SINSULL, again. OOPS. Got cut off before I gave my plans for 2001. Put up the storm windows now that the first blizzard of the year has deposited 12+ inches. The air conditioners are still on the bedroom floor awaiting storage in the basement. I will work on procrastination although it is hard to believe I can get any better at it. Happy New Year all!

This is SINSULL:
First 2000 brought my son back to me. And if that wasn't enough I found Mudcat. For the first time in my life, I sang in front of people. Filled my house with dirty laundry and a messy kitchen courtesy of a nephew and friend who moved in while looking for an apartment and haven't left. I would never let them know, they are the best thing that could have happened to me.

It might interest you to know that a man raped a woman in a public park here in Portland last spring. He just went to court, and got 20 years. Maine has a truth in sentence law, so, that RAT BASTARD will have plenty of time to think about it.

The turnover of the New Year has always particularly special to Anne and me. Since I am not really comfortable in social situations which call for idle conversation, we'll spend the evening with a few friends, and come home soon after midnight to receive a 'phone call or two. Sounds exciting, right? It works for us.

I imagine that New Year's Eve will be spent watching the snow come down and watching the tube.

A few weeks ago I went shopping for a new suit to wear to Kathy's office party. After quite a bit of searching I found one that fit me perfectly - right off the rack. My level of pleasure at this success was instantly diminished when I discovered labels and tags all over the suit which read, "Portly". It was the final straw.

This morning I weigh 235 pounds. Most people would tell you that I carry it well and that nobody would ever guess I weigh that much. This is no longer of any consolation. My goal for the coming year is to see how may pounds I can shed in the next twelve months. My ideal weight is about 185 so you can see that I have my work cut out for me. Any and all support would be welcome.

Matt, I hope your life improves. It doesn't really sound too great right now.

For 2001, I hope to work sail on the topsail yard (I am dealing with major fear of heights), and eventually to do the same on a ship that is actually going somewhere instead of tied up at the dock. I've been trying to run away to sea all my life; wish me luck!

Jayohjo, I've been through rape by someone I knew. Also made sure my daughters and I took self-defense classes several years later when they became available where I lived. If you need to talk, please let me know by PM.

Wishing you peace and lots of feeling safe,

kat

On a (vaguely) more serious note - I don't usually do New Year Resolutions, but in the light of assorted things I found out recently about assorted men - linked to me, biologically and otherwise, and not linked to me personally at all - my resolutions are to carry a rape alarm at all times and take self-defence classes. I'm not as invincible as I'd like to think I am.

MMario, I took turns with my older sister, Jan, on the transmission hump and in the trunk compartment. Kristy and Lynn got to share the passenger seat because they were the youngest. Chuck didn't come along until much later.

I had a short list too.
1. You will come into the house.
2. You will look me in the eye.
3.You will have a firm handshake.

Only one of my 3 daughters suitors filled all three, and, after 20 years, he is still around. (Married one of them)

Well, that's kinda hard, since she's 25, and her parent's have been divorced since she was 1. Her father divorced her mother because he didn't want her to be born. I'm sure your test are irrelevant. Excuse me if I am nasty. Something terrible has happened to us and I am pissed off the no end. If I had my way, I'd by headed to ChiTown right now with a 2x4, ready to kick some jerk ass. Sorry.

1) touch her, you die

2) hurt her in any way, you die

3) late getting back? you die

Have a nice evening!

Here ya go Matt_R. As promised.
10 Simple reule for dating my daughter. Rule One:

If you pull into my driveway and honk you'd better be delivering a package, because you're sure not picking anything up.

Rule Two:

You do not touch my daughter in front of me. You may glance at her, so long as you do not peer at anything below her neck. If you cannot keep your eyes or hands off of my daughter's body, I will remove them.

