Subject: RE: Tune Req: '..going round the bend..90miles an From: Mark Ross Date: 02 Apr 10 - 05:18 PM Utah Phillips wrote a parody of OLD 97; "He was coming down the grade doing 7 miles an hour 'Cause his airbrakes were locked all the way, They found him in the wreck with his hand on the bottle, He raised his head these dying words to say. If I ever get my hands on that featherbedding fireman, There's gonna be a brawl I hope to tell, 'Cause he topped off my boiler with a half a pint of redeye, And blowed the whoe shebang to Hell!" Subject: RE: Tune Req: '..going round the bend..90miles an From: MGM·Lion Date: 02 Apr 10 - 01:25 AM I have certainly always known the words in "Old 97" as "Going down grade making 90 miles an hour". Could there be some conflation with the lines in that other wellknown train wreck song, the Carter Family's "The FFV, or The Wreck On The C&O Road": ~~ 'Around the bend she darted and against the rocks she smashed Upside down the engine turned and Georgie's breast was crushed'? ~Michael~ |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: '..going round the bend..90miles an From: GUEST,JT Date: 02 Apr 10 - 12:32 AM There is a comedy version of Wreck of the old 97 by The Geezinslaws that has something about He was goin' round the bend doing 90 miles an hour when the chain on his bicycle broke. He was found in the wreck with the sprocket in his pocket and punctured to death by the spokes. That's all of it I remember |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: '..going round the bend..90miles an From: Barbara Date: 30 Mar 00 - 01:20 AM One of the parodies is "Superskier". "He was going round the bend doing 90 miles an hour When he caught an edge of his ski Oh his skis were fast but the slopes were faster That's the last of Superskier we shall see."

Subject: RE: Tune Req: '..going round the bend..90miles an From: Amos Date: 29 Mar 00 - 01:59 PM Plumbers don't go 'round bends at that speed, kevin, man! It knocks the s__t out of 'em! And the units are all wrong for psychiatrists -- I think they measure deterioration in patients as "going around the bend at nnety bucks an hour". A |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: '..going round the bend..90miles an From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 29 Mar 00 - 01:53 PM I note it's "down the grade", and I've got is as "down the track" in my mind - but either way maybe "going round the bend" means it's from one of those parodies, and we haven't solved it after all.
Maybe we shold be looking for a song about a plumbing contractor or a psychiatrist?
