Aftear having my Big Baby for almost a year now I still think that it is one of the best guitars that you can get for your money. Mine looks great and it plays even better. Any comments for the mudcat gallery?

53 - I too have my guitar handy so that I can play a couple of songs before I go to work. The trouble is that it is making me constantly late for work!

Have tried the Big Baby - very impressed -
I own a baby that I bought at the Manchester (UK) Guitar show in 2000 - a Music shop from Clitheroe had a "few" on "special offer" with back pack soft case for £150 - yes £150.... and although I wasn't in the market for another guitar I just couldn't leave it at that price - thinking I could use it in "Nashville tuning" and release my Tacoma backpacker - sorry Tacoma the Taylors too good a sound in normal tuning at the bass end to be put into Nashville!!
It's the only "backpacker" I have recommended that I think is playable in sessions - and along with my short scale 5 string banjo goes on all my trips, Brill!!!

I have seen no comments lately on the Taylor Big Baby... So I will renew the thread myself. Just to say, Bob enjoyed mine so well for playing along with the recordings on our 'Jukebox' that he asked for and received one for Father's Day. It was the highlight of the family get-together. After it was opened he and his son, David (who's part of a local band Sol in Myrtle Beach, SC) played together for awhile. It was great. They were the start and heart of Midnite Run - an East Coast Touring Country/Classic Rock Band through the 90s.

Bob, Rhythm Man, says a Martin backpacker should be perfect for outings, camping, etc. Cumberome, hardshell cases would just get in the way. Also, you wouldn't have a lot of money tied up in it like you would a Taylor.

He says it is a good guitar for the money. (I can't believe I'm hearing this from a "Gibson" Man like he has always been.)

You must do a lot of shows, to need a guitar to travel easily.

Maybe someday, but at least I've got 3 guitars which are just as good. Last week I played a koa Taylor at Elderly (Lansing Michigan) which was maybe the best Taylor I've ever played. Nice to see something good coming out of the factories! Still, I could use something which travels easily.

Ah, too bad - maybe someday... I can hardly believe I own one! But the price was just right for us.

You are right about the gig bag. I'd like a hardshell but probably won't get one soon. It isn't as important for me, since I will mostly be keeping my guitar at home. I don't always paack it away at night either, as I like playing a few minutes before work some mornings so I leave it on a stand.

I attribute a faster start learning guitar this time (than when I took lessons 15 years ago) to 1. having the teacher for my husband (or should I say my husband for a teacher - but he's the same teacher who was just a friend last time.) Did that make since yet? 2. playing along with the 'original' recording on my computer - downloaded mostly from Napster. 3. not being busy raising a family this time!

Is it true that Taylor isn't shipping the Big Baby with a hardshell case? I've heard that, based on the preferences of Baby owners for gigbags, Taylor will do the same for the Big Baby. I missed my chance at a good secondhand Baby with hardshell, and I wonder if Big Baby owners will be a different market and need the hardshell. In a perfect world I'd own both, but I own neither. Alas...

If you are confused by the change from Rhythm Man to 53, you can be enlightened by reading the current thread "FYI Rhythm Man and ..."

I, 53, the Big Baby (and proud new owner of the Big Baby!) am the wife of Rhythm Man. It is I who got into Mudcatting in the first place. Sometimes when I read messages (as a guest) to Bob, RM, he would want to give advise about guitar and so the name Rhythm Man was begun.

When I decided to join I signed up using his name and that nickname, but I am the one who really does the most stuff in the site so I have changed it to my own membership.

We really like the Taylor Big Baby. But Bob is really a "Gibson" and "Takamine" man. He also owns an '89 Fender Strat+, which he used on stage as well as the Takamine.

I ran into a Big Baby at the music store and played it for awhile. I found it as easy playing as all those other Taylor guitars and it also has a good sound. I think it would be a great first guitar especially for a smaller person. It has the feel of a "real" guitar whereas the Baby Taylor is so small that it does not have the heft of a regular guitar, giving it a toy-like feel.

whoops. sorry about the first post. slip of the finger. I played a BIG BABY while selecting a baby for travel. I thought it the equal of larger guitars and I think I will buy one for my son this Christmas. A fine small guitar in other words and a great value.
