Subject: RE: Guest again? From: GUEST,Auxiris Date: 20 Mar 00 - 04:15 AM Couldn't agree with you more, Garry, after the mess my computer ended up in after I tried to join! cheers, Aux |
Subject: RE: Guest again? From: GUEST,Garry Of Australia Date: 19 Mar 00 - 05:40 AM I have some involvement in the computer industry, one seminar I attended recently and another I attended last year warned that cookies are the next biggest upcoming virus threat, I refuse to accept cookies. So I will remain a guest |
Subject: RE: Guest again? From: Joe Offer Date: 19 Mar 00 - 04:56 AM I'm wondering - with Internet Explorer 5, you can set the cookie-accepting principles for various types of sites. There's a category for "trusted" sites, where you would be likely to allow unimpaired acceptance of cookies. Is there a way for me to designate Mudcat as a "Trusted" site, or is it Bill Gates who makes the designations? -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Guest again? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 18 Mar 00 - 01:31 PM GUEST,Singout aka Sail - you can change your name when you reset your cookie, no sweat. So long as the name you want to change to isn't one that someone already has. |
Subject: RE: Guest again? From: The Beanster Date: 18 Mar 00 - 12:46 PM Yes, biggest threat of virus comes from opening unknown attachments in e-mail--not giving out your e-mail address. But the worst virus my computer ever got (down for 2 miserable weeks!) was called AOL 5.0. |
Subject: RE: Guest again? From: Bud Savoie Date: 18 Mar 00 - 12:32 PM I am still only marginally web-fluent, at best. In my younger years, "cookie" was a street word for the female genitalia, and I don't have any to reset. However, it seems that someone else has done me the favor, since I am once again a member of the 'Cat. |
Subject: RE: Guest again? From: GUEST,Singout aka Sail Date: 18 Mar 00 - 09:35 AM Guess I'll just be a guest. Resetting my cookie would not recognize my prior name of sail, underwhich my t-shirt and donation was purchased/made. Got married, changed computers so when I visit I do not mind being a guest--I'm certainly not a musician! Penny. |
Subject: RE: Guest again? From: Jon Freeman Date: 18 Mar 00 - 08:27 AM Guest, there are millions of people with email addresses who don't have any problems - if it was a virus from email perhaps you opened an attachment that contained a virus - we can all get caught out but most problems are avoided by a few simple precautions like (and I'm not saying you did) don't open an attachment if you do not know who sent it and why. Jon PS being a "Guest" is not a stigma. |
Subject: RE: Guest again? From: GUEST,guest Date: 18 Mar 00 - 08:08 AM The only time I put my e-mail address on the Internet, my computer crashed two days later. The man who re-built it said he couldn't understand what was the matter. In the same time period, a friend and neighbor's computer crashed with some of the same strange messages on it. I suspect that when I identified myself, someone put a virus on my computer. Until Mudcat stops asking for my e-mail address I will remain stigmatized as a (gasp!) Guest. |
Subject: RE: Guest again? From: CBjames Date: 17 Mar 00 - 11:45 PM I guest I should have known, ha ha. I visit from several machines & haven't registered on more than a few. Kat's right. It's the cookie that does it. Sacrifice your privacy & you won't be stigmatized as a GUEST. ( I also log on as a GUEST by my real name James Bridgland. I'm less afraid of of revealing myself than I am of cluttering up my system with cookies) jamus |
Subject: RE: Guest again? From: katlaughing Date: 17 Mar 00 - 11:29 PM Have you tried going to Quick Links and Resetting Your Cookie? That might do it. |
Subject: Guest again? From: GUEST,Bud Savoie Date: 17 Mar 00 - 11:23 PM I guested around on variious Mudcat threads for a couple of months until I took the plunge and became a full-fledged member. Suddenly I find myself back in the guestroom, and I don't like it here. That is to say, my thread responses have that GUEST prefix, implying that I am a non-initiate. Explanation? |
