I havn't really decide which way I'll be traveling yet.. your offer is certainly interesting, but, there is one possible fly in the ointment. I have a 75 pound labrador retriever that goes everywhere with me. I cant leave him here for two months. He is totally house broken, and he has beeb to, and graduated from obedience school. When meeting new people, he tends to get excited, but will settle down after a bit. Would he be a problem? He is not allowed on furniture or beds. (some dog owners are buggy about that) I'd like to spend at least an evening around there. Might even be there for Wednesday the 5th. so we could drop in on the Mudcat radio.

Dear Kendall,

Yes, I live in Blue Bell, outside of Philly, N of Norristown, near the point where the NE extension of the PA tpke meets the E-W part of the tpke. On your trip South, will you be coming down the tpke, or taking 81 to skip the Philly area? Do you have dates worked out yet? Are you thinking about possibly coming down when annap has her gathering in NJ, the 14 to 16 of Jan?

I live in a small "mother-in-law apartment" in the home of some friends of mine. Their house also has a guest room, and I have been able to have friends and singers stay there when they're passing through.

This area is about 6 or 7 hours from Boston, and about 3 hours from DC. There is a terrific open circle on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month, and we are close to Mudcat Central, and can drop in for Weds. night mudcat radio when it resumes the 2nd Weds in Jan. I'm pretty well connected to the local folk scene, and know where there are open stages on various nights, etc.

Let me know if you might be passing this way, and might need somewhere to stay for a night or two, and/or a guide to the local folk scene. There is a maritime museum in Phila, which might interest you, also a restaurant on an old ship, and a WWII-era Navy ship one can tour. We also have a tall ship, and I know about 3 of the all-volunteer sailors on her. I would be happy to show you around if you came this way.

Best regards,

Mary

Mary, the host of NPR's "Whaddya Know?" is Michael Feldman. Marty Feldman was the odd-looking actor with 2 wall eyes who played Igor (EYE-gor) in "Young Doctor Frankenstein" with Gene Wilder. I'm sure there are LOTS of people that fall between Hanoi Jane and Igor!

Sorry

Had to have a lie down. Vast quantities of chocolate for Christmas presents, mixed with little sleep, a chest infection and Sean Connery on telly this very minute, meant that things got a little on top of me (I should wish!)

Bumfluff is to beards what soup is to a meal, a good way to start, but I wouldn't like it all the time.

LTS, who will now be having medication, and hopes to be better soon.

Bumfluff - for those of you too drunk to work this one out - is the pre-pubescent beginnings of a beard, as seen on schoolboys who want to look old enough to get into a pub, but forget to take off their school uniform when doing so. It is the fine, soft fuzz that preceeds the rough, tough bristly stuff that gets silkier the longer it is grown....fi4hd$*(&*$%£""£*% ^

Spaw, You made me burst out laughing again... All I can say is, it's a good thing I went to the bathroom BEFORE I got on mudcat!!!

Kendall, Your list sounds pretty reasonable to me. Now, how close does one have to be to Jane Fonda? Isn't Marty Feldman the guy with the "Whadd'ya Know?" program? Sorry, the pictures don't come in too clearly on my radio yet, so I don't know what he looks like.

Now the relocating thing could be a stumbling block if one were expected to sign on for a multi-year voyage from the getgo. However, if shorter hitches were available, one could try the Gypsy life out and see. At least your route is better than winters in Maine, summers in the south! The relocating and traveling requirements are probably a stumbling block for those with a corporate or government career, or parents or children they want or need to be near. Perhaps you need to realize you're looking for someone without such attachments, or else make provisions to give the first mate ample leave when needed.

Has this helped any? Anybody else have any thoughts for Kendall on this? Let me know if you think my suggestions are reasonable, Kendall.

Best regards,

Mary

I dont mind at all, here 'tis:

1. must be intelligent (mentally stimulating)
2. Must be a liberal (compassionate)
3. Reasonably attractive..(somewhere between Marty Feldman and Jane Fonda) 5. Sense of humor (she would need it being with me)
6. healthy libido
7. willing to relocate (I'm not)
8. willing to spend winters in the south, summers in Maine.
9. Nature lover.
10. Like to travel.

To Kendall and everyone-Merry Christmas!

Kendall, perhaps if you're not ready to throw your list away, you might share it with us. We might be able to give you feedback as to whether it's helpful, or holding you back. That is, if it's not an x-rated list, etc, that you wouldn't want to share. If I'm being too inquisitive, just ignore this-no offense intended.

Maybe my feeling around this aspect of the Mudcat will relax with time.

