LTS - I wasn't serious about my post on the room being closed. Yesterday several folks, myself included, were appearing to just have fun with giving each other a hard time. It was in that vein that I made the post I did.

Rory - you are most certainly correct - I could open the room. Bigchuck gave me the admin code so all I have to do is figure out how to do that piece. I've only been to the Mudact room once and it was a hoot! I'm mostly old time country and train tunes and it was fun to "perform" there. Every one was incredibly nice even though I was struggling with extreme nervousness. Made me feel right at home.

I think that old news on this is out of my experience so will not go there. I don't really care what happened in the past. I'll try to learn the means to open the room and if it isn't open - will open it when I am there. I'll throw a post at this forum so folks will know.

Besides I have figured out my sound issues and can be heard now! And that can be a good or a bad thing!!

Steve

I've missed hearing the PalTalk music this summer. Now that it's cooler and my life if getting back (just a little) to a routine, maybe I can join in more often. The few times I've connected lately, I've gone for the rooms with any kind of live music...but I really miss hearing Mudcatters sing. I think I've said this before...I've learned sooooooo many new songs that I'll always treasure. And yes, I still have THE LIST!

Most weeks I try to get in to the Snug by 9pm, or soon thereafter, but it's not always possible.

Last night was exceptional, because it seems that all the usual suspects wanted an early night, so when I got there at 11pm, Jock had closed down. It's all right for me to sit around with the room open, I have 24/7 cable modem internet access, but anyone, like Jock, using PSTN is almost certainly being caned for call charges.

As to other rooms, well, I must admit I would appreciate some guidance as to what other rooms are worth entering. I have found the odd (sometimes very odd) guitar players room that affords some entertainment. There are others that I have tried that are toe-curlingly gruesome, karaoke or worse. I'll try the one that Jon and Alison mention above next time I'm passing, but any guidance would be welcome.

Frank from Toledo's room is great when open, but what others are there?

Alan

Of late I seem to be the only person prepared to open the snug. Last night it opened early at about 19:40 BST and I closed it about 23:00 BST when I was the only person left in the room and no other 'catters on my pal list were on PalTalk. Sorry if this doesn't seem a fair way of working it, but I'm not leaving my PC on and my phone bill mounting just so somebody can come along later and find a room open.

I'll open the snug anytime I see 3 or more folk I recognise on Paltalk and have the time to go admin, not just Thursday nights.

Oh and blues is equally welcome in the room.

Scott

The whole point of the Thursday Snug bar was that it would be opened early - i.e., 9.00pm GMT, so that those of us Brits/Europeans who had jobs to go to the next day, didn't feel obliged to stay up till all hours of the morning just to hear music. Anyone is welcome to take over the admin and keep the room open after we've all turned into pumpkins an hour early.

The major point is, that at the moment, it is apparently the ONLY regular Mudcat event happening on Paltalk, where not so long ago, there would be three or four a week.

If I had nothing else to do, I'd be happy to sit here till 3.00am our time and listen to people sing every night, but it just can't be done if I want to maintain any home life or do my work properly.

Rory, the password is nearly always published in the threads when the room is opened, but a new query thread will always get you a reply.

Norton, I'm sorry I missed you, but I have a long way to drive today, after a 5.30am shopping start already, so needed to get to bed.

Please don't think we are trying to keep the snug as a private thing, maybe we should experiment with having it as an open room next week.....

Noreen, quetions were asked, comments were made (e.g. too late...) about people looking in later and finding nothing, I gave an honest view. That is the point... Which has now been made...

If "the other side" had been willing to chat and go with a concensus, NONE of the unpleasantness would ever have happened, if the 2 could have just existed side by side, NONE of this would have ever happened...

I keep quiet most of the time but don't expect me to NEVER read questions/comments on what is and not pass my own comments.

Jon

Nothing silly about that, Rory. Hope to see you in the snug sometime.

Jon, what's the point in bringing all that up again? Particularly for the benefit of new members who missed the unpleasantness? It's all over and best forgotten.

Noreen

Thank you John I am aware of the other rooms in paltalk, I just thought it would be nice to have a room that was locked as an alternative to the sometimes HUGE and overwhelming regular paltalk rooms. A room full of mudcats to get a chance to meet them and hear them without the hubbub of the regular rooms. Ah well.... silly me! Hugsssss from Rory

There is always something Rory. Some like the Snug, cosy all Mudcatters, other open and all can be enjoyable. Best plan with Paltalk is to trawl all the live rooms. They all can be fun and the talent can be amazing (both Mudcatters and others - plenty of skill on both sides and it doens't matter anyway when people are having fun...) in "Live Music For Serious Musicans" now - and don't believe serious means you have to be of professional std to enjoy it. I'm not and I'll play in there...

Oh gosh! I must have misunderstood.....I thought the snug room was like other paltalk rooms where you went to play and sing live and meet other mudcats? I thought it was blues and folk not just folk? I thought it was everyone not just people from the UK? Help I am new.......eeeeeeeek -a confused Rory-

Life can be funny when you look back on it. Pre the snug/song circle row, there was one room open to all Mudcatters (and others) for folk songs that was pretty well open to suit most times and with a number of admins...

There was nothing wrong with the opening of the Snug and I respect and I agree with Dave's (nynia) motives for setting up such a room. Where the shame came in was that there seemed to have to be a one or other situation and the open room was at one time closed so there was no supposed competetion (in fact was supposed to alternate per night) and little or no discussion from that point on, even though the open room was alwas open and started based on a concensus in favour of that option. The rows really were because the Snug had to be the only room and anyone who tried to go back to a concensus was being argumentative, not keeping the peace, "bringing that old shit up", etc.

The way it seems to have worked from then on is that most of the ones who like the open stuff have largely moved over to non-mudcat rooms (although some combine both and some Mudcatters run open rooms and working the other way, contary to the arguments at the time have made new friends - even if few are primarily folk players) and the Snug seems to make the couple of hours once a week but the rest of the time many who were argueing for a Mudcat (closed room) do not suppport it or keep it open for long and I suspect some of the suporters never attend.

Look back and think on what you killed for the sake of for what for a long time has at best a 2 hr once a week offering for UK people and congratulate yourselves.

Jon

Home at last - no bar open - dang UKers - wiped it out - Lanfranc was the last of this group. He did his best but the sorrow got to even him.

It is lonesome and dreary -

Too late, my brother, too late, but never mind!

Everyone had gone at 11pm - what sort of musicians are these?

Opened the room again in the vain hope that someone might show up, and am drinking a lonely malt whisky as I wait, disconsolate, in the empty bar.

There's nothing so lonesome, morbid or drear ....

Still be fun - Last English that I met were some of your troops in Hong Kong in 1966. Had a roaring good time at one of the bars.

Besides - I've never had the opportunity to sing to an "English" crowd.