Rule Three:

I am aware that it is considered fashionable for boys of your age to wear their trousers so loosely that they appear to be falling off their hips. Please don't take this as an insult, but you and all of your friends are complete idiots. Still, I want to be fair and open minded about this issue, so I propose this compromise: You may come to the door with your underwear showing and your pants ten sizes too big, and I will not object. However, in order to ensure that your clothes do not, in fact, come off during the course of your date with my daughter, I will take my electric nail gun and fasten your trousers securely in place to your waist.

Rule Four:

I'm sure you've been told that in today's world, sex without utilizing a "barrier method" of some kind can kill you. Let me elaborate, when it comes to sex, I am the barrier, and I will kill you.

Rule Five:

It is usually understood that in order for us to get to know each other, we should talk about sports, politics, and other issues of the day. Please do not do this. The only information I require from you is an indication of when you expect to have my daughter safely back at my house, and the only word I need from you on this subject is "early."

Rule Six:

I have no doubt you are a popular fellow, with many opportunities to date other girls. This is fine with me as long as it is okay with my daughter. Otherwise, once you have gone out with my little girl, you will continue to date no one but her until she is finished with you. If you make her cry, I will make you cry.

Rule Seven:

As you stand in my front hallway, waiting for my daughter to appear, and more than an hour goes by, do not sigh and fidget. If you want to be on time for the movie, you should not be dating. My daughter is putting on her makeup, a process that can take longer than painting the Golden Gate Bridge. Instead of just standing there, why don't you do something useful, like changing the oil in my car?

Rule Eight:

The following places are not appropriate for a date with my daughter: Places where there are beds, sofas, or anything softer than a wooden stool. Places where there are no parents, policemen, or nuns within eyesight. Places where there is darkness. Places where there is dancing, holding hands, or happiness. Places where the ambient temperature is warm enough to induce my daughter to wear shorts, tank tops, midriff T-shirts, or anything other than overalls, a sweater, and a goose down parka -- zipped up to her throat. Movies with a strong romantic or sexual theme are to be avoided; movies which features chain saws are okay. Hockey games are okay. Old folks homes are better.

Rule Nine:

Do not lie to me. I may appear to be a potbellied, balding, middle-aged, dimwitted has-been. But on issues relating to my daughter, I am the all-knowing, merciless God of your universe. If I ask you where you are going and with whom, you have one chance to tell me the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. I have a shotgun, a shovel, and five acres behind the house. Do not trifle with me.

Rule Ten:

Be afraid. Be very afraid. It takes very little for me to mistake the sound of your car in the driveway for a chopper coming in over a rice paddy near Hanoi. When my Agent Orange starts acting up, the voices in my head frequently tell me to clean the guns as I wait for you to bring my daughter home. As soon as you pull into the driveway you should exit your car with both hands in plain sight. Speak the perimeter password, announce in a clear voice that you have brought my daughter home safely and early, then return to your car -- there is no need for you to come inside. The camouflaged face at the window is mine.
These were MY rules.
Good luck with HER dad.

My dad had a Bugeye Sprite when I was about six. He used to haul four kids around in it. Two in the passenger seat, one on the transmission hump, and one sitting in the trunk compartment with her head poking through into the passenger compartment. Very interesting experience.

Communication-wise, I see myself as one of those little ultra-light airplanes.

1.) Arrange my schedule better so I have time to actually visit the Mudcat occasionally. 2.) Learn to accompany myself on guitar on a new song at least every two weeks, which would give me, what?, ummph ... about 25 new songs by the end of 2001. 2.5.) Learn math 3.) Learn to play in something beside the key of A. Or learn not to give a damp that I can't. 4.) Ride at least 3 century bike rides this year. 5.) Sell at least three major pieces of writing this year for enough money to call it an actual living. 6.) Enjoy my singlehood another year. 7.) Try to live down the nekkid picture of me in the Mudcat calendar ... 8.) Find some musicians in this area to make music with on a semi-regular basis. Maybe find someone(s) I can sing jazz standards/big band stuff with.

