Subject: RE: Help: Weird Fiddles From: Dave the Gnome Date: 01 Oct 01 - 04:53 AM I think Donuel would appreciate the recommendation, it might cheer him up a bit! See BS: Trolling & flaming and look for his posting dated Sept 30. DtG |
Subject: RE: Help: Weird Fiddles From: Cantrip Date: 30 Sep 01 - 02:38 PM Never tried a hardanger, but I'm working on that. I tried a Bridge electric just last month, Sarah. Nice stuff, I gotta say, but it's an accoustic I'm after just now. I've got a Violectra electric 6-string, but you don't half get some funny looks if you show up to a session with one of those... Right 'nuff, doug, have you heard his octave violins? |
Subject: RE: Help: Weird Fiddles From: dougboywonder Date: 30 Sep 01 - 12:23 PM Yeah, the coolest violin maker in the world, and probably the guy who made whatever wierd fiddle you've seen is Tim Phillips, of Powys. He makes 'em with no corners you know. |
Subject: RE: Help: Weird Fiddles From: GUEST,Heather Hayes Date: 30 Sep 01 - 05:54 AM I think Hardangers only have 8: E,A, D, A (from highet to lowest), and then 4 resonating strings below the fingerboard, which, I think, are DDAA. At least 2 strings are braided to give a percussive effect. (DDZZZZ DDZZZZZZZ) |

Subject: RE: Help: Weird Fiddles From: Cantrip Date: 29 Sep 01 - 10:37 PM Thanks, Sorcha! There's some bonny stuff there, all right. If you're interested, a good one I did find was www.timsviolins.supanet.com |

Subject: Weird Fiddles From: Cantrip Date: 29 Sep 01 - 07:07 PM Hi all. I'm new to the Mudcat experience, and in need of a spot of help. I'm looking for a new fiddle, and my eye (and ear) have been caught by some of the odd beasties I'm starting to see - hourglass bodies, 5 strings, that sort of thing - but haven't been able to turn up many makers' names. Can anybody out there help? |
