Subject: RE: Computer-problems From: Amergin Date: 19 Jan 01 - 02:41 AM Do you ever sleep, Jon? |
Subject: RE: Computer-problems From: Jon Freeman Date: 19 Jan 01 - 02:31 AM Bert, you are right of course. I am often online and using the internet for more than 3 hrs in one go. PalTalk is a common example for me. Jon |
Subject: RE: Computer-problems From: GUEST,S(ergio) A(lguim) Date: 18 Jan 01 - 10:39 PM Thank you for a lot of interesting comments and answers. In fact my disconnecting-problems seem to be solved without I doing anything ! Maybe/probably a lot of other persons have complained to either the Internet-Provider or the telephone-company. Today I have not had one single disconnecting-problem. It wouldnt surprise me if there has been something wrong with server of the Internet-company. Yes, its a free internet-service. I dont pay anything, but I also dont see any commercials. |
Subject: RE: Computer-problems From: Bernard Date: 18 Jan 01 - 05:50 PM A noisy telephone line is often the culprit - ring the telephone company, tell them the problem, and they will alter the 'gain balance' on the line. When you use if for ordinary calls, can you hear any background noise other than someone's telly, bodily functions or children? One other thing - have you got 'call waiting'? If so, you must disable it whilst surfing!! |
Subject: RE: Computer-problems From: Mrs.Duck Date: 18 Jan 01 - 05:02 PM We had Rebol on the old computer which we set up to reead a page every few minutes. We haven't installed it on here yet as Geoff wanted to do a complete system backup of Windows ME before we started doing anything but has found that virtually impossible so far! Seems microsoft don't put a backup program on preinstalled computers! Obviously want to sell it to us again if a problem occurs. |
Subject: RE: Computer-problems From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 18 Jan 01 - 04:56 PM My ISP cuts you off off you don't do anything for four minutes - but as Grab says, there are programmes tyat run aeround in the background doing things that keep them off yor back, if for example you are writing a long post online.
I've got one called NetMonitor which I got free on a magazine CDROM; here's a link to another Activa DUN Meter - th eversion on the link cost $15 - there's a free version on another CDROM I've got (and it does other clever stuff as well). You should be able to find a free version of something that does the trick without much trouble. |
Subject: Dang! From: Clinton Hammond Date: 18 Jan 01 - 04:23 PM Only 3 hours?? That sucks... Get cable and be connected 24/7!!! |
Subject: RE: Computer-problems From: Sorcha Date: 18 Jan 01 - 04:18 PM Hey, don't pick on Jon!! Many's the time I thought I closed out everything and disconnected, only to get up in the morning, move the mouse, and find last evening's Mudcat screen.........good thing I have TRUE unlimited acess and cable modem, LOL! |
Subject: RE: Computer-problems From: Bert Date: 18 Jan 01 - 12:56 PM Why am I not surprised that 'Jon' would find out that there's a THREE HOUR maximum connection time ;-) |
Subject: RE: Computer-problems From: Grab Date: 18 Jan 01 - 07:31 AM As Jon says, some ISPs cut you off if there's no traffic for a few minutes - I have this problem. Apparently you can get software which sits in the background and keeps the link ticking over if you're not doing anything, but I've not found it yet. Actually I've not been bothered to look, but anyway... :-) Grab. |
Subject: RE: Computer-problems From: Amergin Date: 18 Jan 01 - 02:26 AM S.A., sometimes this can happen during the peak internet hours, such as from about 6PM to about 9 or 10.....what happens is that the server gets overloaded with people trying to get on or already on and sometimes folks get bumped offline. Is this a smaller local type ISP? Or it could have something to do with the browser or related software...Do you have windows? If so you can go here to download any updates you might need..... Also it could be something that blocks the easy transmission of information being passed over the net, such as a firewall. I used to have one on my pc some months ago, but it kept slowing things down so much, that I would get bumped off....Firewalls are a bit of a two edged sword anyways...Yes, they can prevent folks from getting into your files, but unless you carry sensitive information on your pc there is no need to have one....The problem is is that they also tend to alter your registry and can screw up your pc pretty good....

Subject: RE: Computer-problems From: Jon Freeman Date: 18 Jan 01 - 01:50 AM Some ISPs operate time outs. My last ISP operated 2 types: 1: A maximum connection time of 3 hours. 2: A cut off after so many minutes of inactivity this could mean that if I was simply reading a long thread here, I could get cut off because there was no data being sent to and from my ISP. If suspect that this might be your problem, try tuning into one of the Mudcat Radio Archives anything else that should ensure there is always some data flowing. It is possible to keep pinging your ISP at periodic intervals but I know that my last ISP did not allow that so it is probably best to choose something that at least makes it look as if there is some legitimate activity going on. Subject: RE: Computer-problems From: Giac Date: 17 Jan 01 - 06:13 PM Hi, GUEST,S.A. - I've just gone through a couple of months of the same thing. Very frustrating. Finally changed ISPs and the problem stopped. The provider, which had been free, started offering a premium service, for a fee. They tried several enticements (reduced rates, etc.), then started reducing service to those still using the free service. No free tech support, constant disconnects, only one dialup line, even MORE advertising. Once I changed to different provider, everthing was resolved. That might not be your problem, because, as the guys said, it could be any number of things. Good Luck! Giac |
Subject: RE: Computer-problems From: Zebedee Date: 17 Jan 01 - 05:52 PM I remember having a similar problem a while back. My ISP suggested that I needed a new modem. Before I got round to buying one, I moved to a new flat, and the problem stopped. I presume that my phone line was 'dirty' in the old place. As Joe says, it could be lots of things. Ed |
Subject: RE: Computer-problems From: Joe Offer Date: 17 Jan 01 - 05:36 PM Hi, S.A. there are lots of things that could be causing the problem, both on your computer and at your Internet Service Provider (ISP). I'd suggest the first thing to try is to call your ISP and ask them for help. Good luck. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: Computer-problems From: GUEST,S.A. Date: 17 Jan 01 - 05:20 PM Very often last time I have been disconnected from internet. I get totally out of internet, so then I have to use the telephone-call-up again. This is very frustrating. I use Microsoft Explorer 5.0. I have turned off the automatically disconnection after a certain number of minutes, but its still not ok. What can be wrong , and what shall I do ? |