I've been invited to what promises to be a great New Year's Eve party at the home of a new friend. Even though I usually stay home on this particular night of the year -- my least favorite "holiday," a.k.a. "amateur's night" -- I'm going to go, party, drink a couple of glasses of bubbly and hope to be home before the bars close and all those amateurs start playing bumper cars on our nation's highways and byways. ...

I even bought a new outfit today. I have a date. Whoo-hoo!

HOPES for the New Year:
Quit smoking--I doubt it, I just can't see myself as a quitter.
Quit drinking--see above, but perhaps we can do moderation, been doing better in that regard.
Dust and vacum more often, instead of MudCat. (Ya think?)
Learn new tunes. (Possible...)
Practice more. (Possible....)
Get more $ for gigs (not probable)

Hmmm.....I'd of thought Peter was more along the lines of a '36 Cord, casting no aspertions of ageism, of course, just pure class.

I think I used to be a 1963 Ford Galaxie convertible, then I think I was a more mature Mustang, now, I think I am a horse and buggy, but I still like to rev it up a bit!

Rich, congratulations on your decision to buy a Gibson.
BTW, Matt, WAY TO GO KID! Now, have you passed HER fathers scrutiny? I'll dig up the old "Rules for Dating My Daughter" and post 'em for you.
The band is playing a gig for the city of St. Petersburg, Fl. on New Years Eve so we won't get to do a whole lot of celebrating. They are furnishing the PA and that's a relief.
I'm with Kendall on the resolutions bit. I'd just like to survive the new year with what's left of my health and play a little more music.

At midnight on new year's eve, everyone in the town goes to the square (that's outside the chipshop, for those who have been here) to sing auld lang syne, kiss each other, and make as much noise as possible.
I won't be able to join them, this year, because, due to the washed out bonfire night, everyone is going to let off fireworks as well.
I shall be sitting with a large, black, shivering dog on my knee, trying to cover his ears and make soothing noises.
Resolutions?, the usual. More exercise. less food, more practice, grow hair. etc, etc,etc........

My plans for the weekend involve a moderately serious attempt to remain intoxicated from Friday evening until bedtime on Monday. *L* Somehow I seem to have come up with parties every night.

I agree with the idea of not driving on Amateur Night. My car is just about the biggest thing on the road: 40 tons. The city bus for me. Let the drunks (okay, the OTHER drunks) kill themselves. Hopefully ONLY themselves.

Resolutions? Hopes? I'm perfect; what could I hope for?

Yeah! Right!

Quit smoking. Exercise more. Lose a few pounds. Finally (after over a year) get really and truly moved into my new place. *sigh*

JOKE: A college professor in class noted that in some languages a double negative remains a negative (Spanish). In others, a double negative becomes positive (English). But, he pointed out, there is no language in which a double positive becomes negative.

A voice rose from the back of the lecture hall: "Yeah, right!"

Helen, thanks for your tone! I was afraid you'd take it seriously- well, I don't mean 'seriously' actually, because I was serious, but since I no longer think of mispellings and mispronunciations and grammatical misusage as character defects, I hoped you'd hear the smile in my words.

My communication vehicle tends more to the Volvo- it's fairly dependable but definitely not fancy. But, oh! aren't some of the Rolls Royces on the Mudcat lovely! (On occasion, the Toyota too gets pretty eloquent)

Alice, I can relate to what you are saying about diverse interests and focussing. I've had that same problem, esp. in the past two years.

Our New Year's Eve will be, I am sure, quiet except when Rue comes in from celebrating with her friends. At least I don't think anyone in our new neighbourhood will be as stupid as those last year in the old one who shot off their gun at midnight.

Hopes for 2001

1. Dig myself out of debt.

2. Combine my art with love of Irish music by creating illustrations for lyrics like Gartan Mother's Lullaby and others. I hope to soon revise my website with low cost ($15) posters of the illustrations. My hope is to re-focus my work so all my many interests are not diluted by taking my time and energy in diverse directions. I've spread myself too thin, and focus is now the goal.

