Jon said, "if there were a small number of people who enjoy gardening here..."

ahem...we are many!

Well Guest,

I haven't any great interest in running a forum and I certainly do not need the forum or even to pay for web space to learn ASP. ASP runs quite happily on Personal Web Server which I can run locally on my own PC for free.

Where you do have a point, although it is lower on my priorities than trying to provide something useful ,is that I am enjoying trying to develop in ASP and being in a situation where you can get some user feedback is nice and certainly is another reason for my interest.

Jon

Be honest Jon,

The main reason that you set up the forum was to allow yourself a way of learning asp, and to try running a forum for yoursef.

Nothing wrong with that, but honesty is always a good idea

Jon set up a forum where Mudcatters can discuss non-music stuff they are interested in, and it has various sections moderated by various people. It's experimental.

This should take you there:

Tig the Annexe is a forum I started. The idea behind it was to allow an area for Mudcatters to chat on a more frequent basis on other subjects, e.g. if there were a small number of people who enjoy gardening here, I could have a small forum there where people could discuss that in more depth or on a more frequent basis than would be the usual here (I mean I could have several gardening threads going without any complaints/ feelings/ whatever over number of a specific type of thread getting in the way of music).

The forum can be found at http://www.jonbanjo.com/forum. It is very much experimental 1. In finding out whether it really does satisfy a useful purpose and 2. I am trying to implement a couple of new ideas and am developing (almost) live in response to any user suggestions.

Jon

My computer has been out of action for a week or so and I'm behind the times. What is the Annex and how do I use it?

I wasn't even thinking about it being successful at the moment but yes Carol, I agree.

I also think that the site's own reliability problems can not have helped matters. Hopefully that one is resolved now though.

BTW, it interests me how these things work. I deal with a UK Web Hosting company that themselves deal with larger companies and sell on the smaller shared hosting solutions. I was hosted on a London UK based server. The new server they have put me on is in Florida!

People are pretty distracted right now. I wouldn't judge whether or not the Annexe is being successful until people start to get back to some kind of feeling of normalcy.

Keep up the good work Jon!

It's a shame more people don't use it, but your posts have got me hooked on running my own little server, and learning asp

Expect a slew of questions, in the next week or so!

Sorry to post another thread here but it is the only way I can be sure people read this.

The Annexe was put on a new server on Sunday and this change involved a DNS change (mapping jonbanjo.com to an actual IP address).

A number of browsers, even when set to check new pages every time are exhibiting weird caching behavour and picking up pages from the new server as well as (in some cases now non-existant pages) pages on the old server as well as errors caused by the old pages being found.

As far as I can make out, everything is OK on the new server and the DNS changes have gone through but it will probably be necessary to clear your browsers cache before the site operates correctly.

Jon
