Further to Dave's post, it's on 'You can't fool the fat man', under the title 'Willie o' Winsbury, where it states that it's from Maud Karpeles' Songs of Newfoundland.

It's a version of Willie Of Winsbury called Thomas of Winsbury. I think it was collected in the Appalachian Mountains by Maud Karpeles.

There's a text version here (probably the original if the version used by various singers including DB) in F. W. Moorman's Songs of the Ridings. It's also in DT, so you can compare the two.

No, I haven't got "Dalesmans" and have been reduced to the conclusion that it's either on a sampler or possibly a tape of a radio broadcast . .

It's SO frustrating . . The quote given at the top has lodged that snatch of the song in my brain - in Burland's dulcet tones - but I can't recall any more of it!

I've checked, the Trailer self titled, the two Rubber and Hedgehog Pie, it ain't there. Have you got "Dalesman's", George? Mine seams to have gone walkabout.

I have this from a glossary of Songs of Miramachi on symbolic meanings of the color green:

This is a color which has many meanings...To the Irish, it is a patriotic color, to the Scots, an unlucky one.(I might add that traditionally it was considored unlucky by the Irish, being associated with faeries, it was used by the Young Irelanders as a nationalist color) The color is disparaged in the proverb, "Married in green, ashamed to be seen" which makes green symbolic of lost innocence. Well I ploughed through the vinyl collection last night without finding it (yet I can hear a snatch of Dave singing it in my head).

I'll have another look over the weekend . . I'm intrigued, now.

A little more information would be helpful, as there are a good few songs which start out like this.  Do you remember any more of it, or the name of the record you heard it on?  If it was a live performance, that probably reduces the chance of identifying it properly.  At a pinch, you could always get in touch with Dave himself; contact details are at  Guestlist
