402(I just this week upgraded to the pro from the standard vlz) boards. My interface is a Gina card running a two in /eight out configuration. I'm using the AKG 3000C large diaphragm mics into an A.R.T. 12ax7 tube pre-amp to warm everything up! I'm adding two Eight channel a-dats at the end of summer with the support hardware. Monitors are Technics SB-f1 series out of a 150 watt digital amp. My favorite software for recording myself is the new Cool Edit Pro. I drop the whole thing down into Sound Forge for editing and burn through CD Architect and WALLAH! Groovy music....Oh yeah, one burner is a Mitsumi, the other is a HP. Last week I released my first CD..You Can't Get A Drink At The Sandbar on my own lable ( Groovin' Sandpiper Music )and so far it's been a great success. I like the results better than anything I've done in pro studios and I love the option of playing all the instruments and singing all the parts myself. The full retail version of Creative Labs Soundblaster LIVE card comes with a version of Cakewalk Gold Express. It's basically a limited version of Cakewalk Pro. It also comes with limited versions of a few other programs that capture to .WAV and process/edit, maybe Soundforge? Anyway, with Cakewalk you get 8 tracks of 44khz digital audio, either 256 or 512 (I forget) tracks of digital midi, full sheet score printing with chords and lyrics, and I forget what all else since those are the features I mostly use. The bi/directional midi controls my Yamaha keyboard or works quite well all by itself. The SPDIF input could plug direct to my Lexicon MPX 100 if I wanted effects to run that way, but in fact I am not concerned with or capable of providing a full digital path so I usually plug mikes, instruments, etc direct to a Mackie mixer and run the bus outputs to the analog inputs on the SBLive. I suppose you could lay down two tracks at a time by panning full left and right but I haven't tried it, preferring to lay down a track at a time and mix down. I use a Tyan Turbo Titan MB with K6-200, 64 megs RAM and a 5400 RPM Maxtor IDE Ultra33 drive. This equipment should be considered the absolute bare minimum for this sort of application, in fact more than a few will tell you it can't be done at 44khz CD quality at that level of equipment. It works here but I'd rather run at 400 Mhz with a 7k RPM drive. And SCSI would be nice. And how about $299 for the Cakewalk Pro full release with 64 tracks of audio, or the deluxe version with unlimited tracks... got a few grand I can borrow?

You can spend a LOT of money for multiple A/D conversion channels going into a PC. The SB Live gives you just a couple but they work and are inexpensive. If you decide to try this be sure to get the full retail version as the "value" version won't contain the software or daughtercard.

G'day,
I have a recording setup using a 200 MHz pentium system. You needs lots of hard disc space, I have 2 8.6 Gig drives. A faster CPU would be even better. The multi track software I use is Cool Edit Pro. There's a shareware version which you can download from www.syntrillium.com. It's not to everybody's taste but it is very powerful. Less powerful in some ways but easier to use would be one of the Cakewalk packages or Logic Audio from Emagic. Watch out for extremely annoying copy protection schemes. Then there's Cubase or Wavelab from Steinberg, depends what you want to pay. Sonic Foundry's Acid uses loops & grooves and is probably more suited to rap.

I use two sound cards, both of which are external units to reduce interference from within the PC case. One is a Roland UA-100 - very nice with lots of effects but only two simultaneous external inputs. The other is an ISIS which does nothing fancy but does have eight simultaneous inputs. They complement each other very nicely. I expect that more CPU power would allow me to use all ten inputs simultaneously. Maybe next year.

I play a variety of instruments and have always wanted to record a track with all the instruments played by myself. Has anyone tried this, and what is the best softwear to use? Any free samples of softwear i've tried seemed geared to making 'Rap' tracks!