I'm unattached to Kendall. I have stopped comparing men to my list. I threw my list away. I just know, the right guy will show up at the right time.
Until then, I strum my banjo, spend time with good friends, spend a great deal of time alone. I involve myself in the Mudcat community, and partake in lots of other things that capture my interest and make me feel alive.
I have found having more than a 'spoon full of brains' can be very intimidating for some men.
Merry Christmas Kendall

The Torah does mention not shaving the corners of your beard, however , at the time of the Gulf War we had to wear gas masks. They weren't air(or gas)tight when you had a beard. So you had to shave them off. Only orthodox Jews could get a special sort of gas mask to accommodate beards. These were in short suply. Later on anyone there was a court case about discrimination against non believing bearded Jewish folksinging males.I think we won. Anyway here in Israel beards are common among Jews, Muslims, priests, rabbis and goats. My own beard, growing up in the UK, was a protest, and went with socialism. It also diguised a fat face. As in Roald Dahl's "The Twits" it is a good place to park a snack for later. Jack.

I grew my beard in 1971 and for the mostpart I have had one ever since. I shaved it off when my daughter was 4 because a can of deck leveling epxoy fell on my me from a boat in the yard and I had to get it off or be burnedy resin. Rebekkah was oddly silent but her brothers, then 1.5 screamed. I grew it back as fast as was possible and have been bearded ever since.

And yes Ms. Muse, My Sweetie also uses it to grab my attention and make sure I'm paying attention.

Seamus Kennedy has joined in (For the first time???) and for those who don't know Seamus he is a fine singer, a guitarist I envy, and a wit of amazing agility. Besides, he's always nice to me and the rest of The Flyn' Column when ever we share a bill.

Michael K when I got my long hair cut quite short my 18 month old son, who was in the hair dresser's, kept backing away from me. I put my hat on and then he was happier. It was a surprise when he was five to hear him tell me he missed my long hair. I've been growing it out and now its a little past shoulder length and he likes playing with it. I've dated men with beards and men without. I find them neither off-putting nor deadly attractive. Mostly it depends on whether the man is comfortable with himself. Three day stubble is uncomfortable to rub up against.

Granted having a beard does age us....I know I look at least 6-7 years younger without mine.....but I am so used to having it - having only shaved it completely off, once about 7 years ago (and immediately regretted it and started growing it back.)

Funny thing was that my daughter who at the time was 2 years old and had never seen me without the beard, made "strange" with me when I emerged from the bathroom. It was pretty funny but rather distressing for her and she refused to believe I was her Dad. I'm reasonably sure I am. (grin)

Usually when people who know you see you without the beard, they usually ask if you've lost weight, and don't clue in to the fact that the beard is gone. I just tell them ''No, haven't lost any weight. The Bank repossessed it!"

(Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year to all Mudcatters.)

I can see why men wouldn't want to shave every day. I wouldn't want to have to curl, blow-dry, etc, every day, so I wear my hair shortish, and I can truly just "wash'n go" Growing a beard also means partners wouldn't have to rub against their scratchy growing whiskers every evening, or in the morning before rising.

I tend to agree with those who like short, soft beards. If it's not soft, then why have it right there where you want to get kissed and snuggled? And I wouldn't complain about grey-my hair's all silver, and I get a lot of compliments on it. I would complain about dandruff-my ex had that in his beard. You notice he's my ex...

Long hair can be ok. I do have one friend who used to have very long hair and beard, and he was lonely for a long time. He looked rather like Jesus. It was a lot like an off-putting mask-kind of distancing. When he shaved it off, he soon got into a long-term relationship.

Bald heads are also fine-another surface that's sensitive to touch. It's really more the man than the hair-facial or otherwise. Does he have a sense of humor? Is he playful? Open? Kind? Sensitive? Loving? Sensuous? Does he treat a woman well? These things are the most important qualities, more than where he has hair, or doesn't.

Beards.... ah yes,,,, been through that stage many a time.... reason? sheer laziness..... that's all.... i have my beard now, because I HATE shaving.... If I use a blade, i have to shave every day or it looks messy, if i use the electic razor, twice a day..... I HATE SHAVING.... All that time wasted....

So right now my beard is of the short style, although, much to my daughter's shagrin, I am not trimming the cheeks or the neck (If I have the beard because i hate shaving why would I want to keep trimming those little bits every day?) I do keep it short (see picture on the BBC pages), however, there was a time.... a few years ago.... in my younger days..... working on the festival circut... that I let my beard go for 1.5 years without touching it.... the results can be viewed here (i hope)... this was about 1981 with some folks at the Vancouver Children's festival.... The folks with me are part of the Flying Fruit Fly Circus from Albury/Wondonga in Aussie.... It was a great place to store pencils etc.... Of course that disappeared when I got married .....

I always remember a comment from university days.... Had a beard for a while, went home one weekend, shaved the beard, left the moustache.... come back to university on the monday... Your friends looks at you strange saying "There's something different about you.... Not sure what it is...... Did you grow a moustache?"

Observant friends....

