Subject: RE: BS: Any Good Ideas For Mother's Day? From: Mrs.Duck Date: 15 May 01 - 01:45 PM Mothering Sunday is always celebrated near to Lady day which is the 25th March.. As this can sometimes coincide with Eastertide the tradition of the Mothering Sunday simnel cake has on occasions been confused with other Easter traditions. |
Subject: RE: BS: Any Good Ideas For Mother's Day? From: KitKat Date: 14 May 01 - 03:07 PM My mother's favourite Mother's Day gift was a big bunch of sweet smelling lilac my sister gave her when she (my sister) was four. As for me, now I'm a mum myself, being cooked a meal, a bottle of really nice wine - or diamonds would do! Pat |
Subject: RE: BS: Any Good Ideas For Mother's Day? From: Wavestar Date: 14 May 01 - 11:58 AM I've just researched it, trying to figure out what you all mean by this Mothering Sunday bit. And yes, Simnel cake was for Mothering Sunday, not Easter. I just called my mother overseas and told her I loved her, and got a chance to talk for a little while. I've got gifts for her, but I'll bring them back with me, and can't say what they are here, or she'd see! -J |

From: GUEST,Mr Red@Library Date: 14 May 01 - 10:32 AM bert Simnel cake - brain fade It might have been Easter but I wouln't swear to it, will research that again but a present for mum it was I often do things like this at the Folk Club Hot Cross buns on Good Fri, Valentine Apples Feb 14 - and cohabittee cakes (Tea cakes) when the last SO moved in. Yes it always was Mothering Sunday when I were a kid. |
Subject: RE: BS: Any Good Ideas For Mother's Day? From: GUEST Date: 10 May 01 - 03:58 PM My very first Mother's Day gift (or was it my birthday?) was a lovely lucite pendant with a marijuana leaf encased in it. My son (almost 9) knew I would love the "delicate" flower inside. Next day as I left for work he was devastated when I didn't have it on. Had to wear it and hide it for a while. |
Subject: RE: BS: Any Good Ideas For Mother's Day? From: Sorcha Date: 10 May 01 - 02:20 PM Oh kat, how wonderful!! Still like my paint, etc. You're right, surprise flowers are one thing, as a Mother's Day gift, another. |
Subject: RE: BS: Any Good Ideas For Mother's Day? From: katlaughing Date: 10 May 01 - 02:14 PM The cake story reminds me of one time when my son, at about 7 or 8 years old, decided to bake me a cake for a special day. He arranged for my girlfriend around the corner to keep me visiting at her house while he went about it. Every once in awhile he'd call her, unbeknownst to me, for help with the instructions. When it finally came time and I was allowed to go home, there he was in the doorway with an angel food cake, which he had poured into a flat cookie sheet and baked. While baking, it oozed over the side and started an oven fire. He knew to throw baking soda on the fire, SO the cake was covered with baking soda. He'd taken a stick and painted a "we love you" picture which he mounted like a flag in the middle of the very flat cake. Of course I had to try a bite or two and HAD to say it was the best cake I'd ever eaten, even while puckering abit from the soda! It is still a very cherished memory in our family. I have a darling picture of his great big smile as he presented me with it. kat |
Subject: RE: BS: Any Good Ideas For Mother's Day? From: gnu Date: 10 May 01 - 12:32 PM I buy two cards. One joke card for the get-together and the one I will give her before the get together, in private. I have something else on the go, of course, but it's not novel... I are a ingineer, so I build stuff and Mother's day is a great excuse to build something big - even bigger than last year. |
Subject: RE: BS: Any Good Ideas For Mother's Day? From: GUEST,Karen Date: 10 May 01 - 12:28 PM Sorry Les, but I'm one of those "ignorant Americans". Mothering Sunday is not a term I'm familiar with although your comment DID cause me to look up the definition. See? Who says BS threads are useless drivel? I learned something today. I'm leaning toward a home-made gift basket now filled with items my mother would appreciate.... |
Subject: RE: BS: Any Good Ideas For Mother's Day? From: Bert Date: 10 May 01 - 12:07 PM Hmmm, I always though that Simnel Cake was an Easter thing. |
Subject: RE: BS: Any Good Ideas For Mother's Day? From: Les from Hull Date: 10 May 01 - 12:02 PM My mother (bless her!) would not like to see all this discussion of Mother's Day. Doesn't anyone still have the old tradition of Mothering Sunday? And haven't we already had it? I love the ideas, though. Les |
Subject: RE: BS: Any Good Ideas For Mother's Day? From: GUEST,Mr Red@Library Date: 10 May 01 - 10:14 AM a simnel cake traditional on mothers day the story goes:- son & daughter decide to bake a cake for mom and argue on how to make - bake or boil compromise was struck on two layers (one of each method) their names were Simon & Nell I did this at 0the Somers TFC (Worcester Fri Albion) and wrote a song about the story everyone remembers the cake (baked by someone else) song was less than memorable! Ho hum. I wonder if they argued over whose layer was on top? |
Subject: RE: BS: Any Good Ideas For Mother's Day? From: SINSULL Date: 10 May 01 - 10:00 AM A sincere "I love you" works for me. |
Subject: RE: BS: Any Good Ideas For Mother's Day? From: GUEST,Karen Date: 10 May 01 - 09:40 AM Gee, thanks BillD. I know I'm refreshed after a good night's sleep! :-) Thank you for the suggestions so far. The contribution to a charitable cause would be right up my mother's alley as would the musical CDs and the thought of just spending time with her. Luckily for me she lives close by. Notice how I'm avoiding the idea of cleaning or doing chores for her *BG*. Hey, I did them as a kid! She got her money's worth out of me already. Amergin, what a lovely thing to write but even I can't stoop to stealing your heart-felt message to your mother. Hmmm...maybe I could bend it a bit?.... |

