Beth Nielsen Chapman's CD "Sand and Water" (Reprise, 1997, produced by Rodney Crowell) was the singer/songwriter's cathartic way of dealing with the devastating loss of her husband, Ernest, to cancer. It's a tough listen but rewarding and ultimately hopeful. Recommended!

Michael

I just went to google.com and plugged in "stone and water, baby," and lo! the first site that came up was the right artist. Have you ever tried www.google.com, or any of the other search engines?

Sand and water

All alone I didn't like the feeling
All alone I sat and cried
All alone I had to find some meaning
In the center of the pain I felt inside

All alone I came into this world
All alone I will someday die
Solid stone is just sand and water, baby
Sand and water, and a million years gone by

I will see you in the light of a thousand suns
I will hear you in the sound of the waves
I will know you when I come, as we all will come
Through the doors beyond the grave

All alone I heal this heart of sorrow
All alone I raise this child
Flesh and bone, he's just
Bursting towards tomorrow
And his laughter fills my world and wears your smile

All alone I came into this world
All alone I will someday die
Solid stone is just sand and water, baby
Sand and water and a million years gone by

Beth wrote this replacement third verse for Elton John...
All alone I heal this heart of sorrow
I can only live this day
Flesh and bone my life's bursting toward tomorrow
And the love you send my heart still finds it's way

About
"This is a very important song for me, the first song I wrote after my husband's death. I was really not sure how I was going to proceed with my life. I couldn't see my life beyond just what I was going to have for breakfast the next morning. I wrote it very quickly and I wasn't even sure what I had written. It came from such a very deep place. I played it for Rodney Crowell and he said, "This song is going to help so many people," and I looked at him like "I don't know what you are talking about." I wasn't even sure I was going to take it out of my house. I mean, I thought it was too sad, or too personal. But I have to say it's the most powerful song I ever took out of my house! By virtue of its being so intimate and true...it has been the most universal." Beth Nielsen Chapman

Anyone know where to locate lyrics/recordings of a hauntingly beautiful song I heard on an old E.R. show that had these lyrics (or close!): "...all alone, we are born; all alone, we will someday die. It's just stone and water, baby..." If you know, would you eMail me at cjanem@earthlink.net? I would be so grateful! Thanks.
