There are a lot of young people who find the various archive sites, like the MIDI sites, and the ABC archives and learn songs from there, and not just identified folk/traditional music fans--

There is nothing easier that playing a MIDI or ABC file a few times, and then playing along with it to learn the melody--it may take a while for this to make a noticeable impact on the music kids play and listen to, but I am willing to bet that it will--Onw kid learns a song, tells a friend, and the friend learns the same tune, and then looks for something he or she can tell people about.

Of course, there no telling what the songs will end up sounding like, because kids like to experiment and make things their own, but then, that is the folk process..

FOLK ROOTS AND BLUES RULE!!! I been on a Midnight Special kick for the past week! I love it all, and thanks to suggestions from my beloved Catters, I am learning more and more music everyday!

judging by the numbers of kids I see at folk festivals, having a really good time, it's safe. It's always been a minority interest in the music world which is reflected in the numbers of kids who listen to it, I would guess. My daughter doesn't care for it much but she comes to our gigs and to festivals and one day..one day :)

Definately not - but sometimes you've got to grab their attention by devious means - what about the more dance based folk - the scottish acid croft. You can sometimes hook them that way. We always submit Cat's friends to a wide variety of music in the car in an attempt to educate.

I worry about Radio 1's attitude because if you live by the sword you will die by it - miss one major trend shift in music and they are history.

The number of teenagers playing incredible traditional Irish music at Irish Week at the Augusta Heritage Center gives me a great deal of hope for the next generation. There are also a lot of even younger kids that completely blow me away. Traditional, folk, and blues will never die. It just ebbs and flows like the tides.

Following on from the Andy Kershaw string I would like to know if you think pop and dance music are the only music forms suitable for teenagers. This seems to be the view of Andy Parfitt. He may be right but I would hate to htink that the music I love would not also be loved by younger generations if only they were given the chance to hear it. Any thoughts
