Subject: RE: Spot the Whitby Concertina Player From: Mo the caller Date: 31 Jul 12 - 12:54 PM It's a Welsh tune. I think the word means Clover. I cant find it online. Ah yes it is also called Sir Watkins Delight and you can hear it played on a harp here (with variations) |
Subject: RE: Spot the Whitby Concertina Player From: Jack Campin Date: 31 Jul 12 - 12:13 PM What's "Mellionen"? Does it have another name? (Spot, I have just dug out the French waltzes you sent me - here goes...) |

Subject: RE: Spot the Whitby Concertina Player From: TheSnail Date: 29 Aug 10 - 06:52 PM Yes, we were delighted to have Ann at the Stakwsby session and at osme of our parts playing workshops. A lovely lady and a lovely player. Bryan (Spare Parts Concertina Band) |
Subject: RE: Spot the Whitby Concertina Player From: Mo the caller Date: 29 Aug 10 - 09:31 AM I might have played Mellionen in that session (it's the tune that's most in my head at the moment) |
Subject: RE: Spot the Whitby Concertina Player From: Mo the caller Date: 29 Aug 10 - 09:30 AM I was at the session not the concertina workshop, I play a descant recorder, but I was sitting between 2 concertina players, husband Jim with an Anglo, daughter Rachel with an English. We met Spare Parts at Chippenham a few years ago running a 'learn some session tunes' workshop. It was (and still is) run very well, and just what we needed at the time. |
Subject: RE: Spot the Whitby Concertina Player From: Ann N Date: 29 Aug 10 - 09:14 AM Les, If you're in Whitby for next year's WFF you can buy me a pot of tea in the Station and I'll play 'David of the White Rock' for you :) What system of concertina do you have Mo? Cheers Ann |
Subject: RE: Spot the Whitby Concertina Player From: GUEST,Les from Darlo Date: 29 Aug 10 - 02:49 AM Still in Glasgow, my Mam's coming on well, a few more weeks and she'll be able send me home. Thanks everyone for the 'spotting' and I'll hope to get to WFF next year to hear Ann playing. Les |
Subject: RE: Spot the Whitby Concertina Player From: Mo the caller Date: 28 Aug 10 - 06:59 PM Ah, Now I know one Muddie by face as well as by mudname. I heard Davi of the White Rock in the Stakesby at the Spare Parts session. Now did I see Les anywhere? |

Subject: RE: Spot the Whitby Concertina Player From: GUEST,Alf Date: 24 Aug 10 - 02:51 AM Les, 'Spotted!' Saw Ann yesterday afternoon as she was going back home to say goodbye to her guests. Passed on your compliments and mine. There was a rather damp SPOT badge on the bag holding the concertina case :) Hope your Mum's getting better Alf (still drying out after the deluge) |
Subject: RE: Spot the Whitby Concertina Player From: Ann N Date: 22 Aug 10 - 02:49 AM Found the thread :) Yes that sounds like me :D Thanks for the compliments Les, Raggytash et al and apologies for the poor playing last night. By the end of yesterday the steady flow of strangers greeting me with 'hello Whitby Lady' had made me a tad nervous and at the FILO when Angie said there was a thread here asking about me that doubled the nerves. Will try to play better for the rest of Folk Week. Cheers Ann |
Subject: RE: Spot the Whitby Concertina Player From: GUEST,Alf Date: 19 Aug 10 - 03:04 AM Les, sorry to hear about your mum. Thanks to the posters above for providing a name, and if I see the no longer anonymous 'Whitby Lady' I'll pass on your compliments.... and mine. Those 10 minutes she kindly spent showing me how to play a simple tune on the concertina really boosted my confidence, I've not gone on to play one but, I have started to learn French, which along with music, was another subject the teachers told me I was hopeless at 50 years ago at school. Alf (busy packing ready for WFF ) |

Subject: RE: Spot the Whitby Concertina Player From: Wyrd Sister Date: 18 Aug 10 - 07:31 AM Yup I thought of Ann straight away. There couldn't be two like that could there? Think I'll take to calling her "Whitby Lady" now! |
Subject: RE: Spot the Whitby Concertina Player From: Raggytash Date: 17 Aug 10 - 05:00 PM Sounds very much like Ann, wife of the late Stuart, she is a superb player, I will pass on your regards. |

Subject: Spot the Whitby Concertina Player From: GUEST,Les from Darlo Date: 17 Aug 10 - 02:54 PM Rather than refresh the old 'Best of Uk Concertina Players' thread I've started this new one :) My mam's broken a hip and I'm looking after her up in Glasgow so WFF is off my calender this year, but if the 'Whitby Lady' is spotted could someone tell her how much I enjoyed her playing and I'll try to get to listen to her next year. To summarise the description from the older thread:- Probably lives in Whitby and has a husband in poor health. Plays an Anglo (Dipper), plump, about 5' tall with greying hair up in a bun, not dressed like a Folkie. Can play styles of music from Playford to Music Hall and Tango. Does a beautiful 'David of the White Rock' and has a Discworld 'Guild of Assassins' badge on the concertina case :) Thanks Les (temp Glasgow ) |
