No, I don't like the way that piece sounds on my accordion. Although I have the music for several of his pieces, the only one I like the sound of on my box is Ashokan Farewell, and that one only occasionally. Maybe if I had a sweeter sounding box.

Carol, do you play his "Wizard's Walk" ? Very clever tune, but one which I found very hard to commit to memory. I still have to sneak a glance at the music sometimes when we play it.

Sorry, this is thread drift, I know.

Murray

I don't particularly like "The Lover's Waltz" either, Murray. But I love most of Jay's other stuff.

Harbara, I guess I am the only person on earth who can't abide "The Lover's Waltz". We play it at the insistence of my fiddler, who thinks it is wonderful.

To think the same man also wrote the immortal "Ashokan Farewell". ( Which could also be played as a waltz, come to think of it)

Check out the five CD's by Timothy Seaman from the Williamsburg living historical society...all instruments are exceptional arrangments but the hammered dulimer is particularly excellent.

In my previous post, it should have read 'White Rose Waltz' (or 'Sundowner's Waltz'). My apologies.

There are several lovely waltzes, including the exquisite 'Wild Rose Waltz' ( or 'Sundowner's Waltz'), among the 32 tunes on JP Fraley's 'Wild Rose of the Mountain' Rounder CD 0037. A review of this beaut reissue CD may be found here:

Beautiful renditions of 'Over the Waves' and 'Wednesday Night Waltz' may be found on a CD reissue of superb fiddler, Clark Kessinger: 'The Legend of Clark Kessinger' County CO-CD-2713.

According to what I just found, Ookpik was written by Frankie Rogers; BlueMont by Rodney Miller.

About 12 years ago (before CDs and MP3), a friend gave me a tape called "Last Band on the B Side", which is a collection of instrumental waltzes. I have no idea whether this was an actual published compilation or a home-grown one. But the waltzes are, for the most part, lovely. Here are the titles and artists (the ones I can read, anyway!). I know some of these folks now have 21st-century access to their music.

Keegan's Waltz and Jig -- Cathie Whitesides
Cabri Waltz/Midnight on the Water -- Bill Spence
Katrina Valsen/Brondums Hopsi -- Spelimenninir (?)
Nerissa's/Larry's Waltz -- New England Chestnuts
Waterfall Waltz -- Marshall Barron and Phil Merrill
Margaret's Waltz (one of my favorites!) -- Trapezoid
Joyous Waltz -- Jean Carignan
My Home Waltz -- Strathspey
Westphalia Waltz -- Arm & Hammer Stringband
Kiss Me Waltz -- Bill Monroe

There are also two beautiful waltzes, "Gaelic Farmer" and "Rowan Davies", on Harbors of Home, the latest CD by Gordon Bok, Ed Trickett, and Ann Mayo Muir, which is available through Timberhead Music.

Waltzes are wonderful!

Aloha,
Mark

I believe Sam Rizzetta has some good ones on hammered dulcimer.

And I know these guys do, although their renditions are slightly tweaked and not strictly in the traditional style... Morning Star Consort.

If you scroll down to the bottom of the page, you can click on some sound samples from their first CD.

go Irish and do a medley with Wild Colonial Boy, Black Velvet Band then The Wild Rover and at Christmas stick in Fairytale of New York. When you get to the end start again and see if anyone notices, get the tempo first and play the tunes accordingly so the dancers dont get too knackered, good luck.Happy Christmas.

I wonder if any of you folks can help me out...

I'm looking for some CD's of American traditional Appalachian/Old-Timey/Bluegrass waltzes. You know, tunes with the really pretty, evocative melodies.

Any CD/artist recommendations will be much appreciated. Thanks...
