Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Sweet Cider From: Jeri Date: 10 Feb 03 - 09:20 AM Masato listed "Stop! Can't you stop making love the whole night long! ("Come On And La-La With Me", 1914)" It's seems the term "making love" could have meant the same thing as "making whoopee." It makes me wonder about all those "la-la" choruses though. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Sweet Cider From: masato sakurai Date: 09 Feb 03 - 02:29 PM Titles and lines with "make love" from the Levy collection: "Making Love in the Choir" (1884) "Different Ways of Making Love" (1902) It is nice to make love in most any old clime to a maid by the moonlit sea ("Dream City. The Magic Knight. Love By Telephone", 1906) There is a certain knack, most people seem to lack in making love ("Things We Are Not Supposed To Know", 1907) "Can I Make Love To You" (1908) "Don't Drop a Quarter in the Meter (I'd Rather Make Love in the Dark)" (1912) Stop! Can't you stop making love the whole night long! ("Come On And La-La With Me", 1914) I've been making love to you, but your are so cold to me ("Give Me the Right to Love You", 1917) "It Takes An Irishman To Make Love" (1917) "Take Your Girlie To the Movies (If You Can't Make Love At Home)" (1919) Some folks need atmosphere when they're making love ("It's The Girl! Fox Trot Song", 1931) You make time and you make love dandy ("Are You Makin' Any Money?" 1933) Now I'd never dream of making love with so many people near ("Dancing on a Dime", 1940) Did you ever make love? If not, have a try ("Pull Down the Blind", n.d.) ~Masato |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Sweet Cider From: Jeri Date: 09 Feb 03 - 01:31 PM Joe, I have a Webster's dictionary published in 1966 which gives the meaning as "to woo or embrace, kiss, etc. as lovers do." It may have changed over the years so the "etc." is the predominant activity meant. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Sweet Cider From: Jeri Date: 09 Feb 03 - 01:23 PM When I was young, not as long ago as some may think, my parents and other relatives used the term around me. The meaning was kissing, hugging, cuddling - just showing affection in general. It could have mean two adults showing affection to each other, perhaps leading to sex, or a parent and a child smooching in a normal non-sexual parent/child manner. I doubt it would be in a popular song from 1916 if it meant something other than "spoonin'." |
Subject: Made Sweet Love? From: Joe Offer Date: 09 Feb 03 - 12:35 PM Excuse me for thread drift, but when they "made sweet love" back in 1916, what were they referring to? I see many references to "making love" in old songs, and I'm not sure I can believe Grandma and Grandpa were singing about rolling in the hay. Well, at least not in published songs... But really, what did the term mean back then? -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Sweet Cider From: Sorcha Date: 08 Feb 03 - 11:06 AM I managed to find out that the music is by Percy Wenrich, lyrics by Joseph McCarthy, title is Sweet Cider Time When You Were Mine. It's an American song written 1916 but I didn't find any lyrics. Checked Levy, Duke, American Music Collections and Google. |