New Year's Resolutions:

1. Take the large cat photo off the goldfish tank so that the fish can finally get some sleep.

2. Renew my subscription to Field & Filosophy, especially after the series on Heidegger and deer decoys in the May issue ("Can There Be Substitutes for Being on Wheels?)

3. Stop buying 20-crayon size boxes in the vain hope that they will contain teal.

4. Avoid the "All U Can Eat" Buffet at the Shaker Community House.

5. Give up the "Souvenir Chad From Florida" idea, and sell the 22 newly purchased hole punches.

6. Vow to say nothing all year that compares 2001 to the movie of the same name, e.g. "Hey what about those Pan Am signs, ironic, eh?"

7. Don't donate to Food Bank by stuffing chocolate wafers into bank machine slots.

8. Ensure that I wake up alert in the new year by polishing bathroom floor excessively, and using top side of bath mat upside down. Walking on little suction cups will also provide interesting early morning sensation.

9. Organize collection of CDs by length of time it took to get the plastic wrapping off.

10. Finish paper on implications of cloned sheep for future of knitting industry. Tentative Title: "All's Wool That Ends Wool?"

I just went and pulled the piece of paper with my 2000 New Year's resolutions on it off the kitchen wall.

They were as follows:

1) More exercise.

2) Practice music more consistently

3) Use office time more effectively (which would, incidentally, involve spending less time on non-work-related internet sites....).

4) Eat less - especially refined sugar and white flour.

5) Throw out Stuff.

I realize that these resolutions are almost entirely untouched, and I can therefore re-use them for 2001. This makes for greater efficiency.

Peter.

On New Year's Eve we'll be having a mostly vegetarian potluck and lots of music with good friends. And a short drive home afterwards.

For the new year I'd like to get more organized about playing music -- between an intense full time job and a fairly full performing schedule, I find that I don't actually spend a lot of time playing music with other people in a non-performance situation. Or learning new music to take on stage. Or just practicing by myself. As I get older it gets easier to get home from work and just sit around or turn on the tube. This is not how I want to spend the rest of my life. I've been working on a couple of books of music that I would like to finish -- that probably means less time on the internet.

Helen, you mustn't say "isn't laying down". You can say "I lay down", you can say "I laid it down", you can say, How long has it lain here?" and you can say, "I will lie down", you can say, "He was lying down" and you can say, "I lie there frequently", but you can't say, "I was laying down".

I've always wanted to say that. (And yes, I did hear you.) I wouldn't call it language policing- it's too late for that. It's all part of the dumbing down of the language that Kendall mentioned.

The other day the News Ticker tape that runs across the top of my computer screen said: "Vandals Remove Lennon's Glasses from Statue." I didn't read the news item but what do you want to bet that they were talking about Lenin?

Now back to tonight's feature...

"Winston tastes good like a cigarette should" It's not the grammar that's wrong there, it's the punctuation.

"Winston tastes good - like a cigarette should" (It's still a lie of course.)

Kendall, it's even shown up in the crossword puzzles, too. I often come across improper grammar in them and it drives me nuts!

I had a very strict English teacher, Mrs. Worcester, who was also my Latin teacher, three years in a row. She was always pointing out popular culture's improper English. I will never forget her absolute disgust at the old slogan, Winston tastes good like a cigarette should. We went through all kinds of exercises in which she taught us it should be as.

Matt, I remember some while back you were pretty proud of your editing and grammar abilities; when we toot our own horn and then make a mistake, someone is bound to jump our ass. Have to learn to take it or be more careful.:-)

Guest, I am not a grammarian, but, language was invented so we could communicate, and, it grates on my nerves to hear things such as "Me and her went downtown, etc" These days, every other word is "LIKE" or "FUCK", and, it turns me off to what this feeble mind is trying to say. Such poor command of the language is boring to me.They simple dont have anything to say that I want to hear.

