WOWZA

That goes into the all time classic verses file!

Thank You.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

The third Sunday of each July, (USA) tomorrow, is declared "National Ice Cream Day." A national retailer offers a free scoop if you show a current inoculation card. Since covid, I have been required to verify before dances, and banquets.   The rsv and flrt have been running rampant in the last 3 months. Innoc or not ... some are on their fouth experience.

Whoa! That's quite a song! Thank you, cnd.

I emailed Glen and asked him if we found the right song.

Here's my transcription of Let Me See Your Papers, as sung by Anne Price (note the "E" which I dropped above). It's from her 1997 album Hearth & Fire. listen -- it's a funny song I'd never heard before, so thanks for bringing it up.

LET ME SEE YOUR PAPERS

It's been a lovely evening and I can't remember when
I met someone like you whom I would like to see again
But nowadays it's hard to tell the kinky from the kind
So I'll need some references, I hope that you won't mind

Here's an application, you can take it home with you
Fill it out and fax it to my office when you're through
Every new relationship requires this, you see
You'll be in my database, a mere formality

You say you're separated, is it true or just a game?
Is it merely contemplated? Tell me what's your lawyers' name
I'll have to have some legal proof you're living 'neat a separate roof
Let me see your papers, please

Your telephone's unlisted, I already checked it out
Are you living with some girlfriend, or alone -- I kind of doubt
If the bill is in your name, I'll need a copy of the same
Let me see your papers, please

A blood test is essential before the second date
I know a cozy laboratory where they're open late
They even have a small cafe they serve you herbal teas
While waiting to inform you if you're free of all disease

And if you're not infectious, we can plan a kiss
I can tell you're really looking forward to all this
Call me overcautious, but it really isn't true
Thoroughness is everything, a spot check will not do

And anyone who uses drugs can't be a friend of mine
So take this little bottle and fill it to the line
Dark and handsome stranger, you could be a danger
Let me see your papers, please

Do you now or have you ever owned a hatchet or a gun?
Will you sign this affidavit indicating you have none?
And just for curiosity, I'll take your glove compartment key
Let me see papers, please

And when it comes to money, are you careful, are you rash?
Don't you own a credit card? I saw you using cash
Have you any tenure in this job you're working at?
If you have a contract, you can copy me on that

What color is your parachute? I surely hope it's gold
Are you planning for retirement? You know you're getting old
Are you in the market? Are you bull or are you bear?
Show me your portfolio if you really care

Were you ever in the army? Arabia or 'Nam?
Civil War? Well frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn
Just don't forget to mention any kind of pension
Let me see your papers, please

Are you an organ donor? Do you have a living will?
Can I be your health proxy when we're both over the hill?
A little kiss, a little hug, and soon it's time to pull the plug
Let me see your papers, please

It was wonderful to meet you, and I hope you will agree
One cannot be too careful in this age of infamy
You are a prince among the men, but until we meet again
Let me see your papers, please.

I don't think it's right, but reminds me of the Archie Campbell bit, Archie's Little Black Book. The Kentucky Colonels did a similar bit they called "A Girl Named Ruth" on their live album, Livin' In The Past (link) -- the actual album has an additional title for this song, but it's not on its own band.

Instead, I think the song is Ann Price's Let Me See Your Papers. Its easy enough to hear, so I'll post the lyrics directly in a separate message.

from glen197:

This is or was a satirical song about gathering info from a perspective date. I am looking for the recording and the lyrics.