What does this all mean? Absolutely nothing... other than I like my beard, it makes my life a whole lot simpler.....

I should like to point out to THE FAIR ONE that I have a beard of the perfect length, as described by her wonderful self................EEEEEEEEEEEYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSS. I grew my beard in 1970, and it has pretty well been with me ever since. I remember cutting it off once when my two oldest girls (who are now 21 and 23) were 2 and 4. They sat there on the floor watching their Da, with great interest. When I was done the 4 year old popped up and said, "Da, you got cheeks". When I cut it off, I look much younger, so I imagine that I will cut it off one of these days.

I like them full and bushy ... but nicely trimmed. Never had a hankering to date a Hassid because their beards tend to be too long and straggly. Goatees are too artsy-fartsy. I also like long hair and ponytails, as long as it's clean and well-kempt. Greasy, dirty anything is not appealing. And, yes, kendall, beards do age most men, but who cares, if you love beards! moonchild

Well here's a thread that has got to me. How can anyone not love beards.....? There are some exceptions of course, I do tend to avoid those men who use their beards as a food store, much like a hamster uses its cheeks, and I don't particularly like those bumfluff efforts, but since seeing Sean Connery at the age of 11 and falling hopelessly in love with him, I've always gone for hairy blokes, and that usually means bearded. When I saw Sean with the beard in 'Highlander', my life was complete.....

Out of the 25+ blokes I've ever been out with, only 5 didn't have facial hair, and that only because 4 or them weren't old enough......!

And here is my two cents . . . . I love beards. . .er, beard. The one on the face of my Sweetie is the only one that counts, of course. What woman in their right mind would want to subject themselves to "whisker burn" when there can be a soft, soft beard to nuzzle? And it's a handy to thing to grab when caressing your man's cheek to make sure he's paying attention!

I started my beard back in high school--70-71. I've shaved it off a couple of times since then, the last time in 1984. My wife won't let me shave mine off either. She loves it, sections of gray and all. I'm simultaneously curious and afraid to see my chin after all these years.

My father died when I was nine, but I vividly remember him shaving before Mass on Sunday mornings, and occasionally cutting himself and getting a freshly ironed white shirt slightly bloodied. The resultant panic caused me to vow never to shave. I was told later at school that when some Asian men start to grow facial hair they pluck each strand out by the roots so that it never grows again. This seemed a wee bit drastic, so I opted for the beard growing option as soon as I left school. I've had a beard permanently since 1972 and most of my friends have never seen me without it. During a recent crisis of self esteem I asked my wife for her views about shaving it off. Being the saint that she is she politely offered "No, you'll just look old and wrinkled if people can actually see your face!"

Best wishes, John

I gotta tell ya, I got the world's crappiest looking beard. Additionally, the two times I have gone 6 months or so, I look like a cross between Joe Palooka and the wandering Jew.

And then there's the shaving thing....I know this is sacrilege or something, but I honestly like to shave. It has always given me a clean feeling that improves my spirits right away. I dunno why...just a simpleton I guess. Takes so little to make me happy. (Yeah, I know..."And that's what she said to you last night, ain't it Spaw?")

Why do people keep talking about growing a beard as if that was an action you did? It isn't, except in the sense that breathing is an action. If you are male, a beard is what happens once you are grown, unless you go through some regular shaving ritual.

Some people stick safety pins through their cheeks, some people have studs in their belly buttons, some people shave their chins every day. If it turns them on, fine. I'd just prefer to go through life without cutting bits off my body when I can avoid it.

Here's a song I wrote when someone working in a supermarket was getting hassled for having a beard.

While shopping at the Superstore
I sometimes feel so insecure -
everything's so neat and clean and trim.
They don't like noone with a beard,
or acting strange or looking weird -
they much prefer you with a foolish grin.

(ch)They don't like beards on the men,
they don't like beads on the women,
they want people just as standard as a pill.
They don't want no raucous laughter,
they just want peace ever after -
they want some kind of robots at the till.

It may sound crazy, but it's actual,
they don't like people if they're natural,
you must be squeaky clean to be OK.
They don't want men with hairy jaws -
why, Jesus Christ or Santa Claus,
they'd never get to work one single day.

(ch)They don't like beards on the men,
they don't like beads on the women,
they want people just as standard as a pill.
They don't want no raucous laughter,
they just want peace ever after -
they want some kind of robots at the till.

I had a dream I half remember
that Christmas waited till December,
and Santa Claus was working on the till.
There was local food from local farmers,
and free range eggs and small bananas,
and the stuff they sold would never make you ill.

(ch)And there were beards on the men,
and there were beads on the women,
people there in every shape ans size,
And all kinds of laughter,
bringing life ever,
Meaning some kind of freedom in our lives.

