Subject: RE: Obit: Richard Wastling (24 Dec 2008) From: The DeanMeister Date: 05 Jan 09 - 04:15 AM I was too upset to write anything on this last week, and didn't have a clue what to say. Richard was a huge influence on me, and became a good friend. I made my first tentative outing to the White Horse Folk club about 15 years ago, having never played my guitar outside my bedroom, and having no knowledge of folk music. Richard made me feel welcome (along with the other regulars), and he effectively became my mentor, teaching me different tunings to work with, steering me to listen to Nick Jones, Dave Burland, and assorted others that had influenced him over the years. He taught me how to accompany tunes in a sensible fashion. Without him I would not have ventured to other folk clubs, or met all the musicians and friends I have over the years. Freewheeling would never have happened, Punch The Horse, and indeed my current band Viagra Falls who I met originally at a Sun Inn Session at the Beverley Folk Festival. In short, I would still be Billy no Mates in my bedroom. I feel I have Richard to personally thank for all of this, and for being possibly the kindest, gentlest, and most entertaining friend I have ever met. Thank you, Richard Wastling. You will be very sorely missed by me, and by the many other people whose lives you have touched over the years, not least Jean and Lisa, who I hope to keep in touch with. I'll be there for that great session in the sky. You get first song. Pete Dean. |

You stopped them Cold playing the various guitars at Danny's Music store here you had a pocket full of musical pics. Jean it was such fun and such a pleasure, adventure. Come back to Texas. We love you, with so many fond memories of Beverley, and Lisa we welcome Lee. Take care of each other. God Bless and peace this New Years Eve. Judy and Noel |

Subject: RE: Obit: Richard Wastling (24 Dec 2008) From: GUEST,Steve Tilston Date: 31 Dec 08 - 10:27 AM Very sad news indeed, he was a man I always looked forward to seeing whenever I played Beverley. We had a bit of a tradition going in that whenever I did the Slipjigs&Reels, he would join me on guitar, the last time was June, he was a bit disconcerted that I hadn't told him earlier that I'd changed the key, but he coped admirably - I shall miss him. Love And best wishes to Jean and Lisa. |

I'll miss him, and I hardly knew him really, other than as a regular at the old White Horse club. My thoughts are with Jean and Lisa, and all the many people who were lucky enough to have their lives touched by Richard. Congratulations to Lisa, too -- whoever he is, he's fortunate to be joining such a great family. All the best, Nigel |

Subject: RE: Obit: Richard Wastling (24 Dec 2008) From: GUEST,Ben Jackson Date: 30 Dec 08 - 08:03 AM Very, very sad to hear the news. I haven't made it to the club recently, but warmly remember my times there, and particularly the warmth and friendship of Richard and Jean. They are truly some of my favourite people. Personally one of my favourite songs he did was "Her father didn't like me anyway", and I always looked forward to all of his performances, and indeed just chatting with him. He will be sadly missed. My deepest sympathy to Jean and Lisa, and all his friends who have had the pleasure of knowing him a lot longer than me. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Richard Wastling (24 Dec 2008) From: old git Date: 30 Dec 08 - 05:30 AM I'm with Steve on Franklin, and Lloyd George. Rich was always generous with his time and his knowledge and taught me a lot of songs which I still sing. Of course ,in the folk club unwritten rules of those days,I didn't sing any of them at Beverley because they were "his" songs....though I remember that whoever was first on in the evening managed to snaffle "The Recruited Collier" These days I can't sing "Rose of Allandale" without thinking of him. geoff t |

Subject: RE: Obit: Richard Wastling (24 Dec 2008) From: Rubie Date: 29 Dec 08 - 05:20 AM Richard meant so much to us all - at the Folk Club, in our Ceilidh Band and at the Folk Festival as well. He was one of my longest term friends. I knew him all the time I have been in East Yorkshire and we were always in touch re one thing or another. I will miss him a great deal. We will hold a Special place for him in the 2009 folk festival. We had only been discussing a few days before how to incorporate the folk club more - now we have an even greater reason to do so. Let's work on it so that his memory lives on in the festival that he was so important in creating and helping to thrive. Chris |

Subject: Richard Wastling in Hospital From: GUEST,Pete Fletcher Date: 20 Dec 08 - 03:42 PM Those of you who know Richard will remember that he was unwell last year just before Christmas. Earlier this week he was again admitted to hospital with increasingly severe symptoms. It turns out that cancer has spread from in his kidneys to his liver and lungs. His condition is not operable but they are giving him dialasis. His life expectancy is now measured in days or weeks - a few months at the outside. I'm sorry to have to pass this news on but Richard has asked me to let people know. He is staying fairly positive given the circumstances. He is in Ward 5 at Hull Royal Infirmary at the moment. |
