Subject: RE: CPR - Staying Alive (Bee Gees) From: Nick Date: 28 Oct 08 - 04:57 PM I haven't heard the song for years but timed myself for a minute counting along to it playing in my head. 104 or 105. Amazing how that speed has stuck for so many years. Try it. |
Subject: RE: CPR - Staying Alive (Bee Gees) From: katlaughing Date: 28 Oct 08 - 04:11 PM As they said on NPR, just don't tell the EMTs to use "Flight of the Bumblebee!" This is useful. If they'd figured this out in 1976 when I got my EMT training, it might have also been contemporary.:-) |
Subject: RE: BS: CPR - Staying Alive (Bee Gees) From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 28 Oct 08 - 10:56 AM I suppose it depends on which side of the Atlantic you are, If I need resuscitating I think I'd prefer to have Nellie the Elephant running through the mind of my rescuer. Here's a fairground organ playing the tune. And here's the version that was a big British hit many years ago, with the words. An Animal Liberation anthem... But surely this thread should be up in the music section. |

Subject: RE: BS: CPR - Staying Alive (Bee Gees) From: WFDU - Ron Olesko Date: 28 Oct 08 - 10:48 AM considering how many people were sickened by the Bee Gees music, it is fitting that one of their songs does some good. |
Subject: RE: BS: CPR - Staying Alive (Bee Gees) From: wysiwyg Date: 28 Oct 08 - 10:47 AM Yes, a lifeguard was all excited about this last week. It's just good to have certain earworms, is the idea. Calms the rescuer. Can be easily transmitted over the phone by 911 dispatchers, etc. Me, I prefer "Spirit in the Sky." ~S~ |
Subject: RE: BS: CPR - Staying Alive (Bee Gees) From: GUEST,Elfcall Date: 28 Oct 08 - 10:42 AM McGrath - when I did a StJA first aid course about 3 years ago - the recommended tune was indeed Nellie the Elephant - with the same advice of not singing it aloud. Elf |
Subject: RE: BS: CPR - Staying Alive (Bee Gees) From: GUEST,Rapunzel Date: 28 Oct 08 - 08:36 AM I had my annual update training a couple of months ago and they are still advocating Nelly the Elephant. I have used this for real (but never out loud!) and it does work. |
Subject: RE: BS: CPR - Staying Alive (Bee Gees) From: Ron Davies Date: 28 Oct 08 - 08:31 AM I saw an article on this. They pointed out that other songs with the same number of beats could be used, but were not picked. The one cited as not picked was "Another One Bites the Dust". |
Subject: RE: BS: CPR - Staying Alive (Bee Gees) From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 27 Oct 08 - 11:16 PM So what music is best for pushing distended hemmorhoids back into someone's ass? |
Subject: RE: BS: CPR - Staying Alive (Bee Gees) From: Stilly River Sage Date: 27 Oct 08 - 10:14 PM Since I've never heard of Nelly the Elephant, I fear my patient would die. I can easily kick in an earworm of "Staying Alive" and do CPR, so perhaps we'd better keep the songs to the appropriate continents. Setting aside feigned musical prejudice, it's a very clever way to teach the process, is easy to remember, and easy to set into motion. Clearly music is a motivating factor and ties in with your understanding of what needs to be done. It takes the act of practicing on Rescussy Annie from being a kind of random set of compressions of varying speeds to something you can really keep track of. Just so you use the Bee Gees' version. If Tony Bennett ever recorded the song you might have too slow a pace. :) SRS |

Subject: RE: BS: CPR - Staying Alive (Bee Gees) From: gnu Date: 27 Oct 08 - 06:20 PM jeefp.... "It could make the difference between life or death." Disco... that's a hard choice. |
Subject: RE: BS: CPR - Staying Alive (Bee Gees) From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 27 Oct 08 - 06:11 PM I believe the tune that is generally recommended in the UK as a help in resuscitation is the chorus of Nelly the Elephant. But I gather people are advised it is best not to sing it aloud while applying the procedure. Anyway it's a much better tune, and easier to remember. |
Subject: RE: BS: CPR - Staying Alive (Bee Gees) From: jeffp Date: 27 Oct 08 - 05:15 PM Finally! A use for Disco! I'm glad, actually, that there is an easy benchmark to guide by. It could make the difference between life or death. |
Subject: BS: CPR - Staying Alive (Bee Gees) From: Stilly River Sage Date: 27 Oct 08 - 05:10 PM I heard it first on Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me! (NPR over the weekend) but it bears repeating: This from Bloomberg: Disco Rhythm From Bee Gee Days Helps Heart Victims Stay Alive link Oct. 15 (Bloomberg) -- A dose of Saturday Night Fever might help mend a broken heart. The Bee Gees' disco anthem ``Stayin' Alive'' from 1977 has 103 beats a minute, close to the number of chest compressions needed for cardiopulmonary resuscitation to work, according to a study at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria. Students who listened to the tune while practicing CPR on a dummy learned to give the right number of pumps, an abstract of the research in the Annals of Emergency Medicine said. The rhythm stayed in their heads. Five weeks later, the participants delivered compressions at 113 beats a minute, still an acceptable range. Ten doctors and five medical students took part in the experiment. "This was a small study, but the results are encouraging enough that a further study, using a larger and more diverse population, is warranted," said David Matlock, one of the researchers, in a statement distributed by the American College of Emergency Physicians. The results will be presented at a meeting of the Dallas-based group later this month, in Chicago. SRS |
