Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Nobody's Darling But Mine (Jimmie Davis) From: GUEST,don moores Date: 12 Feb 07 - 01:45 PM I realize this is an old thread, but maybe someone new will be looking at it. I have a recording of Uncle Dave Macon singing a bit of Nobody's Darling But Mine to the tune Jimmy Davis used, but slightly different lyrics. I've often suspected that the song may have predated JD's version. |
Subject: Lyr Add: NOBODY'S DARLING BUT MINE From: Jim Dixon Date: 16 Nov 02 - 03:54 PM DougR: I love stories like that, that tell why a certain song has a special meaning for somebody. You needn't apologize. I don't consider it "thread creep" at all. This isn't the same song, but maybe it inspired Jimmie Davis: Transcribed from the sheet music at: The Lester S. Levy Collection of Sheet Music: (And if you like old sheet-music cover artwork, don't fail to look at this one.) NOBODY'S DARLING BUT MINE (Words, John T. Rutledge. Music, H. P. Danks. Published 1876.) 1. Nobody's darling but mine, love, Nobody loves you like me. In your bright eyes softly shine, love, Visions delightful to see, Visions of beauty and pleasure, Filling my heart with their love, Bringing me joys without measure, Beaming like bright stars above. CHORUS: Nobody loves you like me, love. Fondly and truly I'm thine. Promise you ever will be, love, Nobody's darling but mine. 2. Nobody's darling but mine, love, Truly I love you the best. While your sweet arms 'round me twine, love, Earth is a haven of rest. Lonely I'd be, love, without you, And all the joys that you give. Surely I never could doubt you, Pride of my heart while I live. 3. Nobody's darling but mine, love, Surely I love you alone. And my heart ever will pine, love, 'Till I may call you my own. Beautiful faily [sic; s/b "fairy"?] like vision, Bright star of hope, softly shine. Make my path one bright elysian, Nobody's darling but mine. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Be nobodys darling but mine From: DougR Date: 12 Nov 02 - 10:24 PM I hope you folks will excuse a bit of thread creep, but this song is very special to me, and I'm going to take a chance. Back in the 1960's I booked Eddy Arnold to appear in a Pop Concert with the Phoenix Symphony. My wife and I picked Eddy up at the airport and we made small talk on the way to his hotel. We had attended the Phoenix Jaycee's Rodeo a few months prior, and Jimmy Dean was the guest artist at the rodeo. He sang "Be Nobody's Darling," which I knew from the thirties, but was new to Velma. She asked Eddy on the ride back from the airport if he had considered recording that song. He said, "No, but it's a great old song." Several months later, Eddy released a LP and it had that song on it. Velma was shopping at KMart perusing the LP records, and found it. She called me at my office and said, "Guess what?" She died several years later absolutely convinced that she was responsible for his recording "Be Nobody's Darling" on that LP. Bill Walker arranged Eddy's rendition of the song, and I think it is excellent. Sorry for the invasion of what should be just a music thread. DougR |

Subject: Lyr Add: BY THE GRAVE OF NOBODY'S DARLING From: GUEST,Uncle Jaque Date: 01 Jul 02 - 12:03 AM I just resurrected this thread when it turned up on a search for the title, but the lyrics posted here are not what I was looking for. Yesterday Aunt Martha and I went out "Antiquing" around local flea markets and junque shops in search of an air compressor and an "Indian Pump", neither of which we found. well, this one antique joint had a beaut of a brass Indian Pump out on the porch, but the old man wanted it to go with his pet antique fire engine and wasn't parting with it. All I got was an old tattered guitar instructionh manual with the cover missing, which by the looks of it I'd guess was published sometime in the 1920's or '30's. And I paid a whole buck for it to boot. But the most interesting part was when I discovered a small piece of paper in between the pages upon which was handwritten in pencil a poem or set of lyrics, entitled "By The Grave Of Nobody's Darling", which were sadly evocative. I can't help but wonder if this is a transcription of a popular song which the writer was trying to learn to play, or an original composition by an unknown Author who was using the guitar book to try and work out a melody for it. So here it is; please let me know if anyone has ever heard of it and knows anything about it. it seems to fit into the "Old Country" or "Bluegrass" genre about as well as any, I reckon.
"BY THE GRAVE OF NOBODY'S DARLING"
(Found in an old - estimated circa 1920's - guitar manual handwritten in pencil on an 8 1/2" X 5 1/2" piece of newsprint paper.
Tonight as I kneel by my darling
(Chorus):
Each night while the bright moon is shining; (Cho.)

Subject: RE: Be nobodys darling but mine lyrics wanted From: Joe Offer Date: 22 Jul 99 - 02:46 AM Ah, but HTML is good for the humility..... Making HTML tags so they display is even harder. the right bracket > that I goofed up is > (and making the examples I put in this message is even more difficult. I can fix ordinary HTML very easily with my "edit" button, but I have to swallow my pride and leave the display mistakes alone - they're just too darn complex to do over. -Joe Offer, not quite infallible- |

Subject: Line Breaks From: Joe Offer Date: 22 Jul 99 - 02:24 AM Ray, I don't know how Cowpie and Lyrics World can display text with carriage returns, without adding those <br> line breaks. I know they use the <pre> <pre> commands to get monospaced letters so chords line up right, but we still have to use line breaks here, even when we use the <pre> command. I think the deal is that Max set us up for HTML because it give us the ability to be creative once we learn HTML - and you'll notice that our messages look musch nicer here than they do just about anywhere else. Bu yes, you always have to use line breaks <brt; here in the forum. And don't go claiming any speed records unless your HTML is correct! (grin) -Joe Offer- |

Sometimes we still amaze each other with what can be found. You'll find many helpful folk around here, like Joe fixing the line breaks for me. Some have been here a long time and some a relatively short time. Look around, enjoy, and again....Welcome! |

That always was one of my favorites....Whoops, looks like Mr Joe had ta bail me out yet again! Thanks Joe.....But now answer me a question....On Cowpie those lyrics are as you made them. Why did it not copy and paste as it was showing on the Cowpie? Should I have just automatically added linebreaks even though it appeared correct? |
