Thanks for announcing this! I'm a couple of neighborhoods away from the University in Seattle and will probably transfer there after a year or two.

I'll look foward to see anyone who's playing!

Benjamin

CraigS — Actually there was a well-known VD clinic called St. James Infirmary in Greenville, S.C. and I came across an article (sorry, can't remember where or when) that said it was the place referred to in the song. I don't know if it still exists.

The song, of course, is a blues version of the old (English?) ballad The Unfortunate Rake and can also be found in cowboy versions in various areas of the U.S.

BTW, my wife did her nursing and midwifery training at LGI. She's from just outside Hull. Small world, eh?

This music is to good not to be inspired by and play.. Robert played from the heart was inspired by thoughs before him and has inspired others after him to do the same. No copying is realy possable with great art only inspiration.. That hast to bring good luck to all involved.. All the best Guy <><><>><>><><><>ps sorry about the redundentcy around the word inspired<><><><><>< Ha

As a notorious Robert Johnson impersonator, I can definitely say that he did not write a lot of the songs he wrote. The ones he did "write" are distinguishable by bringing bad luck on the performer, if performed faithfully. Even if the man offered me an awful lot of money, I don't think I'd be persuaded to play this gig, let alone send him a disc. On the other subject, what about the classic non-English blues line "I was down to Saint James' Infirmary" ? I might add that the only St. James' Infirmary I actually know of is in Leeds, Yorkshire, England, where one is more likely to hear the sentiment expressed as "gerrat 'ospital" than otherwise!

Probably from some place where they say "go to hospital" instead of "go to the hospital." Took me a while to get used to that when I came to Canada, but then I moved to Windsor and it's not really in Canada and they speak fairly normally around here.

Now, now, Guest, my dictionary gives one meaning of "write" as "to communicate in writing, write a letter or note to" with the example of "write her before you go."

Bloody..?..?..say, where you from?

Correct English would be "Write to this guy."