Subject: RE: BS: Any Good Ideas For Mother's Day? From: katlaughing Date: 09 May 01 - 11:49 PM LOL, cute, Nathan, very cute! BTW, your earlier words were beautiful. Any mother would love getting such sentiments, even from her bratty son.:-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Any Good Ideas For Mother's Day? From: Amergin Date: 09 May 01 - 11:45 PM or better yet you can do as kat suggested...give her handmade coupons and then move as far away as possible.... |
Subject: RE: BS: Any Good Ideas For Mother's Day? From: Bill D Date: 09 May 01 - 11:44 PM learn a song for her and sing it |
Subject: RE: BS: Any Good Ideas For Mother's Day? From: katlaughing Date: 09 May 01 - 11:42 PM I got flowers, today! Totally out of the blue, as my kids usually just don't do things like that, and I loved them. If they were an every year kind of thing, I don't know if I'd like them as well; a lot of it was the sheer surprise. On the other hand, I love cut flowers! (Sorry, Sorcha!) If you live close by, you could always give her your own handmade coupons redeemable for any manner of chores she hates to do, that you could perform for her. My kids did that one year and it was a lot of fun and very thoughtful. Things such as mowing the lawn; doing the laundry; running errands; grocery shopping, etc. What about a musical gift? Any CD's she's been wanting or a concert she'd enjoy going to? OR, an instrument she wants or lessons? The pampering: massage, etc. is GOOD, though...I'd have to sya that'd be tops, even over flowers, for me.:-) kat |
Subject: RE: BS: Any Good Ideas For Mother's Day? From: GUEST,mgarvey@pacifier.com Date: 09 May 01 - 10:56 PM how about some flowers and a contribution to an agency that helps children, like Unicef. mg |
Subject: RE: BS: Any Good Ideas For Mother's Day? From: Sorcha Date: 09 May 01 - 10:45 PM I'm getting paint, carpet, drapes, etc. Nothing better as far as I am concerned. DON'T just bring me flowers and blow me off........ I hate cut flowers. They die, and then what do I have? "Dinner Out" is not much better.....I eat, evacuate the Dinner, and what do I have? Again, not much. I much prefer real things, like paint and carpet. |
Subject: RE: BS: Any Good Ideas For Mother's Day? From: Amergin Date: 09 May 01 - 10:28 PM Well, last year...i was too cheap to buy her anything...so I wrote a little something....wonder if it will serve again this year.... My Thanks My thanks to my mother who for 25 years, has held me, comforted me, given me the strength I need. My thanks to my mother for being there, holding me in her arms when I told her my secrets, and cried out the pain of twenty years. My thanks to my mother who in the darkest days of her depression stumbled around in the gloom making sure we were fed, nurtured and loved. My thanks to my mother who held tightly to my hand, reassuring me of her presence, as I swam through the murky depths of my own despair. My thanks to my mother for making me into who I am today. nathan

Subject: RE: BS: Any Good Ideas For Mother's Day? From: GUEST,Dancing Mom Date: 09 May 01 - 10:11 PM One year my stepfather took my Mom to a local restaurant under the guise of the two of them going out to dinner. Was she ever surprised when my two brothers and I walked into the restaurant, sat down and said "Happy Mother's Day" and treated her and stepfather to dinner. None of us live nearby, and one brother lives out of state. Just seeing all three of us together made her holiday. Sharon |
Subject: RE: BS: Any Good Ideas For Mother's Day? From: Gary T Date: 09 May 01 - 09:51 PM Gift certificate for some sort of pampering--a massage, makeover, manicure/pedicure, etc. Bonus points if the practioner comes to your mom so she can enjoy it at home. |
Subject: Any Good Ideas For Mother's Day? From: GUEST,Karen Date: 09 May 01 - 09:26 PM It's almost here again....Mother's Day! Does anyone want to share their absolute best present given or received on Mother's Day? I'm running low on ideas on what to get mine. Yes, I can go with the old standards: flowers, music or a good book. But I'd like to think up something new. Or rather, I'd like to steal something new from one of you! Help me out, please!!!! |
