Subject: RE: Fret wire needed for Yamaha From: DADGBE Date: 11 Jul 03 - 12:54 PM Hi Eric, The width of the tang is the problem. Whatever the original width of the tang (ignoring the barbs), a slightly wider tang is used on each successive refreting job. The operative word here is 'slightly'. One or two thousandths of an inch is the tolerance level. Too narrow a tang and the neck will develop a dished profile under string tension. Too wide a tang and the neck will have a back bend. Often, a good luthier can correct a dished neck by judiciously varying tang sizes during a refret. Any competent luthier should have little problem with finding the correct size. Good luck, Ray |
Subject: RE: Fret wire needed for Yamaha From: Eric the Viking Date: 11 Jul 03 - 12:06 PM Thankee, from what I gather it's not the height that the problen, it's the profile of the tang? and grips. The bit that sticks into the wood. Too small and they ddrop out, too big and the next time they need replacing you need the same size or bigger. |
Subject: RE: Fret wire needed for Yamaha From: Kudzuman Date: 10 Jul 03 - 07:59 PM Stewmac is indeed a good source. It shouldn't really be a problem if you have a good luthier. If he has a standard fretwire which is a thousandth or so higher he should be able to flatten the wire and recrown and there ya go. Kudzuman |
Subject: RE: Fret wire needed for Yamaha From: JohnInKansas Date: 10 Jul 03 - 06:54 PM Well, screwed up the last link. Must have pasted the address over my "pretypes." The other "name" in the business is StewMac. I haven't dealt with them, but they've been recommended in a number of other threads. John |
Subject: RE: Fret wire needed for Yamaha From: JohnInKansas Date: 10 Jul 03 - 06:51 PM Most luthiery suppliers should have a good selection of different fretwire styles - but you'll probably have to decide which one is the best match for what you want. I didn't find anything labelled "Yamaha fretwire" in a quick look. You can try the front door at Luthiers Mercantile International, or go direct to Fretwire for what's available at LMI. I've done some business with LSI, and they've been helpful. The other "name" in the business is http://www.stewmac.com/cgi-bin/hazel.cgi?action=SERVE&ITEM=catalog/s.html&1=%2Bsection%3DFretting_supplies&5=%2Bsort%3D1>StewMac. Subject: Fret wire needed for Yamaha From: Eric the Viking Date: 10 Jul 03 - 05:42 PM Hi all. The continuing saga of my Yam needing a refret-found some one (there are several) who would re-fret the guitar. (Harpmaker, you never got back to me)However, I keep getting told that Yam fret wire is a different guage to others. I checked with Yamaha themselves. Yes it is, but they no longer sell it as spares! Anyone know where I can get the correct wire for a Yamaha DWS4SC? Please. |
