Subject: RE: that's unusual From: LR Mole Date: 13 Oct 00 - 09:02 AM My Mom used to do the "penny for a knife" thing; for some reason I always thought it was a holdover custom so one wouldn't use a weapon against a supplier, though that looks sort of stupid when I write it down like that. Also, if a drinking glass broke in her hands while she was washing it (and didn't cut her), she'd break a match and put it into the bottom before throwing the glass away. I have NO idea what that was all about. |
Subject: RE: that's unusual From: Naemanson Date: 12 Oct 00 - 05:28 PM New candles should never stand unlit. They should be lit and then put out even if they are only for show. Never leave a house by a different door than the one you entered.

Subject: RE: that's unusual From: mousethief Date: 12 Oct 00 - 05:25 PM In my family you never give someone a knife without a penny enclosed. Then they're supposed to give you back the penny, because it's considered unlucky to receive a knife, but not to buy one. You give them the penny with the knife just in case they don't have the money to pay you out of their own pocket at the time. Is this the sort of "ritual" you mean?

Subject: RE: that's unusual From: Irish sergeant Date: 12 Oct 00 - 05:10 PM NAtasha; Hopefully I can help a bit. Submariners after a successfull mission would tie a broom to the mast on their vessel to signify they had swept the seas clean of the enemy. It is still traditional when building a house or some other such building to place a few coins under the corner stone. This is in lieu of a human sacrifice to ensure that the building and those therein will prosper. Keep in mind that what is tradition for one person may be reguarded as superstition by another. Subject: RE: that's unusual From: catspaw49 Date: 11 Oct 00 - 06:05 PM I try to walk backwards ten paces, turn around twice, leap high into the air and blast a fart every day at 5:49 PM. I then blow up a possum's ass for two minutes while pissing myself. I just finished and I certainly feel better now! Spaw |
Subject: RE: that's unusual From: Hollowfox Date: 11 Oct 00 - 05:27 PM Yay, Mousethief! I heard rumors that other studies on the Nacirema were written. Have you ever run across any? Seriously, Natasha, if you can narrow down your question to which rituals you're most interested in, we'll be able to give a lot more help. |

Subject: RE: that's unusual From: hesperis Date: 09 Oct 00 - 10:28 AM That's obsessive-compulsive behavior, not a ritual --- or is all ritual a form of obsessive-compulsive behavior? I must think on this. I will be back... |
Subject: RE: that's unusual From: kendall Date: 09 Oct 00 - 10:14 AM I have an Asian neighbor who goes to work at exactly 7:15 am every day. She comes out of the house, touches every tire of her car, always in the same pattern, then drives away. Does that count? |
