You can see the original sheet music for ST LOUIS TICKLE at the University of Mississippi Libraries web site:

Description here.

PDF here

The sheet music says it is written by "Barney & Seymour"; the catalog entry says Barney & Seymour is a pseudonym for Theron Catlan Bennett (1879-1937).

(Chicago: Harold Rossiter Music Co. , 1904)

The sheet music has no words, despite what the catalog entry says.

I recall seeing a book called The Folk Singer's Guitar Guide, Volume II (I think) that had a guitar version of St Louis Tickle with an independent walking bass line. I wonder if anyone has a copy of that tablature. Thanks for any help I get.

I think I've got it on an Osman and Van Epps cassette that has duets.

The arrangement "everybody" seems to know is the Dave van Ronk arrangement but he (DvR) put that together sometime in the 50s or so; the tune is much older than that. I think originally it was a piano rag but the best recording I know is Vess Ossman on Columbia in about 1905, re-released any number of times but I'm not sure where (I think my copy is an old Yazoo vinyl, half Ossman and the other side Van Eps. Yummm) When I made my tape for Marimac I simplified it to the point where i could play it. Somewhat different tune and emphasis from van Ronk's. Sorry I don't have a specific place to point to.

I'm pretty sure Arlo Guthrie recorded it on PRECIOUS FRIEND. I'll check.

Forgot you asked for the recording, too. It's way, way out of print, but if you can't find one, I'll make you a copy of my "Ragtime Jug Stompers" LP. It's a bit worn, but what's nifty is that the stereo separation is so strong you can isolate DVR's guitar as he plays lead, backup, whatever.

Perhats someone else can help - dwditty?

Hey there, MMario....

That's one good URL. I had the privelege of working on this song with Dave Van Ronk at a workshop before one of his shows - one of my "life's greatest moments."

Another tab I'd really like to get (it would be a great one for DVR) is "A Real Slow Drag" from Scott Joplin's "Treemonisha."

Has anyone seen it?

....Tiger

Can anyone tell me where to find a very good recorded, cd if possible, version of St. Louis Tickle? Tablature would be exquisite.
