gargoyle asked me to drop in. It appears that someone has been "courting/corrupting" harpgirl....and the intentions might be less than honorable.

So.... here is a "free-public-posting."

With the Girl Scouts we make a pan pipe made out of PVC piping, wood slats, twine, and modeling clay. The PVC is cut in varying lengths. You don't have to worry about accuracy at this stage because you tune them later. We used 4 lengths per pipe, but you can make them larger. Sand the rough edges of at least one end of each pipe. Line the pipes, small to large, between two slats, approx dimensions, 1/4"x1"xlength need to hold pipes. Lash tightly in place. The smooth ends should be even at the top. Put a lump of modeling clay in the bottom of each pipe. (Bottom should be completely closed.) The pipe is played by blowing across the top, like a flute. Each length in the pipe is tuned by pushing the clay up (raises tone) or pulling it out (lowers tone).

Simple enough.

More refined pan-pipe techniques to follow.

Dearest Doctor....please SHARE.....if you DARE...

Dr. Sound -- the stone waterspot was hinting (I think) that it might be nice if you posted the materials list and directions for making a pan pipe here in the forum. Or write it up as an article and submit it to Max for the e-zine.

We could build you one it is very straight foward

I live in Tallahassee Forida and bamboo is easy to get river cane works or you could order bamboo from me. tuning is a matter of adjusting the length untill you arrive at the tone you are after.

I use a little toy keyboard as a standard. As far as your zampona check it to see how well in tune it is that will affect the quality of your playing.

bending down to a half step is the only way to go with the pipes there is no reaching up.

Is that the same Karas that did the Harry Lime Theme?

Meanwhile, back in the thread ... I bought a Zampona a while ago. I can get a tune out of it, sort of - I play the harmonica, and it's similar (except you never get to breathe in!). But try as I might, I just can't bend the notes to get flats. I know what I'm supposed to do, but it doesn't work! Any suggestions? If I could get going on the thing, I reckon it would be fairly straightforward to make a big one.

Steve

Be careful of meeting him in private Harpgirl... Pan was notorious for more than his flute.

Why private Doc???

How about, a public link to PUBLIC POSTINGS....

if YOU are not "up to it" perhaps others can find some.

Is anyone interested in building their own pan pipe.

Materials are Bamboo or river cane, fishing line, Keyboard, hack saw, finger nail polish,600 sand paper, and a rough sanding belt, knife, hammer and a sock with the toe cut out.

It is necesary to know how to tune if you are unsure we can pass wave files back and forth and come to an understanding of what tuning is or you can go out and buy an electronic tuner. But that I think takes away alot of the fun.

If you have an interest but feel unsure about attempting this with in a public forum

Please contact me at sagerb@earthlink.net we can set up private sessions.

Barry
