Probably not the Monty Python song but who knows.

Another defiantly joyful song- If I Should Fall From Grace With God by the Pogues.

I put "Happy shiny people" on the jukebox in the Little Angel in Whitby during a Goth weekend. Definitely defiant and joyful. Until I got beat up...

I don't waste time with songs I don't care for. Life's too short.

Back to the O.P, my wife and I were preparing dinner last night and Pata Pata started playing on my Happy Stuff Spotify playlist and we danced in the kitchen.

Another joyful song Enjoy Yourself by Jim Kweskin

Also the Byrds version of Dylan's You Ain't Going Nowhere.

You're not the only one who doesn't like "wretch". I don't either, and I've seen versions that go

Amazing grace, how sweet the sound
that saved and set me free...

Nonetheless, I have told the DH that if he permits Amazing Grace to be sung at my funeral, I will come back and haunt him.

Damned fine tune though, and, in my experience, no-one knows the words beyond the first line anyway...

Lemme creep over to songs others find uplifting but I can't stand: amazing grace (I am not a wretch, and neither are you), also usually heard at funerals.

Most defiantly Joyful line line:
"For we are young and the world is wide" (Rambling boys of pleasure)

Most defiant verse
"Early in the morning I paced thhe guardhouse round,
I jumped out of a window and knocked three of them to the ground
The Corporal and his buddies they was quickly after me,
But I made me way to Birkenhead and so gained me liberty

I am a Rambling Roayal, Jame Cronin is me name
I can fight as many officers as you'll see in the Marines
I can fight as many Orangeman as ever banged a drum
And I'll make 'em run before me like a bullet from a gun"
(Rambling Royal aka as Belfast Shoemaker)
Jim Carroll

(Reposting - first post seems to have been erased)

Read the BBC article ( I think) on Google, then went to the song.

I did not find the story of the song depressing - thought it was upbeat and lyrical and I was amazed at how timeless it sounded. I can see why it survived so long. And it outlasted apartheid - perhaps because it was a celebration of living ( defiantly happy in the face of crushing oppression) .

1. I won't link to the BBC article, because BBC music messes with my own music software.

2. I listened to part of the recording. It does not sound joyful. There is no trace of a smile in Miriam's voice, and it seems like a song of protest or ridicule.
