A song/tune that I've had a lot of fun with is Star of the County Down. Play it first as a march ~ Sing it as a ballad ~ Finish by playing it as a jig.

My band used to finish of Lanigans Ball by kicking into Sportsmans Hornpipe which is a North West English tune.It was great to see an Irish pub audience dancing on the tables on St Patricks night to an English tune. Multiculturalism rules!

Thanks everyone. I've been meaning to add Scarta Glen to our repertoire. ANy other favorites? We used to do "Invitation to a Funeral" followed by "Temperance Reel" (where the song gets its tune), but we had to stop doing that because people laughed and clapped so much at the punch line of the song that they never heard the reel.

Our band has several tune/song combinations.

Scartaglen paired w/ two jigs- Ten Penny Bit and Scarce O'Tatties
A song in Gaelic- Ag Casadh cam na Feadarnai (sp?) w/ the Lilting Banshee
Hey Donal with Humours of Tulla and The Mountain Road
& a new song (Gaelic- can't spell it yet - Tha Minchin Rare is the phonetic spelling) with Walsh's Hornpipe and the Boys of Malin.

A favorite of mine is Aylesbury Girl (aka Ups and Downs) with Haste to the Wedding used as an instrumental break to stand in for the missing consumation verse. Gotta do Haste as a jig, though, not an aire.

One band that is terrific at creating such arrangements is Nightingale, out of Brattleboro, Vermont. Very tasty pairings of songs and tunes.

This is a hallmark of the band I play in. For example, we do John Riley using Lochleven Castle A part for the turnaround, and then finish it out AA BB. Wonderful arrangement. On our first CD we took a variation of The Swallowtail and used it as the instrumental portion of Follow Me Up To Carlow. We have a number of others like this.

Well, with a new year coming up I'm looking for new songs. I sing with a "celtic music" band and we have the most fun when we sing song/tune combinations - like Cap'n Bing (a saucy hornpipe) in the middle of Let Him Go Let Him Tarry.

Anyone else have some favorite song/tune combibations in the Celtic tradition?
