Subject: RE: Tune Req: R Hood & W Stutly - Child 141 From: Mick Pearce (MCP) Date: 23 Apr 12 - 08:01 PM No others in Bronson, who btw doesn't hold much with the idea the RH&QK tune was used for it, citing the fact that the extant patterns of RH&QK would not fit RHrWS patterns. (The Three Ravens tune was assigned to RH&QK by one author on the basis of a down-a-down refrain, but Bronson dismisses that idea too; as Steve says Bronson gives no tunes for RH&QK). Mick |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: R Hood & W Stutly - Child 141 From: GUEST Date: 23 Apr 12 - 02:58 PM Hi Vic, Bronson wouldn't be a great help to you on RH ballads. Very few of them have evidence of oral tradition. The whole lot 40 0dd ballads fit into just 57 pages and not a lot of that is actually tunes. There is no tune for RH&QK but he does give one American tune for RH rescuing WS which comes ultimately from Scottish tradition. I could scan it for you if you pm me your email. I get your monthly digest but I don't think I've got your email in my contact list. |
Subject: Tune Req: R Hood & W Stutly - Child 141 From: Vic Smith Date: 23 Apr 12 - 02:31 PM I am trying to find a tune for the ballad that is sometimes called Robin Hood and Will Stuckley though F.J. Child called it Robin Hood rescuing Will Stutly and gives in the number 141. The surname is spelled differently in a number of ballad books and some suggest that this is another name for Will Scarlet. Some ballad books say that this is sung to the tune of Robin Hood and Queen Katherine but that is not a lot of help to me. I expect that there is a tune in Bronson but I am afraid that I do not have access to that. Can anyone help? |