Well if you find that you agree
that that is how it ought to be,
you could make it happen if you tried.
Oh they can say it's just naive,
but we can get it, if we believe.
There's just some common sense to be applied.

(ch)Like growing beards on the men,
and hanging beads on the women,
people come in every shape and size,
Making all kinds of laughter,
bringing life ever,
Meaning some kind of freedom in our lives.

Or maybe beads on the men,
and maybe beards on the women,
people come in every size and shape.
So raise high the rafter,
and get what you're after -
meaning some kind of freedom and escape.

Tune - more like "Keep your feet still Geordie Hinny" than anything. Or "Plastic Jesus".

"Small bananas" - these of course are the sort that come from peasant famers in the Windward Isles in the Caribbean, which the big American run banana companies like Chiquita are trying to drive out of business, with the help of American government trade sanctions and the good old World Trading Organisation, using trade sanctions to force countries in Europe into line.

Somewhere in hhere someone asked for a woman's preference for beards... and only Moonchild responded.... so here's my 2c....

Beards are horrible when they are just starting... that "rasp the face off you first week"... why some people think that they should keep them trimmed to that length is beyond me unless they have a masochistic partner..... it is no fun to snuggle up against. Likewise the Bog Geldof just grow a few lines here and there.. looks silly, and probably hard to maintain.....

then there is that lovely soft phase....... neat ... and fun to snuggle up to.....

then there is the ZZ Top half way down your chest beard.... looks OK if you have nice facial hair... more often looks like wrongly located pubes.... hahahaha...

from reading this... you should see that I prefer the neat, and short but soft version.......

I've just had three weeks off duty and done a gray check in the beard. My chin has gone bright white while the rest has remained dark. I look like I'm trying to swallow a skunk head first.

About fifteen years ago, when my beard covered the third button of my shirt, I ran into a friend I hadn't seen in quite a few years. Ramona is a memeber of the local German Baptist congregation, whose men grow quite long and prosperous beards. After a big hug on greeting, Ramona grabbed my whiskers and asked "What's this?"

I said "Mona, this is a beard, you ought to know what this is."

She gave me a big smooch on the cheek and delivered one of my favorite lines about facial hair. "Honey, kissing a man without a beard is like eating a taco without hot sauce."

First, let me remind everyone that Joe Offer does not, I repeat, does not, have a beard. That is if he hasn't grown one since retirement.

Growing a beard and wearing one's hair long is a traditional form of male protest. And weren't some of us drawn to those protest singers. It also means, usually, "I don't work for a big corporation" (unless it is on the assembly line. Joe used to work for the big government see.

So the beard is a signal.

I began growing mine a week before discharge from the U.S. Army. It was definitely a protest and it was a way I could tell people that I was a little left of center (this was 1971). In 1972, I worked for the Farboil Paint Company. I was a promising young chemist in their quality control division. One day the V.P. for the laboratory took me aside and said, "The big guy thinks you have a bright future with the company. He would like to send you out to our customers to assist them with any problems they have with our product. But some of them are rather conservative and the big guy thinks you should shave your beard before we do that."

Well, the message was clear. I thought about it for one long night. It was a crisis point for me. Would it be values or money?

Well, I chose values (I think). I told the V.P. I didn't plan on shaving anytime soon and I began looking for another job.

Now I work in the addictions field. I think all white guys are required to have beards (or so it seems) if they started out in drug abuse treatment. The field is ripe with old hippies and freaks. If they started out in alcoholism treatment, they are most likely clean-shaven.

Well, I do ramble on don't I? I should also mention that without a beard I have a decidedly moon-shaped face. I talked with Marge about cutting my beard (just to see if it feels different after 30 odd years). She said, "Don't you dare!" 'Nuff said!

My beard grew when I stopped shaving the bottom end of my face, many years ago, because I was always in a rush in the mornings and didn't fancy looking myself in the face at that time of the day.

Noone goes asking why someone is so eccentric as not to shave the top of their head. What's the difference?

A few years ago I got curious what I looked like under that, and shaved it off. My wife took one look and said "grow it again immediately."

The eye glass things got all steamy and my voice became all muffled. Also there was all sorts of thunder and lightning going on . I could voices speaking in many tongues and all of them saying things like "He scud off his beard" "sa damm shame" etc . So I knew it was a punishment from God for daring to shave off my beard . I resolved never again to touch a hair on my face. Now whenever I hear a siren I just stick my finger in my ear and sing"The Holy Ground"

I also dislike shaving (runing over pimples with an electric razor is NOT fun!) but 11 o' clock shadows are scratchy and really annoying, so you have to shave to stop the itch!

I just shaved my beard off as well. In my case the reason is simple. I am lazy and hate shaving. I am also no good at triming a beard so I tend to let it grow to a point where it starts to irritate me, shave it off and start again. Every time I shave it off, I go through a couple of days of shaving but then drift back again.
