Uncle Jacque-

What tune do you use? I'm not sure how the "We're home at last; home at last!" part goes.

You'll have to attend one of our shanty swaps again. How about planning to join us in Portsmouth on May 15th? I can pick you up at 40 Salem St. at 2 pm sharp.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

I should have looked at your link, MMario. But I don't like Sweet Betsy or Villikens for it.

Lyr. Add: HOMEWARD BOUND
W. F. Warren, music C. F. Harrington

Out on an ocean all boundless we ride,
We're homeward bound, homeward bound;
Tossed on the waves of a rough restless tide,
We're homeward bound, homeward bound;
Far from the safe, quiet harbour we rode,
Seeking our Father's celestial abode,
Promise of which on us each he bestowed;
We're homeward bound, homeward bound.

Wildly the storm sweeps us on as it roars,
We're homeward bound, homeward bound;
Look, yonder lie the bright heavenly shores,
We're homeward bound, homeward bound;
Steady, oh pilot, stand firm at the wheel,
Steady, we soon shall outweather the gale:
Oh, how we fly 'neath the loud creaking sail,
We're homeward bound, homeward bound.

Into the harbour of heaven now we glide,
We're home at last, home at last;
Softly we drift on its soft silver tide,
We're home at last, home at last,
Glory to God, all our dangers are o'er;
We stand secure on the glorified shore;
Glory to God, we will shout evermore;
We're homeward bound, homeward bound.

A glorious melody to this hymn; hear midi at Cyberhymnal.
Homeward Bound
Popular during the Civil War era on both sides of the conflict, printed on broadsheets by Thomas G. Doyle, Baltimore, and others (see American Memory, Civil War Song Sheets).

First verse the same as that posted by Uncle Jacque, but his other verses are quite different.
"Words by Rev. W. F. Warren, before 1863." Music C (Calvin?) S. Harrington (Cyberhymnal).

Uncle Jacque, do you have the music for that? I would LOVE to get my hands on it! Can you work something out for a fellow New Englander?

Just checked Digitrad DB: There's 2 by this title, but not the same one!

This song found in a Hymnal dated 1864 issued by the Portland (ME) Seaman's Bethel (Chapel), presumadly to a Sailor. I have sung it at memorial services, and it seems to be appropriate & well recieved.

"HOMEWARD BOUND"
Lyrics
From: "Songs of Zion", American Tract Soc., 1864

1.
Out on an ocean all boundless we ride,
We're homeward bound, homeward bound.
Tossed on the waves of a rough, restless tide,
We're homeward bound, homeward bound.
Far from the safe quiet harbor we've rode,
Seeking our Father's celestial abode,
Promise of which on us each he bestowed;
We're homeward bound, homeward bound.

2.
Wildly, the storm sweeps us on as it roars,
We're homeward bound, homeward bound.
Look, yonder lie the bright heavenly shores,
We're homeward bound, homeward bound.
Steady, O pilot, stand firm at the wheel;
Steady, we soon shall outweather the gale;
Oh how we fly 'neath the loud creaking sail:
We're homeward bound, homeward bound.

3.
We'll tell the world as we journey along,
We're homeward bound, homeward bound.
Try to persuade them to enter our throng,
We're homeward bound, homeward bound.
Come trembling sinner, forlorn and opprest,
Join in our number, Oh come and be blest;
Journey with us to the mansions of rest:
We're homeward bound, homeward bound.

4.
Into the harbor of heaven we glide,
We're home at last; home at last!
Softly we drift on its bright silver tide,
We're home at last; home at last!
Glory to God, all our dangers are o'er;
We stand secure on the glorified shore:
"Glory to God" we will shout evermore;
We're home at last; home at last.

Line breaks added. --JoeClone