I used to catch hell for using improper grammar, now, it is considered "cool". Is this part of the dumbing down of America? I hear it all the time by TV personalities (news people) who should know better. example.."It would have been no problem if he WOULD HAVE kept quiet" Our own Senator Snowe said "Well, IRREGARDLESS... etc. AAAARRRGGG!!! There are so many butchered words, such as, Particularly, (pronounced with only 4 syllables) Nuclear, (new killer) Does anyone watch Jay Leno when he does his "Jay walking" thing? It is unbelieveable how stupid some of his targets are! Sorry, didnt mean to rave. Hell, I murder the language as a part of what I do...but, at least, I know better!

Notice, Matt R, how the grammarians pick up the scent as soon as you use the word petty in a sentence.

Sorry Matt, I'm with Guest on this one. It is always proper to put the other person first. In this case, it would be proper to say, ..to further my girlfriends, and MY etc. The way I was taught was, if you are not sure how to say it, take away the name of the other person, if you do that, it would read..to further ME whatever.

Ya' know Wesley, I gotta' tell ya' that your "little stinker" probably hasn't got to that point yet. The Poop Fairy generally arrives with the smell after about a month and THEN we'll see how young you feel!!!

When both Michael and Tris were young and we were doing foster care with young ones at the same time, I once had FIVE kids in diapers ehre at the same time. I may be a little out of practice now, but I once was known as "The Pampers Flash"......Fastest diaperer east of the Mississippi.

We'll be staying home this year. This is the year that I'll learn how to be a father to a great little kid - Brendan weighs 4 pounds today. I also hope to learn how to get my lazy thumb to behave so that I can play some of the blues tunes that I love. Along with lullabys I hope to teach my son all about Mississippi John Hurt so that he'll have something good to rebel against later.I'll be turning 50 in June. Somehow the rumor got started that I'm a young guy. Not true. But I think my little stinker just might keep me young at heart.

As the New Year approaches, there will be the inevitable questions about the time where you are. Awhile back, this became an issue and I developed a formula which you may find useful.

As y'all seem to be having a problem in your time conversions, allow me to step in and give you an easy conversion method. Your first problem is that you are operating on the Grenwich MEAN Time standard which is often just as mean as it's name indicates. So let's swap to the more user friendly Icelandic Kinder Gentler Time standard to do our conversion tables. This also does away with the silly concept of the International Date Line (not the 900 one) which foists upon us the ludicrous idea that, though it is tomorrow there, it is yesterday here...which in point of all evidence is patently untrue, as it is today everywhere. Now we can move along to our formula at a more logical and simpler pace.

Take the current surface area of Iceland and subtract the linear distance between there and Pago Pago. Divide this by the square root of Joe Offer. (I use Joe here as this will help him in his conquests with the opposite sex. Since very few males have a square root, his demand should be on the rise...so to speak. I have no "personal" knowledge of Joe's current situation but I'm inclined to believe he may be in need of a little help as I overheard a recent female companion describe Joe's equipment as a "melting fudgcicle, flanked by two jelly beans.") In any case, take this total and multiply it by the number of clocks in your home, less the number of dead wristwatches in your upper right hand dresser drawer. Add the difference total (in minutes) of the aforementioned clocks and divide by the average versus the time on your current wristwatch. You can now differentiate under the equal sign to calculate the value of X, that being the time where you live. Don't forget to use the value of pi as a constant...and since the value of pie at diners between Toronto and Buffalo is $1.75 (US), use that (1.75) instead of the more traditional 3.14159 figure.

Putting it all together you can now readily see that when it is 3:30 P.M., May 24, 1999 in Otswego, it's 2:48 P.M.,October 18, 1893 in Waycross, Georgia. Of course it's always that time in Waycross so don't be confused.

I hope that clears things up for everyone and we'll all be able to celebrate ou New Year together.

