Hi, Thomas! Brooklynite, actually: Flatbush, where we sang "Friendly World" at P.S. 249. Wound up in Detroit by way of Rhode Island, answered a job ad in a trade publication.

Hi Cool Beans,
Thanks for posting.
Another Bronxite! How did you wind up in Detroit ???
I was at PS 87 (north Bronx, Wakefield section which extends into
Westchester County).
The "Little Songs on Big Subjects" sadly seem to be forgotten, and
sadly their message still needs to be learned.
Best wishes, Thomas.

I have the Ronnie Gilbert/Leon Bibb recording and I remember many of the songs from elementary school and TV public service spots. We sang "I Want To Live in a Friendly World" in elementary school in New York in the 1950s. I've recorded it on my CD "Sixteen Monkeys and 16 Other Songs," available from CD Baby, iTunes etc.

I am surprised there has been no response to my post - perhaps
there are no more old-timers on the list.

The ARGOSY music site has lots of interesting information, also
there is a brief article in WIKI.

Hy Zaret and Lou Singer - composers of LITTLE SONGS ON BIG SUBJECTS,
ONE MEAT BALL, ATOM AND EVIL etc. are mentioned in a few Mudcat threads.
I became aware of their work in the 1940's from a 78rpm album of
Little songs, which were also sung at school.
In the 1960's a series of LPs on the MOTIVATION RECORDS label expanded
the material available, with performers including RONNIE GILBERT,
MARAIS & MIRANDA, LEON BIBB, TOM GLAZER and others.

Some of those LP's have been re-released on CD by HARBINGER records.