Spaw

I am going to a New Year's Party at someone else's house for the first time in years. I will be joining Bat Goddess and her Curmudgeon as well and Jeri and a number of their friends. I don't know what is planned but I'm taking my guitar and bastard banjo just in case some music breaks out. I'll need something for self defense.

My plans for the year: Sing and play music, see my older daughter off to Spain or England, sing and play music, meet more Mudcatters, sing and play music, see my younger daughter into her Senior year in high school, sing and play music, get back on the water, sing and play music, lose weight (or gain height), sing and play music, maybe even fall in love.

I have 5 things I want to accomplish this year.

1 - Visit this site at least one hour per day.

2 - go through my song colection of about 2,000 songs, eliminate the duplicates and post the remainder to the DT.

3 - Do more non-paying gigs for the local schools, seniors' homes and libraries etc.

4 - Be the best husband, father and grandfather that I can be

5 - Get a job

Sorry !, ignore # 5 - 4 resolutions is enough for anybody.

Happy New Years Everyone.

I have the same kind of wild night that Banjer described! We toast in the new year with our friends in the UK (6 pm, Eastern Standard Time), then settle down for some Forced Family Fun in a game of Life, Scrabble, or Monopoly. Early to bed, but awakened by the fireworks going on a mile away in the center of town. If we sit on the dining room floor and look out the sliding doors we can just see them- and then back to bed. A coupla visits and open houses on New Years day.
My hopes for 2001 are complicated. My spouse and I hope to figure out where we're going in a difficult situation. That will point me into the next decision- to try to sell the house, and whether to buy land to the east or west of town. Decision #1 will virtually answer decision #2.
Oh, and definitely fiddle lessons. It is time.

New Years revolutions? Count me in.Now where did I put that machine gun?

Well, Spaw, I used to have ferrets. And weasles. And raccoons, and skunks, and foxes, and bobcats, and ring-tailed cats, and collared peccaries, and squirrels, and flying squirrels, and... Well, you get the picture. I used to be a wildlife rehabilitation worker. Then I was a zookeeper. I found that stinking of animal shit is not a good way to enlarge one's social circle (other than with other people who stink of animal shit.)

Any other advice?

Spaw, how graphic! But I do know what you mean.

I want to do pretty much the same thing I did this year but with greater awareness.

I also want to spend less time on the computer. (sob, sob, sob I would have so much more time available each day if I spent only, say, one hour in the morning and one hour in the evening on the computer. That, of course, means the internet, and that, of course, mostly means the Mudcat. I would still spend time writing- that's not slacking.

But I keep negotiating in my head the amount of time I can spend at the 'Cat...I know no one else has that problem.

I'm sorry about your troubles, Nathan.

My very good friend, Ela, who lives in Maine (U. of M. at Orono) will be coming to visit me and spend New Year's Eve with me (weather permitting). My friendship with Ela is one good lasting thing I got out of my second to last significant relationship (with her father). It's always a treat to get to spend time with her.

For 2001. Boy, that's a tough one. I honestly don't know in which direction I need to move during the upcoming year. So I guess my first goal is to try to get some clarity about what comes next.

Wish me luck.

Ahh.....Now here's a thread! The first New Year's thread and my name is in it! What an honor!!!

Kat, before I make any commitments to the New Year, I just want to get out of this one in a good mood, so my first goal starts New Year's Eve when I promise I will not rent any depressing movies as Karen and I did a few years ago. We were so excited to get two of the year's blockbusters that we hadn't seen for that night! So coming home after our NY Eve dinner and a few festivities with friends, we sat down and watched Schindler's List followed by Philadelphia. Fortunately, we keep no guns in the house or we would have blown our brains out. This year I think we'll watch 3 that the kids got for Christmas.........Pokemon 2000, Toy Story 2, and Big Construction Equipment in Action. The worst that can happen is that I'll kick in the TV, go to sleep, or go out New Year's Day and buy a bulldozer.
